To form rain, they must grow rapidly into at least 50-100 micron-size droplets. Observations show that this process takes only 15-20 minutes. The unexplained physical mechanism of such fast growth, is crucial for understanding and modeling of rain, and known as "condensation-coalescence bottleneck in rain formation". We show that the recently discovered phenomenon of the tangling clustering instability of small droplets in temperature-stratified turbulence (Phys. Fluids 25, 085104, 2013) results in the formation of droplet clusters with drastically increased droplet number densities and strong five-orders-of-magnitude enhancement of the collision-coalescence rate inside the clusters. The mechanism of tangling clustering instability in the temperature-stratified turbulence is much more effective than the previously considered pure inertial clustering caused by the centrifugal effect of turbulent vortices. Our analysis of the droplet growth explains the observed fast growth of cloud droplets from the initial 1 micron-size droplets to 40-50 micron-size droplets within 15-20 minutes. ** *Welcome!* * *--------------------- Check all seminars: www.misu.su.se Department of Meteorology, Stockholm University -------------- next part -------------- En HTML-bilaga skiljdes ut... The workshop will be held in*Stockholm* (specific venue to be announced) on *11-12 June 2014. * If you are interested to attend, please let me know by replying to this email as soon as possible but no later than 16 March. To ensure that the right size conference room, meals etc. are arranged, please only confirm if you are fairly certain that you will attend and please keep your rsvp current. Also, if you are interested in giving a presentation at the meeting, please send me a title or 1-3 sentence description of the topic. We will include some talks by local scientists in the program, especially those who are doing work related to the workshop theme. You work could also be only indirectly related to the theme. *Workshop summary:* *Southern Ocean physics and biochemistry during the last glacial cycle. *The Southern Ocean plays a vital role in the large scale ocean circulation and associated heat transport as well as in the global carbon cycle. In particular, it is thought that changes in the Southern Ocean circulation or biological production was responsible for the oceanic uptake of CO2 during the last glacial. Proxies for past temperature, biological production and circulation of the Southern Ocean are critical to our understanding of how this may have occurred but currently they sketch an equivocal picture /[See attached figure for Last Glacial Maximum proxies from Kohfeld et al. (QSR, 2013)]. /The purpose of the meeting is to bring together a small group of physical oceanographers, biochemical oceanographers, paleoclimatologists, and atmospheric dynamists to share their latest work and to discuss what can (or cannot) be deduced about the glacial carbon cycle from the available proxies given our current knowledge. *Currently confirmed speakers (not finalized yet):* Karen Kohfeld (Simon Frazier University, Canada) Julien Le Sommer ((CNRS-Grenoble, France) Lesley Allison (University of Exeter, UK) Nathaelle Bouttes (Reading University, UK) Laura Robinson (Bristol University, UK) Jean Baptiste Sallee (British Antarctic Survey, UK) Rafaele Ferrari (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA) Sonya Legg (Princeton University, USA) Best regards, Agatha de Boer Rodrigo Caballero Johan Nilsson -- Agatha M. de Boer, Associate Professor Dept. of Geological Science and Bolin Centre for Climate Research Stockholm University, 106 91 Stockholm, Tel: +46 8 16 4730 http://people.su.se/~adebo -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It weaves the contributions of three generations of theorists and institution builders, the opportunities provided by new transformative technologies, and pressing societal needs into a narrative intended for both specialists and a broader readership. It combines themes from dynamic meteorology, aerology, dynamic climatology, and the histories of technology and organizations, starting with Marconi's wireless and the Wright brothers' flier, and culminating in 1960 with digital computing, the TIROS weather satellite, and the National Center for Atmospheric Research. A 1960 planning document crowed optimistically, "Our goal is to portray everything atmospheric, everywhere, always." In their own ways and in their own eras V. Bjerknes and his students -- including C.-G. Rossby and his students -- including Harry Wexler and his colleagues, would have agreed. Like merging and diverging streamlines on a weather map, convergence alludes to the confluence of theory, technology, and society; it also signifies institutional and intellectual conflicts and other bumps in the road leading to atmospheric science. * **Welcome!* * *--------------------- Check all seminars: www.misu.su.se Department of Meteorology, Stockholm University -------------- next part -------------- En HTML-bilaga skiljdes ut... Thus, dust can potentially modify the development of weather systems. To explore the dust-radiation effects on weather systems, a dust model was developed based on the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The calculations of dust processes in the WRF dust model include emission, advection, boundary layer mixing, cumulus mixing, dust-radiation interaction, wet scavenging, and sedimentation. Due to a high vertical spatial resolution near the surface a time splitting method was applied to the calculation of dust sedimentation to relax the numerical time step. The WRF dust model was used to investigate the impact of dust on weather systems by conducting numerical experiments with and without dust-radiation interaction. The weather systems include Hurricane Helene (2006), a convective cloud over desert, and a low-level jet in China. Over eastern Atlantic Ocean, the middle-level African Easterly Jet (AEJ) and African Easterly Wave (AEW) have strong influence on TC activities. AEJ is induced by the strong vertical wind shear, resulting from the warm Saharan Air Layer (SAL) to the north, and the occurrence of AEW is due to the instabilities of AEJ. Saharan dust, often propagating along with SAL, can modify the intensity of SAL through radiative forcing and potentially alter AEJ, AEW, and TC activities over eastern Atlantic Ocean. Dust can also have an impact on convective clouds over northern Africa. In particular, the evolution of convective clouds over desert can be altered by surrounding dust. These convective clouds often introduce strong downdrafts and outflow, resulting in more dust emission into the air. Lastly, low-level jet over Mongolia and northern and northwestern China can cause dust outbreaks, which may propagate downstream for a long distance. The dust-radiation interaction has a strong modification on the intensity of low-level jet, which in turn has feedback to the dust emission. Results from WRF dust simulations and the influence of dust on these three weather systems will be presented and discussed.
