Several factors contribute to the warming asymmetry, including the greater proportion of land in the NH and the northward transport of heat by the ocean. We examine the role of ocean dynamics in setting the warming asymmetry. First we explore the impact of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) on the interhemispheric warming asymmetry, by simulating a global coupled climate model with and without a land barrier across Drake Passage. When the ACC is removed, the asymmetry in sea surface temperature (SST) warming is reduced, due to the presence of a subpolar gyre, and a lower Antarctic sea ice extent. Second we examine the asymmetry of warming when moving from coarse (1°) to eddy-permitting (0.25°) ocean resolution, using a coupled climate model in an Atlantic-like sector domain. A larger high latitude SST asymmetry develops in the 0.25° model than the 1° model, both in control runs and in warming scenarios. The larger warming asymmetry in the 0.25° model is caused by stronger boundary current heat transport and reduced NH sea ice. Finally the impact of realistic bathymetry is explored in the sector climate model. The Atlantic-like sector model is compared with a flat bottom rectangular model. In warming experiments, the rectangular models develop warming and cooling regions in the NH, while the Atlantic models have no significant cooling regions. The Atlantic models also exhibit greater sensitivity of ACC transport to wind forcing, which is likely due to a barotropic free mode mechanism in the presence of realistic bathymetry. -- Dr. Helen Coxall Senior Lecturer in Marine Micropaleontology Department of Geological Sciences Stockholm University SE-106 91 Stockholm Sweden Room R215 Tel +46 (O) 8 674 7858 Bolin Centre for Climate Research Research Area Co-Leader (Orbital to Tectonic Climate Variability) Paleogene Planktonic Foraminifera Working Group (Secretary) http://www.paleogene.org/working-group/north-europe/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Among agricultural activities, beef production stands out as one of the most consequential contributors to climate disruption. The question emerges as to whether some modes of beef production (e.g. “grass-fed” or pastured beef, as opposed to feedlot or dairy-associated beef) are more climate friendly than others. The different modes of beef production differ in the relative proportions of the major greenhouse gases — carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide — that they emit. In this talk, I analyze several modes of beef production, prevalent in North America and in Sweden, using simplified climate simulations and avoiding the use of aggregate metrics such as Global Warming Potentials. It is concluded that the best forms of pastured beef production (notably the Swedish Ranch System) can offer considerable advantages over feedlot systems, but that some forms of nominally grass-fed systems (especially those involving tropical deforestation) are worse than industrial feedlot systems by all metrics. However, even the most climate-friendly production systems, including feedlot systems employing carbon-neutral energy and fertilizer production, do not permit worldwide consumption at rates approaching the current North American levels, without making it virtually impossible to limit warming to 2°C. *Welcome! *see all seminars: misu.su.se * * -------------- next part -------------- En HTML-bilaga skiljdes ut... Below is an update on various SWERUS-related activities, including our upcoming Fall AGU session, special issues with the Copernicus journals and some general logistics. AGU FALL 2015: The call for abstract submissions to the SWERUS-inspired session "Climate-Carbon-Cryosphere interaction in the East Siberian Arctic Ocean: past, present and future" received a great response. With nearly 50 abstracts submitted, we got two oral sessions (7 talks each) and a poster session that looks super good. Look forward to meet many of you in SF. SPECIAL ISSUE - COUPLED COPERNICUS JOURNALS: There has over the summer also been good development towards the opening of our special issue, spanning over the four journals The Cryosphere, Ocean Sciences, Biogeosciences and Climate of the Past. We have two guest editor and an in-house editor for each journal and are receiving constructive support from the central Copernicus office. We are still awaiting the final thumbs up from one of the journals but still hope that the special issues will be opened in October (plan is to stay open until June 2016). The list of already planned submissions are around 60! Start/keep writing! Papers will be published as soon as accepted, and showcasted both in the general journal and in the special issue homepages. This offers an opportunity/outlet with large and collective exposure. SWERUS-C3 WORKSHOPS and MEETINGS: The tentative idea of a many-hands workshop in Stockholm in October has been canceled. There were too many scheduling conflicts, and many of us are traveling enough. There is much work going on in various constellations and that is great to see/hear. Igor Semiletov et al are likely visiting Stockholm in early November and this presents an opportunity for those local/close to the "Capital of Scandinavia" to meet up with the coordinator for the Russian side of SWERUS-C3. We will also seek to book a conference room in San Fransisco on a day where we do not have our sessions to provide a meeting/work place for SWERUS-C3 interactions. More on this later. PUBLIC DATA REPOSITORY: This is required by many (all?) public funding agencies and should give added-value to your collected/published data. We realize that all have their own favorite bins; that is fine. We will set up a SWERUS-C3 data portal at the Bolin Centre Data Repository. This is an option for some of you that like to have this as your primary location. We hope many others will at least write a metadata description of your data and place here with pointers to your primary data repository. KAW - SWERUS-C3 sub project finances: It is the responsibility for all sub-project grant holders/managers to ensure that you spend according to the budget categories that you have been awarded. We are entering the final leg of KAW financing for SWERUS-C3. Allowed costs are reimbursed after financial reports/items have been accepted. SWERUS-C3 sessions at April 2016 EGU (Vienna). The call for sessions are now open. I know there are some initiatives. Feel free to suggest sessions to EGU. It may be wise to check with rest of SWERUS-C3 community so that there are not too much overlap between various initiatives. Please remember to acknowledge KAW and SPRS in publications that relates to SWERUS-C3. We will request your help to tally a literature list for SWERUS-C3 at some point. Battisti. Title: Why was there a Little Ice Age? Quantifying climate forcings and feedbacks in coupled climate simulations of the last millennium Speaker: David S. Battisti, University of Washington Date: TODAY = Friday 11 September, 2015, 14–15 Place: Högbom room, Geoscience Building Historical and proxy data of climate show that the period 1600-1850 CE was unusually cold compared to the climate of the past millennium. This period is called the Little Ice Age. In this talk, I will briefly review the evidence for this cold period and then examine the results from PMIP3 program to simulate the climate of the last millennium, including the Little Ice Age, using the CMIP5 climate models. I will then present an analysis to illuminate the cause of the cooling during the Little Ice Age. Radiative forcings and climate feedbacks are quantified for each climate model using the Approximate Partial Radiative Perturbation method and radiative kernels. Analysis shows that the Little Ice Age cooling is largely driven by volcanic forcing (comprising an average of 77% of the total forcing among models), while contributions due to changes in insolation (10%) and greenhouse gas concentrations (13%) are substantially lower. The combination of these forcings directly contributes to 40% of the global cooling during the LIA, while the remainder of the cooling arises due to the Planck response and the sum of the climate feedbacks. The dominant positive feedbacks is the water vapor feedback, which contributes 29% of the global cooling. Images and metadata for consideration by the team of cloud observation experts should be submitted at the WMO website . - http://wmoica.org/index.php/en/ Cloud photos will be accepted until at least December 2015. http://wmoica.org/index.php/en/ *Annex II* *The International Cloud Atlas: Candidate Image Submission* This document provides a brief introduction, and hints for image submission. *Introduction* The ICA has a long and rich history. Its first edition was published in 1939, though its origins date back to the 1800s. Subsequent editions were published in 1956 and 1975, with the most recent edition of Volume II, containing more than 200 photographic images of clouds and meteors, published in 1987. Since 1987, much in the world has changed. In particular, we can now take advantage of the many high quality images from ubiquitous modern cameras, and we can use the power of the internet to make the ICA more flexible and complete. So it is time, again, to revise and update the ICA. For this purpose we are seeking new, colour, high resolution imagery of clouds and other meteors. *WMO invites you to submit candidate imagery for the new edition of the ICA.* After registering yourself on the ICA Image Submission Website at http://wmoica.org/index.php/en/ (help with this is available in Annex I or under the “Help” pull-down), simply select the “Submit Photo” or “Submit Time-lapse/video/animation”, or use the Submit New Imagery pull-down to submit your photographs or videos, and associated metadata, for consideration by WMO. *Required and Requested information* One of the aims of the submission site is to acquire as much information on the submitted photo as possible. Therefore a submitted photo or video with required information and a complete or almost complete list of additionally requested information is more likely to be selected for publication than one without. *Table 1 *describes the information sought. *What are we seeking in particular?* In all, there are more than 150 classifications of cloud types and other meteors. (You can learn more about these by consulting Volume I of the current edition of the ICA, available under the Links pull-down.) Some are very common, so we are likely to receive many candidates. On the other hand, some are very rarely seen and these are the images we most need for the new ICA. Images of these rarer clouds and meteors are more likely to be selected for publication. To give you an idea of the *‘Most Wanted Lists’*, see *Tables 2 and* *3*. The first table refers to still images, and the second to video, time-lapse or sequences. Again, it may help you to consult Volume I of the ICA to learn what some of the terms mean. *Things to Note* 1) All imagery must be in colour and of high resolution. Either photographs or video / time lapse photography can be submitted, but there are upper and lower size limits. 2) You must be the author of the imagery and you must give WMO permission to use the imagery as it wishes. You can do this by clicking on the Accept Terms and Conditions icon >>>>>>> >> -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The talk will be held on Friday, September 25th at 3 pm in Nordenskiöldsalen. Obviously, this is not intended as endorsing Nature group journals above any other, but since these journals are often seen as both desirable to submit to, as well as difficult to get published in, the talk will help give some insight into how to write and target such manuscripts. The talk may be particularly interesting to Ph.D. students, post docs and other junior researchers, but everyone is warmly welcome. About the talk: Jo is a full-time Earth Science editor for the journal Nature Communications and will give a short talk about the journal’s editorial policies and where it fits in relation to the other Nature group journals. She will also describe how the publication process operates and offer advice on preparing manuscripts for submission and publication. Afterwards she will be happy to answer any questions regarding publishing with the journal, and if anyone would like to arrange a longer one-to-one chat with Jo, please just get in touch with me. Description of the journal: Nature Communications is a multidisciplinary, online-only journal that publishes high-quality research from all areas of the natural sciences as part of the Nature Publishing Group. Prof. Wagner-Cremer will give a seminar on the significant consequences of climate change-driven lengthening of the vegetation growing season in her talk entitled: Global warming happens in spring - The active and passive role of vegetation greening during rapid climate change. Time: Wednesday 7 October, 15h00 Place: Högbomsalen, Geovetenskapens hus [cid:image002.jpg at 01D0F537.5A1BC480] Abstract Northern Hemisphere lengthening of the vegetation growing season is related to regional warming under industrial CO2 increase. This climatic trend has profound consequences, ranging from global carbon storage to biodiversity, from agriculture to public health. Accurate satellite based time-series observations of growing seasons are restricted back to 1982 when satellite monitoring began. Scarce older plant phenological observations provide data for the past ~150 years. Vegetation and climate modelling efforts both use satellite based documentation as input data. Therefore, performance weaknesses are likely related to the short reference data records. Palaeophysiology of plants sets a new conceptual, data-constrained assessment of the intimate climate-phenology link through time. Uniquely combining our palaeoecological and plant physiological expertise, this approach comprehensively investigates the active and passive role of the vegetation growing season in climate change. Plant physiological field and chamber experiments provide a) extensive information on growth patterns in subarctic plants under controlled environmental conditions, and b) accurate calibration data for palaeoecological proxies that enable quantification of growing season dynamics and transpiration changes in retrospect. This innovative approach is applied to fossil leaves preserved in peats and lakes from key-periods of rapid climate change: the termination of the last ice-age ~15000 years ago and the transition from the medieval climate optimum to the little ice age of the last Millennium. I will utilize the generated time-series data on growing season and transpiration data to quantify the coupling of seasonal dynamics to the global hydrological cycle. The palaeophysiological studies provide innovative spatial and temporal information on vegetation phenology and enables more accurate estimation of its effects on Earth's carbon and water budget through time. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Through laboratory studies, the ability of different aerosol species (dusts of different composition, biological particles, soot) is studied in detail and quantified via empirical parameterizations. These can be applied in models on different scales to predict primary ice formation, subsequent microphysical processes and finally the ice mass fraction, hydrometeor size distributions and macrophysical properties of mixed-phase clouds. In this presentation, I will review which constraints for the ice formation processes and the final cloud phase distributions are available and how they can be used. Prof. Wagner-Cremer will give a seminar on the significant consequences of climate change-driven lengthening of the vegetation growing season in her talk entitled: Global warming happens in spring - The active and passive role of vegetation greening during rapid climate change. Time: Wednesday 7 October, 15h00 Place: Högbomsalen, Geovetenskapens hus [cid:image001.jpg at 01D0FAC2.B92BCFC0] Abstract Northern Hemisphere lengthening of the vegetation growing season is related to regional warming under industrial CO2 increase.
