*11 February 10-11.50**in Aula Magna* in honor of *Ray Pierrehumbert*, 
this years holder of King Carl VI Gustafs Visiting Chair in 
Environmental Sciences; HM the King will honor Ray with his presence!

In addition to an interesting  lecture by Ray with the title: "Carbon

She will give a talk in MISU on Tuesday 3 February (title TBA), and will be in the department that whole day, Wed 4 afternoon and possibly also Thur 5.

It is our pleasure to invite you to the *11^th International Conference 
on Permafrost (ICOP 2016)* to be held in *Potsdam, Germany, 20-24 June, 
2016*.

The Alfred Wegener Institute has teamed up with UP Transfer GmbH and the 
University of Potsdam to organize a great conference for you, permafrost 
researchers. The conference aims at covering all relevant aspects of 
permafrost research, engineering and outreach on a global and regional 
level.

The conference website, containing all relevant information, is now

If you wish to get all conference updates, please subscribe to our 
*newsletter *on the website. The newsletter will replace circulars.

We hereby open the *call for session proposals* that should be submitted 
online until *1 April 2015*:

If you intend to submit a session proposal, the following items will be 
requested in the online form:

1.) Title of session;

2.) Conveners (name, affiliation, and e-mail), including the indication 
of PYRN convener(s);

3.) Session description (max. 300 words).

Each session will be organized by up to three conveners (i.e. those that 
submit the session proposal). We encourage a high degree of 
internationality for the convener boards.At least one convener should be 
a member of the Permafrost Young Researchers Network (PYRN). PYRN 
conveners are students or young researchers within six years after 
completion of their doctoral thesis, however, they must not be students 
or formally under the supervision of the senior conveners of the 
according session. PYRN will find a suitable candidate, if a session was 
proposed without involvement of PYRN conveners. The conveners will be 
responsible for the selection of abstracts and for the organization of 
oral or poster presentations.

The following themes denote the diversity of research to be presented at 
the conference, but are by no means restrictive:

1.Lowland permafrost

2.Mountain permafrost

3.Planetary permafrost

4.Subsea permafrost and gas hydrates

5.Periglacial geomorphology

If key fields are not represented in the submitted list of session 
proposals, the ICOP Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and the 
International Scientific Committee (ISC) will suggest special sessions 
to cover all relevant topics.

By *30 May 2015*, a decision will be presented on the acceptance of 
submitted sessions. The decision will be based on the inherent 
scientific interest and quality of the session proposal, the potential 
to attract participants, the thematic overlap and number of available 
slots at the conference.

The *call for abstracts* for the accepted sessions will open *1 August 
2015 until 15 December 2015*. After that date, depending on number of 
abstracts being submitted to each session, the LOC and the ISC may 
propose session joining or cancelling.

We are very much looking to receiving your contribution and to seeing 
you in Potsdam to ICOP 2016!

Isotopes in Climate and the Earth System (or Isotopes on Islay)
Join the Bolin Centre?s Summer School on Islay, Scotland, and learn about isotopes in climate research. We have already many applicants, but a few places are still available. Please sew below for application details. 


What it is about
Isotopes are the basis of many powerful tools for understanding climate and the Earth system. They offer insight into climate variability at tectonic, orbital, millennial and historical timescales and help us to unravel complex processes.
At the Bolin Centre Summer School 2015 you will learn about isotopes in biogeochemical cycles of climatically active substances such as water, carbon compounds and aerosols. Other topics are the use of isotopes in reconstructing the state of the past climate and in studying Earth system processes. An important part will be lectures describing how isotopes are measured in various media.
The five day course will comprise four days with morning and late afternoon lectures allowing time for afternoon field trips. The sites of interest include raised shorelines, glaciated landscapes, peatlands, machair and (of course) one of Islay?s eight distilleries. On the fifth day, we will visit classic examples of Neoproterozoic glacial deposits and stromatolite-bearing cap carbonates, which have been cited as evidence for near global glaciations.

hosted by The Cyprus Institute and co-sponsored by leading European and
climate organizations such as the World Meteorological Organization and the
 World Climate Research Programme

Submission of papers are welcome. The meeting is preceded by a Young
Scientists Forum   in which a group of 25-40 young researchers from the EU
and Middle East North Africa interact. They are also provided time in the
main meeting to report as a group and are welcome to attend the main
conference.  The last one three years ago was very successful

The Bolin Center is prepared to consider  support for attendance of any
Bolin Centre scientists  intending to participate. Please contact  me and
Alasdair Skelton if you may be interested in  participating and presenting
your research.
For a region in turmoil that is faced by severe water and other climate
problems,  there is a great need for integrating  the  next generation of
scientists through common interests in energy, water and climate research.

Please find attached the announcement and details of the Workshop on Global
to Urban Scale Carbon Measurements to be held at the BIPM, Sevres, France
on 30 June to 1 July 2015.

The goal of the workshop is to identify requirements for advanced
measurements, standards, reference data, and instrument comparisons for a
complete global monitoring system for greenhouse gases and the verification
of emission inventories.
