The winter school is part of the University of Helsinki Winter School 2016, which is aimed at PhD students and advanced MSc students in atmospheric/biospheric sciences from Finland and several European research projects, such as ACTRIS, CRAICC or BACCHUS. Similarly as in previous years, the course will be based on intensive work in small groups, with MATLAB being the main tool for statistical analysis. The course will particularly aim to quantify the feedbacks and relationships between atmosphere and biosphere using a variety of relevant datasets from several measurement stations. The website is now online at: http://www.atm.helsinki.fi/ABS/courses/2016winterschool.htm If you are interested, please apply online until 24 January 2016. For organisational reasons, please let us know if you are planning to participate in the school or if you intend to send your students there. After the submission mid October 2014, we received a very positive review end of March 2015. The reviewers demanded some revisions, which we were able to sort out by early June 2015. Attached you find the revised version of the proposal that was the basis for the contract signing. End of June we received the contract from the research council, which was finally signed by all partners for an official start 15 November 2015. Thus, we officially initiated CHESS and we started to put together a webpage, which will keep growing in the coming days and weeks. The web address is final, even though the content is still growing: http://www.uib.no/en/rs/chess I would also like the opportunity to introduce Ragna Breines, in CC of this email, who is the administrative coordinator of CHESS. We are now in the process of calling in the first steering group meeting and getting everything setup to sign up members (PhDs and supervisors) as soon as possible. Most importantly, for all Norwegian based national partners with PhD students and supervisors: We will have our first all staff meeting on Sotra near Bergen 2.-4. March 2016. Please mark these dates in your calendar and invite national CHESS members at your institution to sign up via the link below: http://www.uib.no/en/rs/chess/93831/chess-all-staff-meeting The first CHESS meeting will be held together with the ResClim ( www.resclim.no) all staff meeting. People have to first become CHESS members before they can sign up for the all staff meeting. However, if you are already a ResClim member, you can sign up for the meeting straight away. Please do not hesitate to contact either Ragna or myself if you have any further questions! Congratulations to us all again for getting this research school funded. Very much looking forward to working together with all of you turning CHESS into a great success! Anyone interested from the Bolin Centre and the Baltic Sea Centre are most welcome. The centres The Baltic Sea Centre’s major aim is to highlight and strengthen the marine research and education available at the Stockholm University. The Bolin Centre for Climate Research is addressing climate change issues on a global to regional scale. Common research questions The idea of meeting between the two Centers is to elaborate on common research questions: How will climate change and changes in human lifestyles affect the Baltic Sea environment, ecosystems and resources What can we learn about climate and Earth system processes in general from the natural laboratory that is the Baltic Sea? Interesting new equipment Stockholm University will get a new research vessel during summer 2016 equipped with high-end research equipment for oceanographic (biological, chemical, physical) and geophysical research. This research vessel constitutes a new research platform for scientists allowing for in-shore and off-shore research cruises and the Bolin Centre researchers are prominent future users. Thus, a further discussion issue during the meeting will be: How can make maximum use of the new research vessel Could the new research vessel in combination with the Askö field station develop into a marine and atmospheric observatory? A meeting at Askö 28-29 January 2016 We are planning a lunch-lunch workshop at Askö for presentations, discussions and facility inspection. Anyone interested from the Bolin Centre and the Baltic Sea Centre are most welcome. As there are a limited number of beds at Askö, we have a first registered rule for participation. The venue for the meeting is anticipated to be Askö, however, if the ice conditions will not allow to get us there we will arrange for a place at Frescati. Go ahead if you see someone to apply it would be excellent to collaborate on this. Once I can settle these two lidars ill go on searching for funding and collaborations. Past two weeks I was in Boulder in NEON as visiting scientist. In that period I gave a seminar in NOAA lidar group. Im looking to establish a validation point for ESA Aeolus. This is the group of Mike Hardesty. They also do applications in ocean lidar. Plankton detection. But here we can also have low level cloudiness. Also I talked to a phd student from Czech Globe. Im helping this student as well. I seems they are doing very well. Hey hope you are doing great.ill keep you posted onvthese activities. Do you know of this CHUST Committee (in this email chain). Seems they can send graduate students here to work in research. Some of the items I proposed might be of your interest as well. Just wanted to touch base with you perhaps you have one students that can apply to this and we can share this research. Let me know please. My suggestion is that we announce all of the alternative research lines to the students, by doing this we can attract students of multiple backgrounds and Master's Programmes. KTH Chemistry offers a good course syllabus at Master's level in spectroscopical methods. We will take your requirements in consideration and nominate a student for you in February. If you accept the student you can discuss with them which of the suggested projects that will be the best. Please let me know if that sounds good to you. I think it might be good if I can give a short summary of objectives and activities for each of the lines Chust is interested in. My research is more closely related to atmospheric chemistry and biogeochemical processes at the surface-atmosphere interface. Please let me know. Best regards, Javier- • Are you able to tell me during which time period the internship will take place? - I can receive students in the period May 15 to September 05 2016 • Is it possible that the student you will host can receive a scholarship/salary? I cannot confirm at this time. We have grants in NSF and NASA under review to start during 2016 summer in which we have scheduled support for students. • What kind of project will the student be working on? I have the following research lines: 1) Lidar remote sensing studies of microphysical properties of aerosols and clouds. In this line we are working on new applications of Laser polarimetry basically Full Stokes. 2) We are developing a new spectroscopy lidar based on Raman spontaneous to determine the fractions of ice, liquid and water vapor in the troposphere. 3) Chemical speciation and microphysical characteristics of volcanic ashes and Alaskan pollen using Laser Raman Spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy and SEM. 4) Changes in biogeochemical functions in boreal forest associated to extreme summer environmental conditions in high latitude. • As students from third, fourth and fifth year of their education can apply for the CHUST-program I also wonder if you have any special requirements for the students? For example do they need to have taken certain courses?. Students need to come with strong background in mathematics and physics. Preferable skills in scientific computing (MATLAB desirable). This applies to all of them. However for certain projects it would be interesting to have students with high skills in laboratory work related to lasers, optics, optoelectronics. Same students that are familiar with vibrational spectroscopy, Raman, Scanning electron microscopy. I do agree that having experiences overseas (either way) for upper level undergraduates and graduate students is excellent in planning their future careers. My personal plan for internships is to focus on a research plan that allow the student to layout a journal paper for submission later on after the internship is finished. Obviously this task requires an important interaction between faculty and students that I'm committed to. Though I recognize it might sound very hard program but this is one optimal way to stimulate students to achieve their maximum performance in doing research and in summarizing the research in a tangible paper. Learning how to write science is also and perhaps the most important weapon we can give to the students we are educating. Let me know if there is some specific information your program needs to become a host for the Chust students. I can list for your some research lines on a later time. CHUST, short for Chemical U.S. Travels, is an organization that arranges trainee opportunities in USA for students at the Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology programs. I got your contact information through William Simpson at your institution. With this e-mail i would like to announce that the CHUST committee have an interest in co-operating with you. Last summer universities like Brown, Princeton and Stanford participated in the program. I have attached a pdf with further information about CHUST as well as a letter from our chairman Professor Lars J Pettersson. An advantage with CHUST is that we will take care of the recruiting procedure. When we find a student that satisfies your requirements, we will give them your contact information. You only have to participate if we find a suitable candidate. The students that are allowed to apply for the program will have finished their bachelor's degree when attending the program. If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to contact me.
