Chase ? project PI); Laboratoire d?Oceanographie et du Climat (LOCEAN), Universit? Pierre et Marie Curie, France (Myriam Khodri) Geography Department, University of Utah (Simon Brewer) As a part of the European Research Council grant HYRAX, we are inviting applications for a 24 month post-doctoral position focussed the comparison of palaeoenvironmental proxy data and general circulation model (GCM) simulations of past climates in southern Africa. The palaeoenvironmental data used will include all existing datasets from the region, as well as a rich selection of data obtained from rock hyrax middens (cf. Chase et al., 2012) that have been recovered from across the subcontinent (e.g. Chase et al., 2009; Chase et al., 2011). For comparison, PMIP3-CMIP5 model simulations for 21 ka, 6 ka and the last millennium will be considered. Each period poses distinct questions, and each will be examined as separate sub-projects. Depending on the results and progress of the project, the successful candidate will be expected to carry out sensitivity tests with the IPSL-CM5 earth climate model to explore the dominant controls on regional climate change for key periods, and to improve the realism of the simulations. The position would be ideal for a climate modeller who wishes to expand their knowledge and understanding of environmental processes or a quantitative palaeoecologist/palaeoenvironmental scientist who wishes to gain experience in working directly with climate models. Coding experience (FORTRAN, C++, Python) will be an advantage. This researcher will become part of an interdisciplinary team exploring past climate and vegetation change in southern Africa, with the opportunity to contribute to a wide range of sub-projects pertaining to local and regional palaeoenvironments and palaeoecology. More information about the project can be found at http://www.hyrax.univ-montp2.fr. The start date is flexible, but will need to be before early September, 2013. Applicants should submit: 1) a cover letter that highlights their skills, experience, and the fit between this opportunity and their research directions, 2) a curriculum vitae, 3) up to three sample publications, and 4) the names, email addresses, and phone numbers three references. Please email all materials and/or questions to Brian Chase (Brian.Chase at univ-montp2.fr) with the subject line: ?HYRAX PD2?. Review of applications is ongoing. Salary is estimated at ?29,000 ? ?35,000 per annum. Chase, B.M., Meadows, M.E., Scott, L., Thomas, D.S.G., Marais, E., Sealy, J., Reimer, P.J., 2009. Abstract The Lake of Stymphalia is known as the place where Heracles was fighting against the Stymphalian Birds as one of his 12 labors. Today, mythical stories like this are investigated for information on environmental change caused by early settlers in prehistoric Greece. Our interdisciplinary project aims to understand the relationship between the historical and the climatic record, as well as the natural versus human-induced environmental change on the Northern Peloponnesus. Several piston cores were recovered at Stymphalia with a length of up to 15 meters, corresponding to a maximum age of 45 ka. I will present the first results of multi-proxy analyses based on sedimentological, and geochemical methods as well as on Bayesian age-depth-modeling. Warmly Welcome! Weathering the Snowball: Insights and Implications from Re-Os geochronology Alan D. Rooney Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Harvard University Nordenski?ldsalen, Geovetenskapens hus, 14:00, April 22 - 2013 The Neoproterozoic Era (1000?542 Ma) witnessed a series of unique geological and biogeochemical events that critically shaped the evolution of life. After nearly a billion years with no evidence for glaciation, between 717 and 635 Ma ice advanced to equatorial latitudes at least twice. Although the initiation mechanism of these Neoproterozoic ?Snowball Earth? events has remained a mystery, the rough synchroneity of rifting of the supercontinent Rodinia, the emplacement of large igneous provinces, and the onset of the Sturtian glaciation has suggested a tectonic forcing. The lack of age constraints from a single glaciogenic succession has hampered attempts to constrain the duration of these glaciations and correlate global Neoproterozoic strata. New precise rhenium-osmium (Re-Os) geochronology data from Sturtian-age glacial deposits in northwestern Canada confirms that the Sturtian glaciation(s) were long lasting and deglaciation was globally synchronous. Highresolution Os and Sr isotope profiles that bracket glaciogenic strata provide novel insights into weathering regimes in a pre- and post-Snowball environment. These data highlight the potential for Re-Os geochronology to help refine the temporal framework of Neoproterozoic geochemical, tectonic and evolutionary upheavals. . Alasdair, can you compose and send an e-mail to the Bolincenter list about the lecture and panel discussion. We also need to book some location for the panel discussion (preliminary 13-15) - can you do that? Cheers for Exeter, UK, Gunilla -------- Original Message -------- Subject: SV: Paneldiskussion p? Thursday next week there will be an oceanography seminar by Prof Markus Jochum on the glacial-interglacial variations of CO2. "From turbulence to ice-sheets - a journey across time and space" Speaker: Prof Markus Jochum, Niels Bohr Institute, Kopenhagen Time: Thursday 2 May, 14.15 Place: Seminar room at MISU: C609 Abstract: The latest version of the Community Earth System Model is now able to reproduce realistically a glacial inception. This provides strong support for the Milankovitch hypothesis, and allows us to analyze in detail the positive and negative feedback processes leading to the growth of the ice sheets during the ice ages. It also allows us to address the question of the glacial-interglacial variations of CO2. In this talk I will discuss the different feedback processes during glacial inception, and the processes that lead to the observed drawdown of CO2. http://www.misu.su.se/about-us/events/seminars/seminar-markus-jochum-university-of-copenhagen-denmark-1.128486 Jonas ================================================ Prof. Jonas Nycander Dept. of Meteorology Stockholm University S-106 91 Stockholm Sweden tel.: +46-8-164336 fax: +46-8-157185 email: jonas at misu.su.se ================================================ From axel.horst at itm.su.se Fri Apr 26 14:45:07 2013 From: axel.horst at itm.su.se (Axel Horst) Date: Fri, 26 Apr 2013 14:45:07 +0200 Subject: [Bolincentret-at-su.se] BGC+ATM seminar Thursday, 2 May, 13:00 Message-ID: <1366980307130271500@itm.su.se> Lectures in Biogeochemistry and Atmospheric Science Thursday 2 May at 13:00 Ahlmansalen, Geohuset Submarine canyons as efficient transport conveyors in shelf-slope exchange by Anna W?hlin Dept of Earth Sciences, G?teborgs universitet The Bolin Centre for Climate Research, the Department of Applied Environmental Science and the Department of Geological Sciences Organizers : Patrick Crill, (patrick.crill at geo.su.se), ?rjan Gustafsson, (orjan.gustafsson at itm.su.se), Axel Horst, (axel.horst at itm.su.se), -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... However, the Bolin Centre provides a useful platform to do so and it might be very fruitful to get in touch across disciplines which are related to biogeochemical cycles in the climate system. Therefore, we thought that it would be a good idea to explore potentials for further collaborations inside RA4, or just discuss interesting latest concepts. A first very important step was to collect research interests on paper, see the document put together by Volker for the last meeting. (Please, have a look at this living document and enhance or modify where needed, and send it back to us.) However, dry paper alone cannot stimulate communication. Therefore, we thought about a series of Fika during May where everybody can attend and meet colleagues. The idea would be that everybody informs his/herself alone about the research interests of RA4 colleagues and then get in touch during the Fika. Everybody is busy of course. However, with having three Fika in a row we hope that you will have a good chance to meet with all colleagues. So, please, come and join our first RA4 Fika at May, 3rd 2:30 PM in the S5 floor area in front of Br?ggerrummet. Next possibilities will be at May, 14th and 20th, same place and same time. Please, mark your calendar already. Then, our idea is to meet more formally again at May, 23rd to discuss new or old discoveries of collaboration ideas. We will send around more info then. Welcome!
