The partitioning of semi-volatile oxidation products between the gas phase and condensed phases in the atmosphere is a key process during SOA formation. Presently, the SOA community (i) relies almost exclusively on saturation vapour pressure based approaches to estimate gas/particle partitioning equilibria and (ii) sometimes lacks an integrated perspective, because it is split into groups studying the partitioning of compounds into organic particles and into the aqueous phase. Organic contaminant scientists have experience in describing distribution phenomena of semi-volatile organic chemicals between multiple phases using equilibrium partition coefficients. In particular, they have developed methods both for predicting phase partitioning from molecular structure and for graphically illustrating multiphase partitioning. In this talk, I will show that these techniques can be applied to, and advance the quantitative treatment and understanding of, the issue of SOA formation. Specifically, I will argue that phase partitioning coefficients of the multi-functional organic compounds in the volatility range relevant to SOA formation can be predicted more precisely than their vapour pressure. Furthermore, the placement of SOA compounds in the chemical partitioning space provides an integrated perspective that allows for the simultaneous visualization and quantitative comparison of the impact on their multiphase distribution of changes in atmospheric parameters (such as temperature, salinity, organic matter phase polarity, organic aerosol load, and liquid water content), and chemical properties (such as oxidation state, molecular size, functionalization, and dimerisation). Everybody is welcome! Elena Gorokhova, Prof. Applied Environmental Science, Stockholm University -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I am writing this letter because I would like to help with the Bolin Centre booth for the upcoming AGU Fall Meeting. My study have been accepted for a poster presentation for the conference. Details of my poster presentation is as follows: *Paper Title*: High-resolution Mapping of Offshore and Onshore Glaciogenic Features in Melville Bay, Northwestern Greenland *Presentation Type:* Poster *Session Date and Time:* Wednesday, 17 December 2014; 8:00 AM - 12:20 PM *Session Number and Title:* OS31A: New Perspectives on Seafloor Morphology from High-Resolution Ocean Mapping I have gotten AGU support only for my plane tickets and thus would need funds to cover some of the expenses. I am hoping that I would get support for my registration to lessen my cost. Thank you very much and hoping to hear a positive response! Date: Wed, Dec 10, 2014 at 12:50 AM Subject: AGU Global Environmental Change Focus Group Announcements: December 2014 To: leonardbarrie at gmail.com Click here to access the web version of this message . *Global Environmental Change (GEC) Focus Group* *Announcements: December 2014* *GEC Focus Group Reception at Fall Meeting* You are invited to attend the AGU Global Environmental Change (GEC) Focus Group Reception at the 2014 Fall Meeting. The reception will take place on Tuesday, 16 December, 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. in the Telegraph Hill Room, 4th floor, Intercontinental Hotel San Francisco. The hotel is at 5th and Howard St, only one block west of Moscone West. This is your chance to meet GEC Focus Group officers and volunteers, discuss your involvement in the Focus Group, and mingle with colleagues. (Beer or wine and light appetizers will be served for the first hour). See you there! Malcolm Hughes AGU Focus Group President, Global Environmental Change *Outstanding Student Paper Awards* Please help GEC student presenters hone their skills by volunteering to judge presentations for the Outstanding Student Paper Award (OSPA) program at this year's meeting. It's easy to sign up for as many as you'd like to review on the *OSPA system *. Use your AGU member login for access and select "OSPA Login". The system is very user-friendly and allows you to easily find presentations that still need judges and match your available times. Session chairs can easily judge presentations in their sessions. Direct interactions and feedback from more experienced scientists are very meaningful to students. You can help prime them for successful careers in geoscience. Many thanks to those who have already volunteered, and thanks in advance for all of you who are about to sign up! Best regards, Sarah A. Green and Afshin Pourmokhtarian AGU Focus Group OSPA Coordinators, Global Environmental Change *Other Fall Meeting Opportunities* The NOAA/OAR/CPO Modeling, Analysis, Predictions, and Projections program and the NOAA CMIP5 Task Force invite you to attend an AGU Fall Meeting side event taking place *6:00-9:00 P.M. Thursday, 18 December in the Marriott Marquis room Golden Gate A*. The event will present NOAA CMIP5 Task Force activities over the past three years, which were centered on analyzing results based on CMIP5 historical and projection datasets with a focus on North America. Attendees will have a chance to interact members of the Task Force. Beyond the Task Force membership's large body of scientific work, members organized and contributed to a special collection of papers in the Journal of Climate on CMIP5 model simulations for North America, produced a report comparing CMIP3 and CMIP5 model performance (being released right before the AGU), developed guidelines for developing process-oriented metrics from multimodel datasets, contributed extensively to the IPCC AR5 and sustained National Climate Assessment process, and organized a number of sessions at major annual meetings. This event will recognize and discuss these achievements with a focus on the scientific results; an agenda for the event is included below. *Light refreshments will be served*. - 6:00-7:00 Reception with informal discussions and poster viewing - 7:00-7:05 Opening remarks (Annarita Mariotti) - 7:05-7:20 Description of the Task Force and its achievements (Jim Kinter) - 7:20-7:35 Evaluating CMIP5 model performance toward improved models (Eric Maloney) - 7:35-7:50 Developing projections and evaluating regional and phenomenological differences between CMIP3 and CMIP5 (Justin Sheffield) - 7:50-9:00 Reception and poster viewing Posters will be presented by: Anji Seth (University of Connecticut), Baird Langenbrunner (University of California, Los Angeles), David Neelin (University of California, Los Angeles), De-Zheng Sun (NOAA ESRL), Jin-Yi Yu (University of California, Irvine), Julienne Stroeve (NSIDC), Justin Sheffield (GFDL), Leila Carvalho (University of California, Santa Barbara), Melissa Bukovsky (NCAR), Rong Fu (University of Texas, Austin), Sanjiv Kumar (University of Victoria), Shang-Ping Xie (University of California, San Diego), Song Feng (Stony Brook University), Toshi Shinoda (Texas A&M University), Xianan Jiang (NASA JPL), and Zaitao Pan (St. Louis University) Please feel free to circulate this invitation with interested colleagues. The Workshop is scheduled to be held immediately before the 1st Pan-Eurasian Experiment (PEEX) Science Conference & The 5th PEEX Meeting. The PEEX initiative aims to gather the European, Russian and Chinese key players in the field of climate and Earth system science to plan jointly and in a coordinated manner the future research activities in the northern Europe, Russian and Chinese region. This workshop is the 2nd meeting in a workshop series funded by Nordforsk, and the topic is 'Carbon exchange in the soil/cryosphere - vegetation - atmosphere continuum'. The workshop aims at: (i) enhancing the collaboration possibilities between different stakeholders; (ii) designing the PEEX observation infrastructure in carbon exchange research; and (iii) searching links between Nordic and Russian research and education activities on carbon exchange. We have invited senior scientists and/or PhD students from several Russian institutes to participate in this Workshop. You are also warmly welcome to participate, and suggest a presentation regarding the topic. Limited amount of travel funds are available. It was yet again a smashing hit and everyone wanted our nice fairtrade bags, the Pangea Jigsaw Puzzles, the irritating mind game the Teasing Stick and of course know about what we are doing and talk to our attending scientists.
