Building from the great work of our predecessors, our Centre has expanded enormously with nearly 200 members. Our scientific output is outstanding, with regular appearances in high quality broad and specialist journals. Our engagement in education at all levels from school children to research training is becoming ever more expansive. With Karin Jonsell joining us, we have focused heavily on communication, both internally (e.g. Bolin Days) and externally (e.g. AGU). I thank you all for making the Bolin Centre a success. 2014 will be a pivotal year for the Bolin Centre. We will be evaluated and a positive outcome of this evaluation will secure our future as a nationally leading and internationally recognized focal point for climate science. In the coming months, I will need to collect data (e.g. publication lists) from you for our coming evaluation. Your contribution is essential for our future, so please make it a priority. Here are a few dates for your calendar: ? Bolindagarna f?r skolor (May 5-9, 2014) ? Bert Bolin Climate lecture (May 21-22, 2014) ? Bolin Days with student poster competition (November 19-20, 2014*) ? AGU fall meeting in San Francisco (December 15-19, 2014) * Preliminary dates. Finally, several of our scientists will be participating in the Arctic expedition, SWERUS-C3 during the summer and autumn of 2014. Happy New Year! The aim of this EU ACCENT-*Plus* (Atmospheric Composition Change ? The European Network) Summer School is to educate and provide the participants with the necessary background scientific knowledge to understand the current issues related to the drivers, impacts and feedback between atmospheric chemistry and climate change. This is required for research or in the formulation of environmental policies. To achieve this objective, the course comprises lectures on the fundamentals of atmospheric chemistry and biogeochemistry as well on the impact of atmospheric composition change on air quality, human health, ecosystems, agriculture and the feedback with climate. The scientific diagnostic tools used to test our understanding and make predictions, viz. the observation of atmospheric composition and meteorological parameters and atmospheric modelling, both from the local or the global scale, are a key element of the course. In addition, focussed sessions are planned, comprising practical exercises, lectures on advanced topics, studies of policy documents and lectures on how to improve one?s communication skills. The school targets graduate students, postdoctoral scientists, employees from environmental agencies, public administrations etc. The attendance is limited to 50 people. The summer school fee will be about 450 euro, which includes full board, based on 2 persons sharing a room. Some rooms for single occupation are available for an extra cost of about 100 euro. Registration for the EU ACCENT-*Plus* Summer School begins on the 10Th of January, 2014 and closes on the 10th of March 2014. The ACCENT-*Plus*Summer School team looks forward to seeing you in Urbino. Benoit has been co-chief of 2 IODP drilling expeditions, 305 and 335, and many other sea-going expeditions concerning the composition and physical properties of oceanic lithosphere. He is also an enthusiastic proponent of drilling the Moho, and has co-organized many workshops and proposals for investigating the Earth's mantle. You will also hear the freshest information for both IODP expedition 345 (December 2012 - February 2013 : http://iodp.tamu.edu/scienceops/sitesumm/345/) and the ODEMAR cruise: Oceanic detachment faults at the Mid Atlantic (http://odemar.weebly.com/) that Benoit participated in this last year. Everyone is welcome. Please do not miss an opportunity to become aware of the European Funding program for Research that will be in place from 2014 to 2020. Anders Clarh?ll in the Faculty of Science Project Opportunities Office and his colleagues will inform us of this huge EU research framework replacing FP7. We will discuss the potential for Earth Science research resourcing in particular with him. Attached is a lists of calls for climate and environmental research kindly compiled by Anders. I recently attended an afternoon session on Horizon 2020 by senior scientists who attended briefings in Brussels. Linking to Small to Medium Enterprises SME's in proposals is a very prominent feature in much of this call. Most people have little idea what an SME is and how we can creatively integrate our "fundamental research" with such "mission oriented" stuff. So come prepared to expand your understanding! The administration of projects in Horizon 2020 is very much simplified over FP7. The Faculty of Science is ready to assist in project proposals and management. Note the official slideshow of Horizon 2020 available by simply Googling "Horizon 2020 download" is also attached here. I was previously at Imperial College London, where I was part of the university's ClimateSnack group. *ClimateSnack is a community that has been set up to help develop the writing and communication skills of research students and early career scientists working on topics related to climate. The focus is on communicating bite-sized pieces of climate science (the "Snacks") in a simple and interesting way by writing short pieces that explain your ideas to other researchers worldwide. Examples can be seen on the ClimateSnack.com website.* ClimateSnack already has well-established writing groups at 7 universities in Norway, the UK and the US. The members of each writing group hold meetings on a *monthly basis*. Each month, one of the members writes a "Snack", which is then circulated to the rest of the group. This allows everyone to read the Snack before the meeting is held, and think about which aspects are good and which could be made better. The first part of each meeting is dedicated to a specific aspect of written communication. At Imperial we based this on the web course given by Kristin Sainani (Stanford University). The second part of the meeting focusses on the discussion of the "Snack". The other members provide the author with feedback, focussing on how the Snack could be made into a *better piece of science communication*. Since ClimateSnack is meant to be a constructive process, it is always good to acknowledge what is positive about the Snack, in addition to suggesting possible improvements. The last 5 minutes of the meeting are then dedicated to a bit of brainstorming about topics for the next "Snack". After the meeting, the author adjusts his or her "Snack" based on the feedback received, and this is then *published on the ClimateSnack website* the following week. All the Snacks on the website have comments enabled, allowing members of the other writing groups around the world to provide *additional feedback* to the author. I have been part of ClimateSnack at Imperial [College London] for the last year, and found it an extremely useful and enjoyable activity. For example, I have used it to improve an abstract I wrote for a presentation aimed at the general public. I am therefore starting a group here at SU. The first meeting will take place *Wednesday 29th January at 11:00am, Room C615, MISU*. If you are *interested in joining *this or the following meetings, or have any questions about ClimateSnack, just drop me an email. Weather research is very much connected to and part of climate research. There will be 1500 people around the world talking about weather/climate related processes, forecast modelling research, nowcasting, medium range monthly to seasonal forecasting as well as observational systems in space, air and at the Earth surface that serve near real time data delivery for near to medium range forecasting. Also discussions of prediction of Arctic weather, tropical cyclones etc, Let me know please if you intend to attend.
