Please see the following post-doc announcement in my division for wildfire model development. Looks like it is somewhat open-ended and could be interesting for folks from lots of backgrounds: chemistry (emissions), physics (plume height), model algorithms (scale issues), and maybe policy (exposure and model output assessment). Cheers, Ben From: Pierce, Tom Sent: Monday, December 21, 2015 10:48 AM To: ORD-NERL-CED Seminar List > Subject: EPA federal post-doc announcement -- Air Quality Modeling of Wildland Fires Please forward this to any interested and qualified applicants. EPA Federal Post-Doc Position – Air Quality Modeling of Wildland Fires EPA’s Office of Research and Development is seeking applications from qualified post-doctoral candidates to perform research on modeling the impacts of wildland fires on regional air quality. The selected applicant will be assigned to the Atmospheric Model Applications and Analysis Branch of the Computational Exposure Division in Research Triangle Park, NC. Applications are being accepted until January 29, 2016. A brief synopsis of the research opportunity is as follows: While the characterization of anthropogenic emissions of particulate matter and its precursor species in the U.S. has improved significantly, smoke emissions from wildland fires are still poorly quantified and have nearly doubled over the past 20 years. Furthermore, climate and forest management experts predict an increase in the severity and occurrence of wildfires, which could pose an increased risk from air pollution on human health and sensitive ecosystems. EPA is thus seeking to conduct research to improve the predictive capability of its air quality modeling tools and data to more accurately simulate the impact of wildland fire smoke emissions on regional air quality. The selected post-doctoral candidate will have the opportunity to work with a multidisciplinary team that is being assembled to investigate wildland fire smoke emissions, and in particular, to improve the functionality of the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) modeling system to simulate smoke from wildland fires. Depending on the expertise and interest of the post-doctoral candidate, research areas could include emissions characterization of smoke, vertical allocation (plume rise) of smoke, fine-scale applications of coupled fire/meteorological/air quality models, and evaluation and application of regional air quality model output to assess impacts of smoke on human health. Humans influence climate in many ways. Emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) tend to warm climate, by reducing the amount of infrared radiation that is emitted to space. Increased levels of suspended atmospheric particles ("aerosols") exert a net cooling effect by directly scattering and absorbing of incoming solar radiation. Aerosols also affect clouds by acting as the seed for droplet (or ice crystal) formation. "Seeding" of clouds by anthropogenic pollution is thought to cool climate by modulating cloud reflectivity and development. Aerosol variations have also been proposed to affect the development of storm systems, precipitation and the hydrological cycle overall. Quantitatively constraining aerosol impacts on clouds and climate however is very uncertain and significantly affects predictions of climate sensitivity to GHG levels. The large uncertainty originates largely from the complex and multi-scale coupling of aerosols and clouds. Added to this complexity is the large variability and range of aerosol types, each of which is characterized with its own ability to nucleate droplets and ice crystals. This talk will present key advancements on the description of aerosol-cloud interactions in climate model frameworks through the combination of observations, theory and modeling. We will first focus on how anthropogenic pollution can synergistically interact with biogenic emissions to form aerosol, then present advancements in the physical representation of droplet and ice formation in models, and demonstrate how instrument development efforts helped solve long-standing issues regarding parametric uncertainty for droplet formation from atmospheric aerosol. We will conclude by presenting work on the importance of aerosol-cloud interactions in storm development, specifically on the role of aerosol in the rapid intensification of tropical cyclones. We focus on two areas that are dynamically and radiatively different where we know that CRH/C plays an important role at least locally. Paper I focuses on India and the summer monsoon. Here we investigate CRH/C of the three main cloud types associated with the monsoon: high clouds, stratiform clouds and deep convective clouds. To capture the whole transition of the monsoon monthly values during the time period May to October are analysed. We also investigate the difference between active and break periods of the monsoon during these months. It is found that during this time period, stratiform clouds heat the middle troposphere while they cool the upper troposphere, with the largest contribution during June, July and August. Deep convective clouds warms the middle and upper troposphere while they cool the tropical tropopause layer and the atmosphere at the cloud base. High clouds warm the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere, with the largest impact in May and July, while they tend to cool the surface. Paper II focuses on Water Vapour Intrusions (WWI) into the Arctic. Strong WWI can, together with transport of sensible heat affect the sea ice melt. We examine four different geographical sectors and investigate the CRH/C, surface temperatures and circulation patterns during winter and summer months. Our results shows that WWIs leads to an increase in cloudiness and surface warming during both winter and summer, where the corresponding CRH/C will mainly cool the upper troposphere and warm the lowermost part of the troposphere. The impact on the lower part of the atmosphere during winter is strongest for WWI coming from the Pacific Ocean, followed by the Barents/Kara Seas. WWIs from the Atlantic ocean will create an significant local warming in the Fram Strate where a large portion of the sea ice is transported out of the Arctic. Anyone interested from the Bolin Centre and the Baltic Sea Centre are most welcome. The centres The Baltic Sea Centre’s major aim is to highlight and strengthen the marine research and education available at the Stockholm University. The Bolin Centre for Climate Research is addressing climate change issues on a global to regional scale. Common research questions The idea of a meeting between the two Centers is to elaborate on common research questions: How will climate change and changes in human lifestyles affect the Baltic Sea environment, ecosystems and resources What can we learn about climate and Earth system processes in general from the natural laboratory that is the Baltic Sea? Interesting new equipment Stockholm University will get a new research vessel during summer 2016 equipped with high-end research equipment for oceanographic (biological, chemical, physical) and geophysical research. This research vessel constitutes a new research platform for scientists allowing for in-shore and off-shore research cruises and the Bolin Centre researchers are prominent future users. Thus, a further discussion issue during the meeting will be: How can make maximum use of the new research vessel Could the new research vessel in combination with the Askö field station develop into a marine and atmospheric observatory? A meeting at Askö 28-29 January 2016 We are planning a lunch-lunch workshop at Askö for presentations, discussions and facility inspection. Thank you, Best regards, JB Sallée ---------- The Université Pierre et Marie Curie is inviting applications for a 2-year postdoctoral research position to undertake high-resolution model analysis to investigate dynamical processes in the Southern Ocean polar seas. For more info, please see : https://jbs.locean-ipsl.upmc.fr/PositionModel.html (NB: webpage safety certificate needs to be updated - it will be very soon - sorry for the inconvenience) The post is attached to the WAPITI project (see http://wapiti-project.com/), which aims at mapping and unveiling the dynamics of the tri-dimensional structure of the Weddell sea circulation. The 5-year WAPITI project funded by the European Research Council aims at investigating a range of different aspects of the Weddell Sea circulation, using a combination of targeted observation, existing observation database, and high-resolution models, as well as the use of new, specifically developed autonomous instruments. The successful applicant will investigate the dynamics associated to cross-frontal exchange and mixing in the Antarctic Slope Current using a state-of-the art high-resolution oceanmodel (NEMO framework with ice-shelf and sea-ice). The dynamics allowing to cross the dynamical barrier and allowing the exchanges of water-masses across the Antarctic Slope Current are not well understood. Recent theoretical and idealized studies suggest the importance of 10 - 50 km eddy structures for this exchange. We will use a state of the art realistic eddy-permitting model to explore how water cross toward and from Antarctica shelf. In addition, strong emphasis will be given to the flow/topography interactions and the dynamics associated to it. Strong connexions between this model-based analysis and observation-based analysis will be made. We particularly seek a researcher with an interest in and talent in ocean model analysis and ability in running numerical simulations to develop deeper dynamical understanding of ocean circulation and climate. The researcher will join a team of scientists at LOCEAN-IPSL in Paris (J.B. Sallée; M. Vancoppenolle; C. Rousset) and will strongly collaborate with project partners at LGGE in Grenoble (N. Jourdain; J. Le Sommer). It is expected that the succesfull applicant spend significant time in Grenoble to engage and collaborate with LGGE partners. Informal requests for further information may be addressed to Jean-Baptiste Sallée (jbsallee at gmail.com). The deadline for panel/session proposals is 25 January 2016. Best regards, Karin Bolin Centre for Climate Research The Bolin Centre for Climate Research is a collaboration between Stockholm University, KTH and the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute. > Stockholm University, the Swedish Research Council and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency > invite you to > > Development Research Conference > > Theme: Global Visions and Local Practices > Development Research in a Post-2015 World > Stockholm, August 22-24, 2016 > http://www.su.se/devres2016 > First circular > > AIM > The aim with this conference is to provide a multi-disciplinary forum for networking and intellectual exchange among scholars who conduct research in and of relevance to low-income countries and/or engage in capacity-building collaborations. Researchers and research students will present ongoing and completed research, including projects funded by Sida and the Swedish Research Council. The conference also intends to offer a platform for dialogue and strengthen the relation between development research and policy makers. > > THEME > Development visions have gained momentum with the setting up of a new global agenda. While significant international consensus was attained around a set of normative goals (the SDG’s), their materialization calls for serious reflection. One critical set of challenges relates to bridging global goals and visions, on the one hand, and local practices, realities and conditions, on the other. Ultimately, the outcomes of this global agenda depend upon the processes through which it is implemented and embedded in concrete settings. Global visions are modified by local contexts, producing a range of unintended and diverse outcomes. Local settings are characterized by an immense diversity in modes of life, physical environments and technical systems, which invites a consideration of a diversity of paths towards improved futures. Actors at the local level may embrace, appropriate or resist global agendas. Opportunities and risks for marginalized and vulnerable groups – the key targets of the new global agenda – are of particular concern. Also important is how their own innovations and everyday practices in a wide range of spheres (environmental, health, social and other practices) can be harnessed, their capacities and knowledges mobilized and how they can influence strategies and interventions seeking to materialize global development goals. > > An emphasis on the encounter between current global visions and local contexts does not, however, entail that the great global-local challenges of our time can be solved at one specific scale. It rather actualizes long-standing questions about processes, structures and relations at multiple scales that work against, or alternatively open new avenues towards more just and sustainable futures. > > There is an acute need for reflection concerning the role of knowledge production in the new policy context. How can the competences of a broad and diverse Swedish academic community be mobilized and shape Swedish global policies and interventions? Can opportunities for critical independent research be secured? Researchers may contribute to the development of indicators, to the assessment of opportunities, risks and impacts relating to the new global agenda, but they may also reflect upon the assumptions and notions of progress underlying their own work and the new agenda and its implementation. > > Keynote speakers will be invited to address this thematic area. > > The conference is inviting panel proposals from all disciplinary backgrounds, on a range of thematic areas that relate directly or indirectly to the theme outlined above. Examples include: food and water, health, energy, infrastructure, education, poverty & inequality, gender, employment/work, urbanity, conflict/peace, climate, environment and biodiversity. > > DEADLINE FOR PANEL PROPOSALS: 25 January 2016 > Panel proposals should be submitted to devres2016 at humangeo.su.se . The proposing conveners accept full responsibility for the organization of their panel. Presenters/papers should not be listed at this stage, as these will be selected following an open call for paper abstracts to be circulated later. The Organizing Committee will decide upon and announce the final list of panels by mid-February on the conference web page. > > DEADLINE FOR ABSTRACTS: 21 March 2016 > Once the list of accepted panels is available, a new call will be circulated and abstracts will be invited – details concerning submission will be provided then. The effects of these aerosols depend on particle size and chemical composition. In order to reduce the adverse impacts and to develop the mitigation strategies for air quality control, the knowledge of atmospheric aerosols and its chemical composition is very essential, especially over the developing countries in South Asia with the highest emissions. In view of the above importance, monitoring of mass PM, carbonaceous aerosols as well as it impact on regional climate were studied over northern part of India. The long term mass level of PM2.5 were recorded (~122 µgm-3 ) (annual mean) over Delhi which is around 10 times higher than the US-EPA standard (12 µgm-3), however, the BC mass concentrations were around 7 µgm-3 (annual mean) with the highest (>20 µgm-3) in the winter and lowest in the monsoon (~ 4 µgm-3). During the winter period, the contribution of OC was 7 times higher than the EC indicating significant influence of biomass and biofuel burning (burning of wood and agricultural waste). Radiative forcing due to aerosols and BC were studied and higher atmospheric heating rates up to 1.9-2.0 K day-1 was observed over Delhi. The BC DRF was found to be larger for air masses traversing north western India, Indus Basin and Punjab, which were identified via the concentrated weighted trajectory analysis as the carbonaceous aerosol hot-spot areas over the Indian subcontinent. Our study indicates that the policy level changes is required to mitigate the excess carbonaceous aerosol over this region which ranks among the highest in India and elsewhere especially during the post-monsoon and winter seasons.
