Dear all
For the 5th year the Climate Research School at the Bolin Centre is organizing a
Innebandy tournament and a BBQ evening in order to increase the informal
contacts between scientists and students active in climate research.
We will play mixed teams between 11:00 and 13:00 in Frescatihallen and
afterwards at 16.30 we will have a BBQ with hotdogs and refreshments for
the players, the spectators, and everybody else from the four
departments who wants to take advantage of this networking opportunity!
There is no need to sign up, but an email indicating if you wish to
attend this event is appreciated so we can plan the games and the BBQ.
Don't forget 28!
Best regards

Gradient-based similarity in the stable atmospheric boundary layer
*Time and place*
Tue 13 May 2014, 11.15
Room C609, Arrhenius Laboratory, 6th floor
*
**Abstract*
A structure of the stably-stratified atmospheric boundary layer is
examined in terms of a novel gradient-based similarity theory. The
presented approach introduces similarity scales, based on the vertical
gradients of scalars, contrary to the traditional method, which is based
on fluxes. The resulting similarity functions of the Richardson number
are expressed in analytical form, valid in the entire stable boundary
layer. The introduced similarity approach allows for evaluating the
minimum values of the turbulent heat flux, the temperature standard
deviation, and the temperature dissipation rate - as functions of the
Richardson number.
The obtained results imply that the "z-less similarity hypothesis" is
not general, i.e. the considered dimensionless quantities are not
generally constant for stable and very stable conditions.

How can you tell whether it is warming up?
*Time and place*
Tue 20 May 2014, 11.15
Room C609, Arrhenius Laboratory, 6th floor
*Abstract*
How does one determine whether the high summer temperatures in Moscow of
a few years ago was an extreme climatic fluctuation or the result of a
systematic global warming trend? How does one perform an analysis of the
causes of this summer's high temperatures in the US, if climate
variability is poorly constrained? It is only under exceptional
circumstances that one can determine whether a climate signal belongs to
a particular statistical distribution. In fact, climate signals are
rarely "statistical.'' It is thus often the case that one relies on
statistical assumptions in order to compute a trend. There are other
challenges in obtaining a trend: inherent multi-scale manifestations,
and nonlinearities/non-Gaussianity, incomplete knowledge of climate
variability. We propose a non-parametric notion of a trend, we call the
tendency, that can handle multi-scale time series and that does not rely
on statistical assumptions. Its primary utility lies in the analysis of
time series with the aim of discerning structure from
processes that could be modeled as noise.

Climate Change is Happening: So What Now?
Following last year's landmark report on the scientific basis of climate
change, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), in two new
reports, predicted future food and water supply insecurities but ensured
that we can afford to transition to clean energy without sacrificing our
living standards. Is this the end of business as usual for fossil fuels?

This e-mail is for PhD students of the Bolin Centre:
Dear PhD students,
The Bolin Centre is looking to employ a team of 2-3 PhD students to take
responsibility for coordinating ?webinars?. This would mean that you would
need to attend Bolin seminars and you would coordinate broadcasting of these
seminars on the Internet and to our partners at SMHI. The estimated
commitment would be 30 hours annually (for 10 seminars) plus training. You
would not all need to be present at all seminars, but your team would need
to coordinate so that one of you was there. You will receive full training
and prolongation/payment for your time according to your Departments own
policy. The Bolin Centre will pay these costs. You will need to check with
your PhD supervisor and your Director of Studies before accepting this offer
of employment.
In Swedish, ?f?rst till kvarn? ? so, please respond quickly.
Best wishes,
Alasdair

*Abstract*
This thesis presents oceanic budgets of potential temperature, salinity
and buoyancy as well as a novel way of diagnosing water-mass
transformation in salinity-temperature space. The buoyancy of seawater
is given by a nonlinear function of temperature, salinity and pressure
and much of the work in this thesis revolves around how fluxes of heat
and salinity influence the buoyancy of seawater through these
nonlinearities.
Another large part of the material in this thesis is aimed at
quantifying the relative importance of different processes for the
vertical transport of heat and salinity in the ocean. Careful analysis
of those fluxes in an ocean model reveal the different effects of e.g.
advection, diffusion and penetrative shortwave radiation. An interesting
finding is that the diffusive fluxes due to isoneutral diffusion
(diffusion along density surfaces) and dianeutral diffusion (diffusion
across density surfaces) have opposing effects on the oceanic heat and
salinity budgets.
The final major topic of this thesis is water-mass transformation. A
quantitative framework for the study of water-mass transformation in
salinity-temperature space is introduced. A continuity equation is also
derived for salinity-temperature space, which can be used to calculate
the time rate of change of volume in a small salinity-temperature
interval. The water-mass transformation framework is applied in an ocean
general circulation model, and it is shown how the volume distribution
in salinity-temperature space is affected by the different tracer fluxes
in the model. It is also shown how the transformation framework is
related to earlier work on thermohaline streamfunctions.

Impacts of the ocean mesoscale on ocean heat

**Abstract*
We characterize impacts from the ocean mesoscale on heat in the global
climate system. Our tool is a suite of centennial-scale 1990 radiatively
forced numerical climate simulations from three coupled models, whereby the
models differ only in their ocean configuration. Analyses of various
physical ocean features in this GFDL CM2-O climate model suite reveals that
the finest resolution ocean (the CM2.6 climate model with 1/10 degree ocean
grid spacing) experiences the smallest temperature drift from the initial
conditions, and in turn the least amount of ocean heat uptake. The coarser
models in the suite include one that aims to parameterize mesoscale eddies
(CM2-1deg with a nominally 1-degre ocean grid spacing), and CM2.5 (using a
1/4-degree ocean grid spacing). CM2.5 permits mean and transient mesoscale
features, but they are far less rich and vigorous than in CM2.6. We
conclude that the relatively small drift in CM2.6 results from the vigorous
transient mesoscale eddies and the relatively energetic fine scale time mean
high latitude currents.
We highlight two features of the ocean mesoscale to support our conclusions.
First, stronger northern high latitude time mean currents in both
CM2.5 and
CM2.6 maintain a realistic sea ice extent, even in the presence of a less
vigorous Atlantic overturning circulation than in the coarsest model
CM2-1deg. Consequently, the northern high latitudes in CM2.5 and CM2.6 do
not experience the significant surface cooling realized in CM2-1deg, nor the
associated widespread North Atlantic and North Pacific sea ice
extents.Representation of fine-scale currents and the associated gyre heat
transport represents a fundamentally new regime for the fine resolution
simulations relative to the coarser models, whose heat transport is
dominated by broad-scale currents. Second, analysis of the ocean heat
budget reveals that mesoscale eddies act regionally and globally to
transport heat upward in a manner that partially compensates for the
downward heat transport from the time mean flow. In turn, the stronger
vertical eddy transport in CM2.6 relative to CM2.5 accounts for the
significantly smaller temperature drift in CM2.6. The mesoscale eddy
parameterization used in CM2-1deg also affects a vertical heat transport,
yet it is insufficient to realize the small watermass drift found in CM2.6.
Our analysis points to the fundamental role that ocean mesoscale features,
including mean currents and transient eddies, play in establishing both the
mean climate state and transient response to anthropogenic forcing.

The Representation of Atmospheric Boundary Layer Processes in Global
Climate Models
*Time and place*
Thu 5 June 2014, 10.00
Room Nordenski?ldsalen, Geovetenskapens Hus, Svante Arrhenius v?g 12
*Abstract*
The atmospheric boundary layer is the lowest part of the atmosphere,
which is in direct contact with the surface. It is here, in this
turbulent layer, that the exchange of heat, moisture and momentum
between the surface and the atmosphere takes place. This thesis examines
how well the boundary layer is described in global climate models with
particular focus on the representation of the diurnal cycle. Two
versions of the Community Atmosphere Model (CAM) that employ different
turbulence parameterizations are evaluated in the same model framework.
It is found that both overestimate the amplitude of the diurnal cycles
of near-surface variables compared to observations from flux tower
sites. The 10-m wind is much lower in CAM5 than in CAM4 due to the
Turbulent Mountain Stress (TMS) parameterization of subgrid orography in
CAM5. Additionally, the diurnal temperature range (DTR) is studied in a
large set of models participating in the fifth phase of the Coupled
Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5). The model discrepancies are large
both in simulations of the present day and in projections of the future.
A correlative approach is used to assess which parameters are important
for the model differences in DTR. No single parameter is found to be
responsible, but clouds play an important role in all seasons and so do
the evaporative fraction in summer. The diurnal cycles of these CMIP5
models are also evaluated against flux tower observations. The diurnal
cycle of temperature is well captured, while most variables show a large
inter-model spread. A subset of the models are analyzed deeper regarding
their vertical boundary layer structure for a flux site in Oklahoma. A
substantial warm summer bias is revealed in the models. Finally, the
impact of TMS and changes in the vertical diffusion in CAM5 is studied.
It is found that, although the inclusion of TMS leads to an improved
large-scale circulation, the wind turning becomes too strong, which adds
to the overestimation of the ageostrophic flow in the boundary layer.
Instead, increasing the diffusivity in stable conditions tends to both
degrade the large-scale circulation and cause an underestimated wind
turning in the boundary layer.

Seawater intrusion risks and controls for safe use of coastal groundwater under multiple change pressures
Time and place

Room H?gbomsalen, Geovetenskapens Hus, Svante Arrhenius v?g 12
Abstract
In the era of intense pressures on water resources, the loss of groundwater by increased seawater intrusion (SWI), driven by climate, sea level and landscape changes, may be critical for many people living in commonly populous coastal regions. Analytical solutions have been derived here for interface flow in coastal aquifers, which allow for simple quantification of SWI under extended conditions from previously available such solutions and are suitable for first-order regional vulnerability assessment and mapping of the implications of climate- and landscape-driven change scenarios and related comparisons across various coastal world regions. Specifically, the derived solutions can account for the hydraulically significant aquifer bed slope in quantifying the toe location of a fresh-seawater sharp interface in the present assessments of vulnerability and safe exploitation of regional coastal groundwater. Results show high nonlinearity of SWI responses to hydro-climatic and groundwater pumping changes on the landside and sea level rise on the marine side, implying thresholds, or tipping points, which, if crossed, may lead abruptly to major SWI of the aquifer. Critical limits of coastal groundwater change and exploitation have been identified and quantified in direct relation to prevailing local-regional conditions and stresses, defining a safe operating space for the human use of coastal groundwater. Generally, to control SWI, coastal aquifer management should focus on adequate fresh groundwater discharge to the sea, rather than on maintaining a certain hydraulic head at some aquifer location. First-order vulnerability assessments for regional Mediterranean aquifers of the Nile Delta Aquifer, the Israel Coastal Aquifer and the Cyprus Akrotiri Aquifer show that in particular the first is seriously threatened by advancing seawater. Safe operating spaces determined for the latter two show that the current pumping schemes are not sustainable under declining recharge.
