The volcanic history of the islands is fairly well known and several explosive trachytic eruptions have been reported but the geo-chemical compositions of the glass component of the tephra as well as the dispersal of tephras to distal areas are less well known. The purpose of this study is twofold: (1) to present major element geochemistry of the glass component from several historic as well as prehistoric tephras, including the trachybasaltic Capelinhos AD 1957-58 eruption on the island of Faial, and the trachytic explosive eruptions of Sete Cidades (c. AD 1440), Fogo A (c. 5000 BP), Fogo AD 1563 and Furnas AD 1630 on the island of São Miguel; (2) to present a refined tephrostratigraphy for the island of Pico. Analyses of major element geochemistry suggest that tephras from the three active stratovolcanoes on São Miguel can be separated in biplots showing e.g. FeOtot vs.TiO2 and FeOtot vs. CaO. The tephrostratigraphy of Caveiro bog on the island of Pico is based on a radiocarbon dated core with eight tephra layers extending back to c. 7000 BP. All tephras are of trachybasaltic/basaltic trachyandesitic composition except the oldest layer, which is of basanitic composition. An attempt was made to correlate the tephra record of Caveiro bog with the previously investigated Lake Caveiro. A tephra-based correlation between the Caveiro bog and Lake Caveiro is not straightforward and only three tephras in Caveiro bog can possibly be correlated with tephras found in the sediments of Lake Caveiro. Proximal glass data from the Furnas volcano on São Miguel suggest that distal crypto-tephras found in Ireland may have an origin in the Azores and not on Jan Mayen as previously has been suggested. The similarity of the proximal tephras on São Miguel and distal tephras in Ireland is demonstrated by high similarity coefficients (>0.95) and biplots showing major element composition also support a correlation between Azorean eruptions and distal tephras in Ireland. Thus, trachytic tephras erupted from explosive eruptions on the island of São Miguel may have a potential to contribute to the construction of a European-wide tephrochronology framework. Trachytic tephras erupted from explosive eruptions on the Azores may be more widely dispersed than previously thought and may provide useful isochrones for correlation of paleoclimate archives in the north-central Atlantic, North Africa and the Iberian regions. The trachybasaltic/basaltic trachyandesitic tephras erupted from cinder cones on Pico Island are probably only useful for a local tephrochronology in the Azores region, and not for a wider Atlantic or European framework. All are welcome! Stefan, Otto and Ewa -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Even the nitrogen and phosphorus cycles get plenty of attention in their role as critical elements for food production, as well as pollutants that can eutrophy freshwater systems and the coastal zone. But in many ways, the global sulfur cycle is just as important. It was at the centre of the acid rain problem that afflicted Europe and eastern North America a few decades ago. For many years, sulfur compounds have been central to the role of aerosols in local and regional air pollution, most notably as a feature that threatens the stability of South Asian monsoon system and that drives health impacts through urban air pollution. But the sulfur cycle is also crucial in the functioning of terrestrial and marine ecosystems. In fact, one of the key feed-back mechanisms that operates in the global climate system, involving marine microorganisms and clouds, could be coupled to the sulfur cycle. This seminar explores the global sulfur cycle and its complex relationship with people with 2015 Volvo Environment Prize laureate Professor Henning Rodhe and colleagues. Please register at www.bolin.su.se/bolindays2015 IMPORTANT: Please make sure that your presentation is aimed at non-experts, i.e. people with a general knowledge of climate research This is not the time to go into tricky details of your research – save that for the experts at your group seminars A short and practical guide of how to make a successful presentation is included. Please have a look at it. Please contact your chair for information about the length of your talk Please do not overrun your time allowance. Everyone will give you the evil eye if you do. Please consider that the talk should be a few minutes less than the scheduled time to allow for questions We would really appreciate it if you would use the Bolin Centre PPT template included in this email Send your presentation to your chair so he/she can import that into his/her computer Check that the presentation works as it should in the pause before the research area session Speakers who are not members of the Bolin Center: It is a nice thing to become a member if you are speaking at our internal conference! Please follow the instructions at http://bolin.su.se/index.php/how-to-join-the-bolin-centre Information to chairs Thank you for chairing at the Bolin Days! Please register at www.bolin.su.se/bolindays2015 Please contact the speakers in your group and make sure they know their time allowance, and that this includes time for questions Please bring a computer to the Bolin Days with all your RA talks on it and make sure everything works with the presentations in the pause before your session Please do not overrun your session Please send the presentations to me after the Bolin Days Some tips for the chair: Please remind the speakers to use the clock above the audience as a reference Give the speaker a very clear 3 minute warning This allows the speaker to modify their talk if he/she is in danger of over-running Make sure that you get eye contact with your speaker (some speakers are expert at avoiding eye contact with the chairperson!) If you feel that a speaker is not wrapping up towards the end of these three minutes, give him/her a 1 minute warning Stand up and approach the speaker if he/she over-runs Please do not feel shy about doing this and making it clear to a speaker that it is time to stop talking. This is fair game for a session chair. It is not fair for the following speakers or the audience to let the current speaker over-run If despite your efforts, a speaker has over-run, feel free to omit questions and go straight to the next speaker You can use phrases such as “I am sure that NN would be delighted to take questions during the coffee break, but we are running out of time and need to move on …” Feel free to cut off someone in the audience if he/she is waffling and/or not asking a question Have confidence – this is your session! The External Science Advisory Group visit the Bolin Days The Bolin Centre External Science Advisory Group (ESAG) will visit the Bolin Days to enjoy the presentations, participate in the social events and finally give some advice to the Bolin Centre. Here is a presentation of the External Science Advisory Group http://bolin.su.se/index.php/external-science-advisory-group Interesting seminar before the Bolin Days Professor Will Steffen will give a talk titled The Anthropocene: Where on Earth are we going? scheduled for 13:00 Tuesday 17 November at Nordenskiöld room, Geoscience building. Ahead of COP21, it highlights the key priorities for ocean research in the context of global change, and its critical role in developing a societal response to climate change. Read the statement arctic *Interagency and International Research on North Atlantic-Arctic Oceanographic Processes *In 2013 the EU, the United States and Canada launched a research alliance to combine their Atlantic ocean observation efforts, the Galway Statement. Now the US National Science Foundation (NSF) has published a “Dear Colleague Letter” which provides guidance for US scientists who will request support from the NSF Division of Ocean Sciences (OCE) and Division of Polar Programs (PLR) over the next 18 months to conduct research related to the goals of the research alliance in collaboration with scientists from Canada or the EU. Further information high impact events *Strong El Niño to last until spring 2016 *Sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies during September were well above average in the central and eastern Pacific, finds the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), USA. Observed atmospheric wind anomalies and the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) are also consistent with a strong El Niño. Models predict the event to peak in late autumn/early winter and to slowly weaken through Spring 2016. The event is linked to weather anomalies across the globe, yet its consequences for Europe are less clear. More information sea level *Sea Level Change for Norway: Past and Present Observations and Projections to 2100* This report presents the current understanding of past and present observed sea level changes for Norway, and provides sea level projections up until 2100. It shows that 20th century sea level rise in Norway is consistent with the global average and discusses contributions to the change and variability, as well as the rate of sea level rise over different time periods. Further information hydrological cycles *Heavy precipitation events increased under climate change* Researchers at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Germany found that the number of record-breaking rainfall events significantly increased over 1981-2010 on a global average. Using a statistical model they explain the increase with the increased water holding capacity of a warmer atmosphere. The number of precipitation events from 1901-1980 on the other hand can be attributed to natural variability. Read the article [image: EU PRESS RELEASES] *Ahead of COP21* With the climate change conference to begin on 30 November in Paris, the EU’s negotiating position includes two central goals: a clear pathway for staying below 2°C warming and to scale up their contribution to fill the Green Climate Fund with $100 billion per year for adaptation in developing countries. Furthermore, a new UN report was published that analyses the aggregate effect of the 146 national climate action plans that have been submitted. If these “Intended Nationally Determined Contributions" (INDCs) are implemented, greenhouse gas emissions would peak and start to decrease during the next decade. Meanwhile, a European Environment Agency (EEA) report revealed that the EU’s greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 23% between 1990 and 2014 – an overachievement of its 2020 20% target. Lastly, some of the European FP7 funded research project results that support policymakers in the negotiation process are presented by CORDIS here . joint research centre (jrc) *Launch of Disaster Risk Management Knowledge Centre* The European Commission has launched a new in-house centre to help EU Member States respond to emergencies and prevent and reduce the impact of disasters. Among its activities, the Centre will offer EU countries technical and scientific advice on their risk assessment methodologies. It will also develop an online repository of relevant research results and operational outcomes, and create a network of crisis management laboratories. M. Salih Department of Meteorology, Stcokholm University, Sweden Title On Sahelian-Sudan rainfall and its moisture sources Time and place Friday December 11 2015, 10.00 Room William Olsson salen, Geoscience Building Abstract The African Sahel is one of the most vulnerable regions to climate variability at different time scales. It is an arid to semi-arid region with limited water resources. The summer rainfall is one of these sources, but it exhibits pronounced interannual variability. This thesis presents several aspects of Sahelian Sudan rainfall. Sudan is located at the eastern fringe of the Sahel and its least studied part. We have examined the impact of tropical deforestation on the rainfall, the moisture sources of the region and the temporal characteristics of the observed and modeled rainfall. In a sensitivity study we performed three simulations, one control simulation and then setting the surface condition of South Sudan to either grass or desert conditions. The rainfall was reduced by 0.1 ? 0.9 in the grass scenario and by 0.1 ? 2.4 mm day?1 (hereafter mm d?1) in the desert scenario. These changes also propagated northward into Sahelian Sudan, indicating a remote impact. The total moisture convergence into Sahelian Sudan was reduced by 11.5% and 21.9% for grass and desert conditions, respectively. The change in moisture convergence into the region motivated a comprehensive analysis of the moisture sources for the region. Two different modeling approaches, Lagrangian and Eulerian, were applied to identify the moisture sources and quantify their contributions to the total annual rainfall budget. The analysis shows that atmospheric flows associated with the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), e.g. from Guinea Coast, Central African and Western Sahel, brings about 40% ? 50% of the annual moisture supply, while local evaporation adds about 20%. The rest of the moisture comes from the Mediterranean, Arabian Peninsula and the Southern part of the Indian Ocean. While there were differences in the details between the results from the two modeling approaches, they agree on the larger scale results. In an attempt to characterize the temporal character of the rainfall, observed and modeled daily rainfall from different regional climate models was classified into five categories: weak (0.1 ?1.0), moderate (>1.0 ? 10.0), moderately strong (>10.0 ? 20.0), strong (>20.0 ? 30.0), and very strong (>30.0) mm d?1. We found that most rain-days were in the weak to moderate rainfall categories, accounting for 60% ? 75%. Days that have strong rainfall represent about 6% of the total rain-days, yet they represent about 28% ? 48% of the total amount of the annual rainfall. Regional climate models fail to produce the strong rainfall, instead most of the modeled rain-days are in the moderate category and consequently the models overestimated the number of rain-days per year. Past climate is often reconstructed by using proxies (that is observations of things that tell something about past climate, for example tree rings, pollen in lake sediments and fossils). Model simulations of past climate further increases the knowledge since it has the possibility to gap the space and time between the sparse and scattered proxy observations, since a model simulation gives relatively continuous information about the whole simulated area. Model simulations can also give internally coherent information about parameters that is not easily reconstructed from proxies (for example heat fluxes). In this thesis two periods in the past are simulated by climate models: the Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS 3), 44 000 years ago, and the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), 21 000 years ago. Both periods are characterised by low temperature, low sea level and low level of carbon dioxide. The topography in northern Europe is dominated by ice sheets covering Iceland, Norway and parts of Sweden at MIS3; and more extensive ice sheets covering Iceland, Scandinavia, the British Isles and Northern Germany at LGM. These periods are firstly simulated by a global climate model. Those simulations are subsequently used in a regional climate model to increase the level of detail over Europe. To make the regional climate model simulation more realistic vegetation simulated by a dynamical vegetation model is used in the regional climate model. The climate models simulate European climates much colder than today, especially at LGM. The temperature differences ranges from 5 to 45 °C colder than today; the largest differences being at the ice sheets where the perennial ice cover and the high altitude keep temperatures low. Precipitation is reduced with as much as almost 100 % in northern Europe due to reduced evaporation. Precipitation is increased with as much as 100 % in parts of southern Europe due to changes in atmospheric circulation. The simulations are in broad agreement with proxies, although there are differences. The vegetation model simulates tundra like vegetation (herbs and shrubs) in the ice-free parts of central and southern Europe. The eastern parts of Europe are dominated by needle-leaved trees. The short and cool summers limit vegetation. The simulated vegetation is in broad agreement with reconstructions. Sensitivity studies of vegetation show that changed vegetation can change the monthly mean temperature with 1-3 °C in some seasons and regions. The response depends on regional surface characteristics. Sensitivity studies of ice sheets show that the simulated climate is consistent with the assumptions about the ice sheet extent made in the simulation. The simulated climate is cold enough in northern Europe to support the ice sheet, and warm enough in southern Europe to prevent the ice sheet from expanding in this direction. A removal of the ice sheet would only have an effect on the local scale in the vicinity of the ice sheet, but this experiment did not include changes in the large-scale global atmospheric circulation. Although the regional climate model simulations are to a large degree depending on the global climate model simulations they provide new information. When comparing proxies with model data or studying local/regional climatic features (such as the interplay between climate and vegetation) high horizontal resolution, as in the regional climate model, is important.
