We look forward to some interesting discussions in the running up before the summer. Speaker: Clive Hamilton, Professor of Public Ethics, Charles Sturt University Date: 17 June, 2015 Time: 14:00–16:00 Place: Nordenskiöld room, Geoscience Building, Stockholm University The Anthropocene as Rupture: Its profound importance and various attempts to deflate it The arrival of the Anthropocene represents a rupture in Earth history with profound consequences for humankind and the Earth system itself, consequences we are only beginning to understand. The concept grew out of the new discipline of Earth system science, which emerged in the last decades of the 20th century and supersedes environmental science. Earth system science is a ‘paradigm shift’ that meets resistance from much of the relevant scientific community. As soon as the Anthropocene concept was proposed in the year 2000, a number of scientists and social scientists have put forward interpretations that, mostly unconsciously, deflate the significance of the new epoch and the threat it poses to humankind and the Earth. It has variously been equated with the Holocene so reducing it to the familiar and unthreatening; interpreted as just another instance of ecological or landscape change, if on a larger scale; rendered banal by the discovery of historical precursors for the idea; and, framed not as a catastrophe but as a welcome opportunity for humans to remake the Earth. Each of these can be shown to be a misreading arising either from a misunderstanding of Earth system science or from the imposition of an unscientific gloss. Biography: Clive Hamilton is an Australian academic and author of a number of books, including Growth Fetish, Requiem for a Species: Why We Resist the Truth About Climate Change and, most recently, Earthmasters: The Dawn of the Age of Climate Engineering. He is currently writing a book on the larger meaning of the Anthropocene. Clive was the founder and executive director of the Australia Institute, the nation’s leading progressive think tank. He is currently Professor of Public Ethics at Charles Sturt University in Canberra. He has held various visiting academic positions, including at Yale University, Sciences Po and the University of Oxford. Very welcome! Heping has setup an unique eddy flux tower in the middle of biggest lake in Mississippi to conduct more than two years measurement of sensible heat, latent heat and so on. The results are interesting. These lake surface fluxes were totally opposite in phase to land surface fluxes. I guess that the evidence of those lake surface fluxes would be useful for you to understand oceanic surface fluxes. Heping will stay here from Monday to Thursday 8-11 May. By directly measuring eddy covariance CO2 fluxes from a large inland water body (Ross Barnett reservoir, Mississippi, U.S.A.), we show that CO2 effluxes at night are approximately 70% greater than those during the day. At longer time scales, frequent synoptic weather events associated with extratropical cyclones induce CO2 flux pulses, resulting in further increase in annual CO2 effluxes by 16%. Therefore, CO2 emission rate estimates from lakes and reservoirs that do not account for the influence of these diel and synoptic processes are likely underestimated by approximately 40%. Field measurements and modeling efforts to estimate CO2 emissions should take into account this daytime-nighttime efflux difference and the missing emissions during synoptic weather events. Bio: Heping Liu is an associate professor in Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Washington State University, Pullman, Washington, USA. His primary research interests are focused on micrometeorology and biosphere-atmosphere interactions, aiming to understand the influence of physical and biophysical processes on fluxes of energy, water vapor, and carbon dioxide over short- and long-term temporal periods in a variety of ecosystems. Heping earned his Ph.D. from Peking University in 1997 and served as a Post-doctoral Fellow at the University of Bayreuth (Germany) and California Institute of Technology before advancing through the ranks to Associate Professor at Jackson State University in Mississippi where he was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award in 2008. Speaker: Clive Hamilton, Professor of Public Ethics, Charles Sturt University Date: 17 June, 2015 = TODAY Time: 14:00–16:00, fika at 15:30 Place: Nordenskiöld room, Geoscience Building, Stockholm University The Anthropocene as Rupture: Its profound importance and various attempts to deflate it The arrival of the Anthropocene represents a rupture in Earth history with profound consequences for humankind and the Earth system itself, consequences we are only beginning to understand. In this studentship, the UK community atmospheric chemistry-aerosol global model UKCA will be used, coupled to an ocean and sea ice model. Based on the results of other parts of the ERC project, the production of gases in the ocean, snow and sea ice and their exchange with the atmosphere will be included in UKCA in collaboration with the Met Office and U Cambridge. The goal is to provide a global assessment of the past, present and future roles of sea ice for the composition and chemistry of the atmosphere in polar regions with a focus on the greenhouse gases CO2, CH4 and O3 which act on very different timescales. Furthermore, the role of snow photochemistry (polar and continental) on global atmospheric composition will be quantified. Some background knowledge of atmospheric chemistry, snow photochemistry and/or the Arctic climate system is desirable. This project is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated student with a first degree in a relevant field in physical sciences (including atmospheric sciences, meteorology, oceanography, physics, chemistry) and ideally a background in numerical modelling. 3.5 years of funding (stipend and fees) for UK/EU applicants; Application deadline 15 July 2015, Start: 01 Oct 2015. Please join us and lend your voice and work to the conversation. Convenors David Reed, University of Wisconsin Madison Sam Dunn, Colorado State University, Fort Collins Sally MacIntyre, University of California - Santa Barbara Patrick Crill, Stockholm University Session ID: 8013 B041: Inland Waters as Dynamic Foci in Climate Systems: Hydrodynamic and Biophysical Controls on Variability Session abstract Inland waters – such as lakes, reservoirs, wetlands, rivers, and streams – act as important components of carbon, water and energy exchanges in the climate system and the connections between land and associated surface waters are becoming more apparent. However, it remains challenging to quantify and scale over-water rates and mechanisms of greenhouse gas production and consumption, surface energy budgets, linkages between terrestrial-aquatic processes, and the influences of anthropogenic disturbances. These processes are regulated by many interacting biogeochemical factors (substrate quantity/quality, nutrient availability, redox chemistry, microbial community composition and physiology, etc.). This session solicits contributions that advance our understanding of physical, biological, chemical, and limnological processes that influence vertical and lateral transports of carbon, over-water surface energy fluxes, hydrologic cycling, aquatic and terrestrial water-carbon coupling, using novel approaches such as overwater eddy covariance, cross aquatic-terrestrial boundary observation, incorporation of aquatic ecosystems in earth system models, and cross-site data synthesis and scaling.
