Please register through the Doodle (below) at the latest by 9 January. Welcome to the first meeting of Research area 7, Landscape processes and Climate, at Bolin Centre Research area 7 (RA7) focuses on the combined effects of changes in climate, land-use and water-use may heavily influence natural resources in terrestrial and marine environments in the coming decades. To meet these challenges we bring together natural and social scientists to do coordinated research on ecosystems. We focus on multiscale processes of climate, biodiversity, ecosystem services and adaptive governance across landscape. Bolin Centre members and colleagues, On Thursday January 19th there will be kick-off meeting for the new RA7. The aim with this meeting is to 1) present our vision of with RA7 and suggestions on interesting research topics that the RA will be focused around, and 2) an opportunity for you to present your research related to RA7. The meeting will be a mix between presentations and discussions. We, the three RA leaders, will have short presentations, and we would also like all participants to give short speed talks (ca 2min) on your research interest. Then there will be mingle and discussions. We would like to encourage everyone who is interested in these topics to join the kick-off! Please register through this Doodle if you would like to participate. http://doodle.com/poll/sggmyc9yq3r4ruh8 If you have not joined RA7 please do that at the Bolin homepage http://bolin.su.se/index.php/ra7-landscape-processes-and-climate Date: January 19th, 2017 Time: 14.00 - 17.00 Venue: Tarfala room (T40), Dept of Physical Geography, House T, 4th floor Warmly welcome! The host this time is Research Area 1 = Oceans‐atmosphere dynamics and climate. Maintenance of Baroclinicity and Storm Tracks in the North Atlantic Speaker: Prof. Dr. Thomas Spengler, University of Bergen Date: Tuesday 10 January, 2017, 13:00–14:00 Place: Alhmannsalen, Geoscience Building The lectures will usually be streamed and saved on the Bolin Centre website. However, this time the streaming will kindly be hosted by ACES at https://connect.sunet.se/bgcatm Abstract: The maintenance of baroclinicity along the mid- and high-latitude storm tracks is a matter of ongoing debate. Using an isentropic framework, a novel diagnostic based on the tendency equation for the slope of isentropic surfaces – a measure of the potential for baroclinic development – is presented. The tendency comprises contributions from dynamic processes, latent heat release, radiation, and sub-gridscale turbulence, which incorporates the effect of sensible heat fluxes. A climatology of these tendencies over the North Atlantic is compiled for the winters 2009 and 2010. It is found that adiabatic tilting flattens the isentropic surfaces, reflecting the action of growing baroclinic cyclones. This tendency is climatologically balanced by the generation of slope by diabatic processes. In the lower troposphere, the most intense diabatic increase of slope is found along the oceanic frontal zone associated with the Gulf Stream and at higher latitudes in the Labrador Sea, the Nordic Seas and the Barents Sea. Latent heat release and sensible heat fluxes both contribute substantially in these regions. A quantitative analysis of cold air outbreaks emphasises their important role for restoring the slope in the lower troposphere over the Gulf Stream region and off the sea-ice edge at high latitudes. In the upper troposphere, latent heat release due to cloud microphysical processes is the dominant mechanism maintaining the slope. This August, the Resilience 2017 conference on 'Resilience Frontiers for Global Sustainability' (http://resilience2017.org/) is happening in Stockholm. A bunch of us from the Stockholm Resilience Centre have had a session accepted on Earth system dynamics titled 'Earth Resilience'. Abstract attached below. The session consists of short talks, a panel discussion, and a linked poster session. We're looking for people to contribute poster presentations. Maybe you or one of your students would be interested in doing a poster? The abstract deadline has just been extended to January 20. Submit through the Resilience 2017 website and choose our session S66. But if you want to submit to our session, please talk to us first so we can maintain an overview over what we have! Submissions are also open for standalone talks or posters, not attached to any organised session. Thanks! Steve Lade on behalf of Sarah Cornell, Jonathan Donges, Avit Bhowmik, Jenn Hinton, David Collste, etc. ========================================================= EARTH RESILIENCE ?Earth resilience can be viewed as the capacity of the Earth system to sustain a good life for everybody on the planet. Earth resilience depends on Earth system dynamics on a planetary scale, especially feedbacks between the biosphere and the physical environment as well as the complex adaptive dynamics of social systems that are entwined with the planetary ecosystem. Developing better ways of combining and applying knowledge about these social-ecological dynamics of the Earth system is fundamental to identifying the opportunities, constraints and risks of today's globalized change in the Anthropocene. We aim to generate a transdisciplinary understanding of Earth resilience including its persistence, adaptation and transformation aspects, bringing together emerging social, ethical/philosophical and environmental perspectives. Session speakers are engaged in application-oriented global sustainability research that bridges concepts and approaches from complex adaptive social-ecological systems and Earth system science. We will discuss 'of what?' and 'to what?' questions central to Earth Resilience, acknowledging that normative and objective dimensions are entangled in our understanding of the planetary social-ecological system, and of the global safe operating space for humanity. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I hope you all had a great Winter Break. This is just a friendly reminder that deadline for abstract submission at the EGU 2017 General Assembly is fast approaching (*January 11, 2017, 13:00 CET*). I hope you will consider submitting your work to our session on deglacial and Early Holocene climate dynamics (details below). I look forward to seeing many of you there. CL1.28 The glacial-to-Holocene transition: causes and effects of deglacial climate dynamics Conveners: Willem van der Bilt, Francesco Muschitiello, Raymond Bradley, David Thornalley, Ulysses ninnemann The warming transition from the last deglaciation into the present Holocene provides a key past analogue for future climate change. Superimposed on gradual insolation-driven Northern Hemisphere warming, the glacial-to-Holocene transition was characterized by rapid and dramatic shifts of the atmosphere-ocean coupled system, major hydro-climatic changes at multiple spatial scales, as well as a profound reorganization of global carbon reservoirs. It is generally assumed that the abruptness of these events was the result of non-linear behaviour of the thermohaline circulation in response to melting (sea) ice. Yet, pressing questions remain regarding the timing and pattern of change across the glacial-to-Holocene transition and the causal relationships between different components of the climate system. Critically, the chronological uncertainty and uneven geographical distribution of paleoclimate proxy records challenges our ability to address such questions. This session invites contributions from both proxy- and model-based approaches focusing on the climate dynamics of the glacial-to-Holocene transition. With this session, we would like to advance the debate on the timing, drivers and pattern of deglacial climate change, placing particular emphasis on the interplay between atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere and carbon cycle and their impacts on the global climate system. We welcome contributions that address the entire spectrum of spatio-temporal scales, but particularly solicit studies that constrain inter-hemispheric climate interactions or capture regional climate heterogeneities. Message-ID: Dear Bolin Centre Scientists, Outreach during 2016 The Bolin Centre for Climate Research would like to get an overview of all the public outreach and media activities our members have been part of during 2016. Why is this important? There is a growing emphasis on public outreach activities when conducting research and receiving funding. With the new “proposition” of November 2016, the Swedish Government proposes a change in how merits of researchers are evaluated, to awarding more credits to those handling public outreach.
