I promised more information in July, so here is some info a bit late: The purpose of the conference is to promote networking between PhD students in the climate sciences in the nordics, get ideas for our own research, and to have a good time without supervisors. It will take place at the Chalmers sauna in Härrydä, close to Gothenburg, Sweden. The conference will run between Monday the 25th of September and Thursday the 28th of September. The plan is to have a bus transport from central Gothenburg to the location on Monday in the evening, perhaps between 4pm-6pm. The presentations and the bulk of the activity is to take place on Tuesday and Wednesday and we have to leave the premises in the morning of Thursday the 28th. You only need to take care of your trip to Gothenburg and there is no fee for attendance. This year we would like to focus on presentation technique and on giving meaningful feedback. Apart from that, we will try to have some fun activities since we are by the lake and have a huge sauna at our disposal. Sorry for this late info, but if you have any further questions about the arrangements or anything else, don't hesitate to contact me. I attached the original ad poster as well as the location of the Chalmers bastu. -Joonas Kiviranta IMPORTANT: The Bolin Centre will cover our travel costs. Send your bills (train tickets I assume) to me, I will collect and forward them to Björn Gunnarsson. Susanne Ericsson will then reimburse you. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... How can insights from these new approaches be used improve management of deeply uncertain water-futures in urban settings? As an example of the problems that needs to be addressed in Sweden, the minimum ground height for buildings in new urban areas are today the responsibility of local municipalities (Kommuner), but has to relate to guidelines from the regional county governmental authorities (Länsstyrelser), as well as guidelines from national governmental authorities (e.g. Boverket and MSB). In such complex institutional settings, how can the new methods be applied to reduce the risks of future flooding from rising sea levels and extreme weather events? When? 20 Sept 2017, 13:00-14:00 (note: it is a Wednesday this time) Where? Geo-Building, Y22 Speaker: Christian Beer Title: Northern high latitude carbon mean residence times across systems and scales We hope to see many of you there. Kind regards Christian and Volker Abstract The concept of mean residence time (or turnover time) is useful for quantifying the dynamics of carbon cycle processes. Under the assumption of steady state of the system, this metric can be obtained by dividing a reservoir size by the amount of influx to or outflux from this reservoir. In other situations where this assumption does not hold, dynamic modelling can help quantifying the mean residence time as the reciprocal of the turnover rate constant. Here we will review latest results of carbon mean residence time in forest vegetation, thawing permafrost soils under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, and lakes in norther high latitudes. Traditionally, carbon cycle processes in high latitude ecosystems are seen to be slow due to temperature and nutrient limitations. A holistic, landscape-scale view on total ecosystem carbon content divided by gross primary production also confirms this result with mean residence times of hundreds of years. However, when considering individual vegetation, soil, or freshwater processes, and when only taking into account reservoirs that actively take place in the recent carbon cycle, such as thawing permafrost carbon instead of frozen soil organic matter, interestingly modest to low mean residence times have been estimated. This suggests a higher intrinsic turnover rate constant and a possible limitation of carbon cycle process dynamics due to a short seasonal cycle and a long-term stabilization by e.g. soil freezing. These results demonstrate that changing climate has the potential to further decrease the effective carbon mean residence time at an ecosystem level in future with implications for the carbon cycle-climate feedback mechanism. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Interdisciplinary Events (IE) look for links between disciplines in a coordinated and coherent effort, trying to create new approaches that would not be possible if handled separately. For 2018 we are proposing the following 4 IE themes: IE1 Life in the Earth system IE2 From palaeo-timescales to future projections IE3 New imaging technologies in the Geosciences IE4 Big Data Please consider if you could submit a session to one of these IE themes. We hope that IE will help bridge between communities and generate fun discussions! Sessions can be proposed at: http://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU2018/provisionalprogramme/IE and as always for EGU, all that is required at this stage are the names of 2-3 conveners (with a spread in country, age and gender), a session title, and a short session description. In addition for IE, we kindly ask to identify a Programme Group that becomes the scientific leader of the event. Accepted IE sessions will be part of the session programme of the scientific leader in addition to the IE programme. You can indicate other relevant other Programme Groups for co-organisation in the session description or comment box. EGU's call-for-sessions ends 8 September. Looking forward to exciting proposals!
