March in Högbomsalen in Geohuset, 13:15-14:00, entitled: Fossil amphibians and reptiles as a proxy for reconstruction of Cenozoic climate evolution. Dr. Vasilyain is from the Jurassica Museum in Switzerland, and is in Stockholm on a Bolin Centre RA6 funded research visit at the Department of Palaeobiology, Swedish Museum of Natural History (NRM). Together with his host at NRM, Dr. Thomas Mörs, he is studying Miocene herpetofaunal specimens and interpreting their climatological significance. Below, please se the abstract for his talk. Abstract Due to their physiological pecularities the amphibians and reptiles are extremly useful for the reconstruction of palaeoenvironments and terrestrial ecosystems. Amphibians and reptiles as ectothermic vertebrates are dependent for their metabolic activities on the external heat resources as well as availability of water for buffering fluctation of the body temperature. A method of bioclimatic analysis of the herpetofauna has been developed for the reconstruction of the palaeoprecipitation values. The changes in their faunistic diverstiy and composition in the fossil record can be used for the reconstructions and quantification of both climate and environment of the past. The talk will present several exampled of climatic recontruction from the EOT in Eurasia, Miocene climate of Western Siberia, and climate evolution at the Plio-Pleistocene transision. It should only take you two minutes ☺. https://goo.gl/forms/73uClWgzYomkAPDX2 Many thanks, Matt From: Matthew Salter Sent: 20 February 2017 11:49 To: bolincentret-at-su.se at lists.su.se; claudia.mohr2 at kit.edu Cc: Lars.ahlm at misu.su.se; Frida Bender Subject: Bolin Centre Research Area 2 workshop - 8th May, Högbomssalen, Geohuset, Stockholm University Dear all, It is our pleasure to invite you to a one-day Bolin Centre Research Area 2 workshop to be held on Monday the 8th of May, 2017 in Högbomssalen, Geohuset, Stockholm University. The workshop will provide all members of the research area with the opportunity to learn more about the ongoing research within RA2, to explore possibilities for collaborations and to learn more about the possibilities for obtaining funding from the research area. In order to cover the breadth of research being conducted within the research area it is our intention that every member who wishes to present themselves and their research can do so. The workshop will include both lunch outside Högbomssalen and dinner at Fakultetsklubben in the evening after the workshop where we hope informal discussion can continue. To enable all members of the research area to participate, the workshop will consist of both 5 minute speed talks (maximum two slides) and longer presentations by invited speakers (which we will announce shortly) covering the major research topics within RA2. We expect that all who attend the workshop will take part in the speed talks. There are no hard and fast rules on what you can present in the speed talks so long as it is of interest to RA2 members – past, on-going or future research are all welcome. We hope that members will find the workshop to be a relaxing environment for sharing thoughts and ideas. Finally, we are also interested in whether members of the research area would like to present a poster. If you would like to, please indicate so in the registration form. To register for the workshop and dinner please visit this link before March 17th: https://goo.gl/forms/73uClWgzYomkAPDX2 and fill out the form (~2 minutes, 6 questions). We look forward to seeing you all on the 8th of May! Many thanks, Matt, Frida and Lars -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Dr Kate Moran, CEO of Ocean Networks Canada will present: The Internet-Connected Ocean Date: 3rd April at 15:00 Venue: Högbomsalen Abstract Ocean Networks Canada, an initiative of the University of Victoria, operates world-leading cabled ocean observatories that supply continuous power and Internet connectivity to a broad suite of subsea instruments from coastal to deep-ocean environments. Data from these observatories, and from ferries, gliders and moorings, fish tag receivers, and coastal radar, address pressing scientific and policy issues by providing long-term measurements of physical, chemical, biological, and geological aspects of the ocean during a critical time of climate change, ocean industrialization and increasing concern about marine hazards. Research priorities include ocean change, developing forecasting and early warning systems for tsunamis, earthquakes and storm surge, deep-sea and arctic ecosystem studies, developing automated methods for analyzing ocean ‘big data’, and establishing marine science programs in coastal communities to build resilience to ocean change. In the evening we invited the public to a lecture serie about current research on climate change and action. Please find the program attached. Klimatfestivalen will be held in Swedish. If you have kids that you think would like to come - feel free to inform their school! School classes are registered by their teacher. Available spaces tend to go fast and it is first come first served. We also hope to see you there! If you want to get involved with the organization, you are welcome to join us at the Bolin booth at the expo. At the booth visitors can meet with scientists and we would very much appreciated your assistances. Please contact me for more information. It is already being demonstrated at a growing number of facilities worldwide. However, the “Achilles heel” of CCS is its cost and safety. Much of the security risk associated with geologic carbon storage stems from its buoyancy, which can be eradicated by dissolving CO2 into water prior to or during its injection, thus allowing injection into fractured rocks. We have demonstrated the dissolution of CO2 into water during its injection in less than 5 minutes and mineral storage within basalt in two years at 20–50°C at the CarbFix field injection site in SW Iceland. [cid:C5D80866-50C0-43C9-A568-4396F4FEF8EC at bredbandsbolaget.se] Abstract Due to their physiological pecularities the amphibians and reptiles are extremly useful for the reconstruction of palaeoenvironments and terrestrial ecosystems.
