Who: *Dr. Alan Condron*, Climate System Research Center, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, USA, www.geo.umass.edu/faculty/condron Title: "*Meltwater, Icebergs, and Past Abrupt Climate Change*" When: Friday October 18, 13:15-14:15 Where: DeGeersalen Abstract: Many periods of Abrupt Climate change during the last deglaciation began with a catastrophic meltwater flood to the North Atlantic (e.g. Younger Dryas, 8.2-kyr-event). Yet, no obvious connection between the volume of freshwater released to the ocean and the severity of the cooling seems to exist. Here I present results from a series of very high-resolution ocean model simulations to show that considerable volumes of freshwater would have been transported to the subtropical (not the subpolar) North Atlantic during periods of meltwater and iceberg discharge. Our model pathway is supported by the discovery that 300 m thick icebergs once drifted to southern Florida. In the second part of this talk I use the same high resolution model to determine the location of the meltwater flood that triggered the Younger Dryas cold episode ~13,000 years ago. I conclude that the impact of freshwater forcing on climate is greatly influenced by the drainage route to the ocean and the subsequent transport of meltwater in the ocean by narrow coastal boundary currents. If anyone would like to meet with Alan during his visit to Stockholm (October 17-18) please let me know and we can arrange something. I have seen the use of the scientific poster template, and it is nice looking, works ok and seems relatively easy to use. This paper has stimulated the community of organic aerosol studies and contributed significantly to the progress of understanding of the formation of oxalic acid and related compounds in the troposphere. About the Prize On 21 October 2013 the Executive Editors Hanwant B. Singh, Peter Brimblecombe, Chak Chan and Alfred Wiedensohler of Atmospheric Environment and the Publisher of Atmospheric Environment take great pleasure in announcing the 2013 ?Haagen-Smit Prize?, designed to recognize outstanding papers published in Atmospheric Environment. The Prize is named in honour of Prof. Arie Jan Haagen-Smit, a pioneer in the field of air pollution and one of the first editors of the International Journal of Air Pollution, a predecessor to Atmospheric Environment. The ?Haagen-Smit Prize? is given annually to a maximum of two papers published in Atmospheric Environment and covering different science areas. In 2013, the Prize is for a single paper: K. Kawamura, H. Kasukabe and L. A. Barrie, Source and reaction pathways of dicarboxylic acids, ketoacids and dicarbonyls in arctic aerosols: One year of observations, Atmospheric Environment, volume 30, 1709-1722 (1996) With a record of over 220 citations, it is one of the most frequently cited papers in the study of water-soluble organic aerosols on molecular levels. About the article The authors discovered an enhanced production of small dicarboxylic acids (e.g., oxalic, malonic, and succinic acids) in the ambient aerosols from the Canadian High Arctic Alert observatory during ?Arctic Sunrise? in March to April. The concentrations of dicarboxylic acids became 5 to 20 times more abundant than in the preceding dark winter months depending on the species, demonstrating that they are produced in situ by secondary photochemical oxidation of organic pollutants carried by long-range atmospheric transport to the Arctic from middle and low altitudes during winter to spring. Based on the detailed analyses of molecular compositions of dicarboxylic acids and related compounds, the authors proposed chain-reactions of oxygenated organic molecules for the production of oxalic acid that is an end product and thus accumulates in the ambient aerosols. Oxalic acid and related compounds are now recognized as one of the most abundant organic compound classes in the tropospheric aerosols from different locations of the globe. Because of their hygroscopic properties, these water-soluble organics have been recognized to act as cloud condensation nuclei and have an influence on the Earth climate. As you all know Stockholm University is the larger part in the collaboration and according to common rules the layout and colors thus follow SU:s profile. However, we are very keen on displaying the other partners as much as possible and this has been accomplished in the new power point template below. Power point template Attached is the brand new power point template for the Bolin Centre. Please use it for all possible occasions! We humbly ask that also KTH and SMHI scientists agree to use it as this would greatly strengthen the reputation of the centre. Some guidance for a successful presentation I have produces a short power point presentation and a document about the benefits of talking to non-experts and practical advice on presentation techniques. Please have a look and you are most welcome to give me feed back on the material.
