This workshop is sponsored by the IMI fundings and will be to MISU 6 guests: Alan Robock, Anja Schmidt, Claudia Timmreck, Kirstin Krueger, Myriam Khodri and David Battisti. Everybody is welcome to participate to the talks. If you are interested in taking part to the workshop on the afternoon and on Friday morning, please contact me directly well ahead. I have attached the program (titles and abstracts of all presentations that will be held in the morning - Wed. Nov. 5th and Thursday Nov 6th). Workshop will be entitled ?High-latitude volcanic eruptions and climate: filling the gaps? The potential climate effects of large tropical volcanic eruptions have received wide attention in the scientific climate community over the years and the effect of such powerful but short-lived volcanic eruptions on atmospheric circulation are fairly well understood. On the other hand, the duration and extent of the climate impacts of large high-latitude volcanic eruptions has been less studied and is thus not fully understood. The aim of this workshop is to bring together both the most recent model developments and the most recent scientific understanding of the effect of large high-latitude volcanic eruption on climate. The workshop will be divided in a) morning talks from the guests and b) afternoon round-tables where we discuss in more details the topics presented in the morning and try to develop common strategies to improve our understanding of high-latitude eruptions/climate interactions. The very last part of the workshop will be dedicated to geo-engineering impacts on atmospheric dynamics See attachments for the program. Best Francesco S.R. Pausata --- Francesco S.R. The workshop will exchange the recent research on understanding the processes behind isotope signals in paleoclimate archives, together with modern satellite measurements and atmospheric modelling. Various stable isotopic signals from natural archives are widely used to reconstruct the past climate, today we also have satellite measured and atmospheric modelled stable isotope, enable us to better understand the physical processes behind the isotopic signals. There are strong research interests among Bolin centre scientists on these activities. This workshop aims to exchanges ideas and establish collaboration between Bolin Centre and other international research groups. The workshop includes the presentations from guest speakers and Bolin scientists, as well as scientific question oriented discussions. We will address the following questions: 1) What is the best way to compare and use the various water isotope proxies and records? 2) What regions and time frames deserve special attention? 3) What are the main factors that controls respectively tropical and extratropical (high latitude) water isotope dynamics? Do the subtropics have a problem? 4) How comparable or how different are d18O and dD records from various types of carriers (ice, lipids, forms, trees, speleothems) as well as from satellite measurements and atmospheric modelling? 5) What are the particular strenghts and weakness of the various proxies? Where lie the main errors and uncertainties? 6) Can we come to a smart way of reconstructing d-excess? The agenda is attached. All are welcome! This study shows that months of extreme mid-latitude weather are accompanied by significantly amplified quasi-stationary mid-tropospheric planetary waves. The effect depends on the geographical region and the type of extreme weather. Isotopes in Climate and the Earth System Join the Bolin Centre?s Summer School on Islay, Scotland, and learn about isotopes in climate research. What it is about Isotopes are the basis of many powerful tools for understanding climate and the Earth system. They offer insight into climate variability at tectonic, orbital, millennial and historical timescales and help us to unravel complex processes. At the Bolin Centre Summer School 2015 you will learn about isotopes in biogeochemical cycles of climatically active substances such as water, carbon compounds and aerosols. Other topics are the use of isotopes in reconstructing the state of the past climate and in studying Earth system processes. An important part will be lectures describing how isotopes are measured in various media. The five day course will comprise four days with morning and late afternoon lectures allowing time for afternoon field trips. The sites of interest include raised shorelines, glaciated landscapes, peatlands, machair and (of course) one of Islay?s eight distilleries. On the fifth day, we will visit classic examples of Neoproterozoic glacial deposits and stromatolite-bearing cap carbonates, which have been cited as evidence for near global glaciations. The presentation will focus on monsoon and El Ni?o Southern Oscillation that represent two key modes of variability in the tropical region. Using the new results obtained for the PMIP3/CMIP5 simulations of the Last Glacial Maximum and the mid-Holocene (Taylor et al., BAMS, 2012, Braconnot et al., NCC, 2012) and a suite of past climate simulations run with the IPSL climate model, Pascale Braconnot will discuss the role of insolation, ice-sheet and fresh water fluxes in the North Atlantic in altering these phenomena. She will highlight how past simulations can help us to better understand the relationship between the mean climate and climate variability. Emphasis will also be put on ongoing work as part of the paleovar PMIP group that should help to make better use of model-data comparisons using the numerous high-resolution archives that reflect changes in inter-annual variability across the Pacific Ocean. *About Pascale Braconnot* Dr. Pascale Braconnot is a CEA senior scientist at the /Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement (LSCE)/. She has 20 years of expertise in climate modeling, ranging from coupled ocean-atmosphere model development to the use of these coupled models in different climatic contexts. Her research focus concerns the role of the ocean in climate change and climate variability with emphasis on past monsoon and inter-annual variability in tropical regions. She coordinates the international Paleoclimate Modeling Intercomparison Project (PMIP). In 2009 she received the EGU Milutin Milankovic medal for her work on insolation and climate. She has participated in the last two IPCC reports as a lead author, in AR4 chapter 9 (Understanding, detection and attribution) and AR5 chapter 9 (Evaluation of climate models). -- *Barbara Wohlfarth* Professor Department of Geological Sciences, Stockholm University, SE-10691 Stockholm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /Phone:/+46 (0)8 164883/Mobile:/ +46 (0)706 977618 /Skype:/barbara.wohlfarth/Webb:///http://people.geo.su.se/barbara /Blog:/http://barbarawohlfarth.wordpress.com/Youtube//:/ http://www.youtube.com/user/GeologicalSciences /Kiva loans that change lives: //www.kiva.org/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
