(June 13th) Message-ID: <1464770476316.22377@aces.su.se> Dear colleagues, We at ACES-L are pleased to announce that we will host a seminar given by Nick Schutgens from the department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics, Oxford University. Details of which can be found below. Speaker: Nick Schutgens Location: Y22 Geohuset Date and Time: June 13th, 14:15 Title: How representative are our observations? Abstract: Observations are routinely used to evaluate (global) aerosol models or derive climatologies. But how representative are these observations really considering the differences in spatial and temporal domains? We have used model simulations to explore these issues and found that spatio-temporal sampling errors are usually much larger than measurement errors and similar (though somewhat smaller) than model errors. Thus representativeness of observations is a real issue in aerosol studies. I will talk about these sampling errors for a variety of observations (remote sensing, in-situ) and discuss how they may be mitigated. Welcome! These research areas will provide a home within our centre for scientists focusing on, for example, landscape, biodiversity and climate. Our new scientists will begin joining us during the autumn term after the co-leadership of the new research areas is agreed on. The new co-leaders will be proposed by the former Section Dean for Earth and Environmental Sciences (Cynthia de Wit) and the Section Dean for Biology (Sören Nylin) and decided on by the Faculty of Science at its meeting on September 14. I will contact you as soon as I know the outcome of this meeting. During the autumn term, our new research area co-leaders will become members of our Science Advisory Group which will decide on the names and research foci of the new research areas. Also, our Board will be joined by the Head of the Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences and the Head of the Department of Zoology. Just as you are welcome to join any or all of our existing six research areas, you will also be welcome to join either or both of our new research areas depending on your research interests. Please be assured that there are no negative financial implications for any part of the present day Bolin Centre. This includes research area funds, coordination funds and, of course, salaries that are funded by the Bolin Centre. Regarding new funds previously assigned to EkoKlim, our goal is that these funds are used as much as possible to support science in our new research areas, but also to bring our new centre together. The exact use of these funds will be decided on based on a recommendation that will be prepared by our new Science Advisory Group during the autumn term. The Bolin Centre will host an open forum in the autumn for all of its members to learn more about this exciting change to our Centre. Our goal is for all eight research areas to be up-and-running in time for the Bolin Days on November 16 and 17. If you have concerns, worries or questions, please call me on 076 7707699, send me an e-mail (alasdair.skelton at geo.su.se), or drop by my office (R425 in Geovetenskapens hus). This talk will review the dominant physical processes that govern the dynamics of the ocean boundary layer, and how these processes have traditionally been treated in ocean models. Challenges with using these traditional approaches in global climate models can include excessive complexity, obfuscating degrees of empiricism, significant dependence on model resolution, and poor stability of the coupled ice-ocean-atmosphere system as a whole. The talk will then present a new framework for modeling the dynamics of the ocean boundary layer based on an implicitly integrated turbulent kinetic energy budget. Because this new approach is cast in a form that is emphasizes well-known fundamental physical principles, it facilitates understanding by the broad community of climate model users, even among people with only a basic exposure to college-level physics. The implicit nature of this new approach both allows it to be used in climate models with long timesteps compared with the short timescales over which turbulence evolves, eliminates stability issues in the coupled system, and gives a remarkably weak dependence on a model's vertical resolution. Finally, it will be shown that this new approach substantially improves key aspects of the ocean boundary layer in GFDL's new CM4 coupled climate model. Invitation to the PhD Conference 2016! Deadline June 30. Sorry for cross-posting. See also the attached poster. Dear PhD Students, It is time to sign up for the annual Nordic Climate PhD Student Conference, which is organised in order to strengthen the bonds between the Nordic climate research centres and provide an opportunity for students to meet across borders. This year, the conference will be organised by ResClim/CHESS in Norway and we will also be joined by students from the Niels Bohr Institute in Denmark. Abstract deadline is 30 June. See more detailed information below and in the attached poster. All costs, except the travel costs, will be covered by ResClim/CHESS. For PhD students associated with the Bolin Centre, there will be a possibility to get travel funding from the Bolin Centre. If you are planning to travel to the conference, please contact malin.odalen at misu.su.se as soon as possible, even though you have not yet registered an abstract. The PhD Student Conference is the perfect opportunity to practice presenting your work while in a relaxed environment and get feedback from other PhD students (no seniors are present), but also to meet new people and build your future professional network. If you have any questions about the conference (abstracts, presentations, housing, food etc.), please contact erwin.lambert at uib.no From: Erwin Lambert > Dear fellow climate PhD students, We would like to invite you to apply for this year's Nordic Climate PhD Conference in Upsete, Norway. Two years ago, a collaboration of PhD students from Norway and Sweden organised an intimate gathering without supervisors or seniors. This proved to be a fantastic concept to present and discuss research with peers in a stressless environment. The conference has now become an annual tradition and this year, we hope to be joined by PhD's from the Niels Bohr Institute in Denmark, complementing a truly Nordic gathering. The conference will be held in the charming cabin Upsete Fjellstove, a gorgeous 2.5 hour trainride from Bergen, Norway. The scientific programme will be from 26-28 September. However, beds and dinner are available for those arriving on Sunday 25 September to get familiar before the science starts (highly recommended!). We will return to Bergen on Wednesday after lunch. Accomodation and meals are funded by ResClim/CHESS for all participants. Everyone is responsible for organising and funding their own travels. (PhD's affiliated with ResClim/CHESS can reclaim their travel costs afterwards). We have space for max. 40 participants, and as usual: first come, first served. To apply, please send the following information to erwin.lambert at uib.nobefore 30 June: - Name and affiliation - Title and abstract of presentation - Preference for oral/poster presentation? - Dietary requirements Looking forward to receiving your applications. Philip D. Jones is a world leading scientist on global climate change. He is principally known for his time series of global temperatures, which has been central in all reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The talk by Philip Jones will discuss what’s important and what isn’t when it comes to working with both land-based stations and sea surface temperatures from oceanic regions. More recently global temperature averages have been produced from satellite records and estimates are now being made using improved Reanalyses. His talk will also discuss the history of the series and comparisons of the various approaches used that can be used today. Scientists from the Bolin Centre will highlight some examples of the importance of global instrumental datasets for the advancement of our understanding in climate science. A perspective on Swedish temperature and precipitation data, which is a subset of global datasets, is also given. Enjoy mid summer Leonard ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: *Global Warming Prediction Project* Date: Tuesday, 21 June 2016 Subject: Holocene Climate Pattern Recognition Paper Series To: "info at climateprediction.eu" Dear Colleagues, In the last decade, GCM climate models of type PMIP2/3 and CMIP3/5 has been developed and widely used in climate science. In the past years, many of these models were tested by independent model data comparisons showing underperformance in all climate aspects, i.e., in temperature evolution, in global atmospheric circulation and precipitation in the Holocene, and in modeling the last interglacial and aeolian dust. This low model performance over past centennial time frames is a result of insufficient a priori knowledge of the internal workings of the climate system, which is characteristic of complex systems in general and which requires to make often unjustified assumptions about the system. A logical development now is that alternative climate studies increasingly appear. In a series of eight short papers, we introduce and present four major, mostly cosmic climate drivers over the multi-millennial period of the entire Holocene. Using the GISP2 ice-core temperature series, each paper describes the specifics of a certain time frame of the Holocene starting from 8500 BC. Two new short papers have been published recently, and we kindly invite you to download and read this new work free: https://www.knowledgeminer.eu/climate_papers.html Sincerely, The authors -- Leonard Barrie Professor Emeritus, Bolin Centre for Climate Research c/o Department of Geological Sciences Stockholm University 106 91 Stockholm Sweden leonard.barrie at geo.su.se -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The centre will focus on extending and disseminating knowledge about the Earth’s natural climate system, climate variations, climate impacting processes, climate modelling, human impact on the climate and climate impacts on ecosystems, biodiversity and human conditions as well as how society can minimize negative impacts through responsible management. The widened centre will keep the structure of the Bolin Centre, but extended with two new research areas, probably focusing on landscape, biodiversity and social impacts. The Bolin Centre welcomes everyone interested in any aspect of climate related research and who are affiliated to, or work closely with, one of the Bolin Centre partners (Stockholm University, KTH and SMHI). The process of merging, names and specific focus of the new research areas and practical issues of how to join the centre will be presented at the open forum, and there will also be time for questions and answers. Invitation to the PhD Conference 2016! Deadline on Thursday, June 30.
