Please put it in your diary if so. I'm please to formally announce the Marine Geology Brogger seminar for the Autumn 2016. Title: *The Last Interglacial in Antarctic Ice Cores* Speaker: *Dr. Louise Sime* of the British Antarctic Survey (Group head of Paleoclimate) Date: Thursday *20 October, 15:00-1**6**:00* Location: *Nordenskiöldsalen*, Geohuset Cheers, Agatha *Abstract* During the last interglacial (LIG; 130,000-115,000 years ago) global climate was warmer than today. In particular, measurements of water isotopes in Antarctic ice cores suggest temperatures were considerably higher than present day. This is despite atmospheric CO2 levels which were only slightly higher than those in the preindustrial Holocene interglacial. In this seminar we explore a variety of hypothesized causes of these ice core data, including the loss of the West Antarctic ice sheet, the reduction in Southern Ocean sea ice, and polar amplification of temperature changes in the Southern Hemisphere. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... He has kindly agreed to give a seminar for the Bolin Centre next Tuesday 18 October, even thought it is with a very short notice. Prof. Artaxo was the advisor for the Olympic Games 2016 inauguration which had a strong emphasis on environment and climate and he recently gave a similar seminar for 5000 people in Sao Paulo. Thus, you are all very welcome to a seminar titled Anthropocene An important scientific, social and economic challenge for our society The Anthropocene could be a new geological era after the Holocene in which we humans are a key driving force in our planet. We are changing the face of our planet in many different ways, including the composition of the atmosphere, our land and the radiation balance. Science do not fully understand yet these large changes in our planet and its consequences. Temperature increases of 2 to 6 degrees will have important impacts on the ecosystems and our socioeconomic structure. The Paris agreement is a good start in reducing emissions, but we need to do much more, requiring new science to address these challenges. The social and economic implications of climate change are also huge, and we still have to structure a governance system to deal with this new geological era. -- Agatha M. de Boer, Associate Professor Dept. of Geological Science and Bert Bolin Centre for Climate Research Stockholm University, 106 91 Stockholm, Tel: +46 8 16 4730 http://people.geo.su.se/agatha -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
