> Ändra e-postinställningar i Notiser . > > Kan du inte klicka på länkarna? Exploring three hypotheses Abstract A remarkable asymmetry in the climate system is the deep meridional overturning circulation in the North Atlantic Ocean (AMOC) that is not found in the North Pacific Ocean. In this talk, I will briefly discuss the myriad hypotheses that have been put forward for why there is an overturning circulation in the North Atlantic. I will then show results from experiments that test three of the most widely discussed hypotheses for why there is an AMOC: (i) the impact of the Rockies on the atmospheric circulation; (ii) the impact of the Rockies on the on the hydrologic cycle, and (iii) the net export of water from the Atlantic to the Pacific via atmospheric transports. These experiments also help to illuminate why there is no meridional overturning circulation in the North Pacific. A big change affecting the whole the Bolin Centre is the merger with another Stockholm center, 'EKOKLIM', resulting in the imminent addition of two new research areas with biological/ecological themes. With respect to RA6 specifically, we have decided to shift the emphasis of our research area to *pre- Quaternary climates* Consequently, we have changed the name of RA6 from 'Tectonic to orbital scale climate variability' to: 'Deep Time Climate Variability'. We think this will better unite our members, whose research stretches back across the Cenozoic, Mesozoic and into the Precambrian. To re-start things and properly introduce the new RA6, we invite you all to a 1/2 day *RA6 Deep Time kick-off* event where the co-leaders will give an introduction to the updated research area and 'what RA6 can do for you'. This will be followed by member presentations (5-10 minutes) about the aspects of their research that fall into the 'Deep Time' category. The event will be very informal. If (deep time) climate change research is only a small part of your acticvities, regard it as an opportunity to see what research others in this area are doing and discover new potential for collaborations and research directions. The workshop will be held in the Geo-house at Stockholm University, 13:15-17:00, followed by Bolin Centre-sponsored drinks and dinner in town. We suggest four alternative dates in October, which you can vote for here: http://doodle.com/poll/3mm7fk3q7m9mg5kc Please fill out the doodle as soon as you can, at the latest at the end of the week, to give us the opportunity to book the meeting venue and restaurant!! We look forward to seeing you at the RA6 Kick-Off in October. Helen Coxall and Margret Steinthorsdottir, RA6 co-leaders (helen.coxall at geo.su.se ; margret.steinthorsdottir at geo.su.se ) *if you want to be removed from the (existing) RA6 mailing list please let us know* ————————————————————————————————————————— More about the new RA6 and the workshop: At present within RA6 most of our Deep Time research is centered on: - Extremely Deep Time evolution of Earth’s atmosphere and climate variability, including Snowball Earth (Proterozoic) - Proxy-based reconstructions of climate and climate variability (Phanerozoic) - Computer simulations of Deep Time climate variability However, RA6 is open to anyone who is interested in what we can learn about the Earth system from Deep Time climate variability. We see large potential for interesting cross-cutting research projects between Deep Time researchers and scientists focusing on e.g. Quaternary climate variability; the recent biotic, hydrological and chemical responses to Anthropogenic climate change; evolution of organisms with long lineages; and not least computer simulations on numerous time scales, involving both atmosheric, oceonographic, ice sheet and vegetation modelling. See more on our website, but please note that the text has not been updated to reflect the “new RA6” yet: http://www.bolin.su.se/index.php/ra6-deep-time-climate-variability At the kick-off event we will introduce our own research (Margret and Helen), which spans the early Cenozoic to Triassic. We additionally hope to hear from a diverse cast of Deep Time interested scientists, including existing members from SU Geological Sciences, as well as prospective RA6 members from the Swedish Natural History museum with interests in palaeoclimates and palaeonvironments, and ex-EKOKLIM representatives, some of whom have interests in links between biodiversity and climate on geological time scales. Please let us know if you would like to give a presentation. The talk should include some of the following; my time period, my materials and methods, my climate discovery(ies) my climate problem(s) and future goals. The RA6 leadership will additionally provide information on how the Bolin Centre works, and how we can help support such efforts e.g. by hosting workshops on specific research topics, and providing small pots of money, e.g. small travel grants and support for seed-projects. If you have ideas about other topics for the workshop, please let us know. We look foward to an interesting and enjoyable event with fellow Deep Time-interested scientists! In order to prepare for the coming new infrastructure we hereby invite you to attend a one day course/workshop on 'AUV-based ocean science', organized by the Gothenburg Subsea Science Park*. The aim of the course is to give Swedish scientists knowledge of the science and monitoring potential that AUVs can provide through new datasets, and to have time for creative discussions about joint future projects utilizing this infrastructure. Five world leading experts (from USA, Australia, Canada and South Africa) in the field of AUV-based science will serve as course lecturers and discussion leaders. The course will be held at the Kristineberg field station (http://loven.gu.se/om-lovencentret/kristineberg), 1.5 hours north of Gothenburg, on Friday October 7th. In order to have effective discussions we will limit the number of participants to 20. In the event of over 20 interested participants, applications will be ranked according to geographical, organizational and disciplinary breadth, with the expectation that participants will spread the information and network activities at their home organizations and networks. Please find attached the preliminary course schedule. The course is open to junior and senior scientists in the broad field of marine science and technology. The course is financed through the Ekman Foundation, and there is also travel support available if needed (please indicate this when registering together with the requested amount). To registration, please use the following link: https://sunet.artologik.net/gu/Survey/1111 The registration deadline is Thursday September 15th, and the applicants will be notified of acceptance no later than September 18th. A lot of our research centres on fossil plants and animals as proxies for climate change - looking into the past to understand the present and predict the future. The workshop will be held in the Geo-house at Stockholm University, 13:15-17:00, followed by drinks and snacks. Jones is a world leading scientist on global climate change. He is principally known for his time series of global temperatures, which has been central in all reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The talk by Philip Jones will discuss what’s important and what isn’t when it comes to working with both land-based stations and sea surface temperatures from oceanic regions. More recently global temperature averages have been produced from satellite records and estimates are now being made using improved Reanalyses. His talk will also discuss the history of the series and comparisons of the various approaches used that can be used today. Scientists from the Bolin Centre will highlight some examples of the importance of global instrumental datasets for the advancement of our understanding in climate science. A perspective on Swedish temperature and precipitation data, which is a subset of global datasets, is also given.
