Though the course is entitled "Stratospheric Chemistry and Dynamics" the course won't deal with much chemistry since the chemical part was taken over two years ago by Ralph Lehmann. My part deals mainly with atmospheric aerosols (troposphere and stratosphere), dynamics and the modeling of clouds and trace gas distributions in the stratosphere (see detailed outline below). The course will be on a level that also non-atmospheric PhD students should be able to follow. The seminar will include results of a review of the state of the science for a number of threats to the global oceans (e.g., acidification, sea level rise, pollution, overuse of resources, anoxia, warming) as well as a holistic view of all of these threats taken together, the potential feedbacks between the threats and how these may influence management and governance strategies. Results of economic valuations comparing the costs of action and inaction on threats to the oceans will be presented. The comparative economic analysis will use two scenarios for future development, focusing on comparing the economic impacts for the threats (and potential interactions among them) along two different scenarios. Message-ID: <5050E743.4050000@geo.su.se> Dear all, Our IGV Marine Geology Br?gger speaker for the autumn semester is Dr. Karen Kohfeld of Simon Frasier University (http://www.rem.sfu.ca/people/faculty/kohfeld/). She will give a seminar on the very hot topic of the position of the glacial westerlies winds: *"Glacial-interglacial changes in the Southern Ocean westerlies: a comparison of observations and model results." * Date: Thursday 27 September, 16:00 Venue: Room Y22, Geohuset (the lecture halls are used for a conference). After the seminar, ~17:00, we will all meet in U1 at the geopub for some beer-lubricated scientific and philosophical discussions. All welcome, even if you didn't make it to the talk. The talk abstract is below. Let me know if you have any questions Best, Agatha Abstract: The Southern Hemisphere westerlies are central to our understanding of ocean circulation, productivity, and carbon cycling during glacial-interglacial cycles. However, models and observations currently do not produce a coherent picture of changes in the westerly winds during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). While observations are generally interpreted to suggest that westerly winds were shifted towards the equator and were weaker during the LGM, modeling studies have suggested many possible, conflicting changes in winds. In this talk I will present a synthesis of paleo-observational data that have been used to infer changes in LGM winds. This comparison suggests that an overall strengthening, an equatorward displacement, or no change at all in winds could all be interpreted as consistent with observations. These observations are then compared with a series of atmospheric general circulation model experiments and previously conducted atmosphere-ocean general circulation model simulations from the PMIP2 project. The majority of these simulations show only small latitudinal shifts between the preindustrial and the LGM periods, but even small shifts can adequately explain observed changes in terrestrial moisture, without an equatorward shift in the position of the westerly winds. Together the observations and models suggest that glacial-interglacial latitudinal changes in westerly winds may have been substantially smaller than previously suggested. -- Agatha M. de Boer, Associate Professor Dept. of Geological Science and Bert Bolin Centre for Climate Research Stockholm University, 106 91 Stockholm, Tel: +46 8 16 4730 http://people.su.se/~adebo -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We have come with some really interesting finds, and at the same time, the first results came from the lab for our 10Be samples from the last year. We still have a lot of work to do but an exciting story is emerging from our data. In the seminar, I will report on the progress of our work in the deciphering of the flooding history of this little known glacial lake. /Martin -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Evaluating the representation of the water cycle in climate models remain a challenge. Because of fractionation during phase changes, the water vapor isotopic composition reflects the history of phase changes during the water cycle. The development and availability of a growing number of remote sensing retrievals of isotopic composition (e.g. SCIAMACHY, GOSAT, TES, ACE-FTS, MIPAS, IASI, ground-based FTIR) provides an opportunity to explore the added value of tropospheric water vapor isotopic measurements for process oriented evaluation of convective, cloud and transport processes in climate models. The first step in this direction is to learn to make the link between model-data isotopic differences and model biases in their representation of physical processes. To understand how different representations of physical processes are imprinted in the simulated isotopic composition, we use the isotope-enabled atmospheric general circulation model (GCM) LMDZ and we perform sensitivity tests to the physical representation of convective, cloud and transport processes. Once we gain this understanding, we can use isotopic data to evaluate the representation of physical processes in GCMs and to identify and interpret model biases. In this seminar I'll give an example of this approach for the evaluation of subtropical tropospheric humidity. Comparison between LMDZ sensitivity tests, 7 isotope-enabled GCMs and various isotopic datasets suggests that most GCMs suffer from excessive vertical diffusion, and that this problem explains the upper-tropospheric moist bias that has long been noticed in GCMs. Then, I'll present work in progress on how isotopic observations could be used to better evaluate and constrain the representation of convective and cloud processes. ----------------------------------------------- Qiong Zhang Bert Bolin Centre for Climate Research Department of Meteorology Stockholm University Email: qiong at misu.su.se Tel: +46-8 16 3696 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I am a tidy and quiet person with a stable income and pay the rent always in time. I do not smoke and have no pets either. I am looking for a 2 or 3-room apartment in Stockholm to rent for 1 year or longer, starting as soon as possible. The apartment should be near the center or have good public transport connections to Karolinska. Any hints/help are much appreciated! The occurrence of moulins and the drainage of supraglacial lakes on the Greenland Ice Sheet have been documented to force ice velocity acceleration, a mechanism which remains largely unaccounted for within ice sheet models. This seminar describes a model for the spatial and temporal prediction of moulin formation and lake drainages for test sites on southwest Greenland and the Devon Ice Cap in High Arctic Canada. Through the results of this modelling the importance of better incorporation of supraglacial and englacial hydrology within ice sheet modelling will be discussed for both historical and contemporary ice sheets.
