From roquet at misu.su.se Sat Sep 2 14:15:55 2017 From: roquet at misu.su.se (fabien roquet) Date: Sat, 2 Sep 2017 14:15:55 +0200 Subject: [Bolincentret-at-su.se] Workshop on the Southern Ocean, October 9-10 at MISU Message-ID: <9106F7FA-AC90-44B7-9695-55B796ADF227@misu.su.se> Dear Bolin members, I have the pleasure to announce that a workshop on the Southern Ocean will be held at the Department of Meteorology (MISU) on October 9-10, 2017. This workshop is sponsored by the Bolin Center for Climate Research, RA1. The Southern Ocean is a central place in the global thermohaline circulation. It is the only ocean basin that has an open latitude band with no continents, allowing for the existence of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, the largest current system in the World. The Antarctic Circumpolar Current redistributes tracers such as heat and carbon at the global scale, and isolates efficiently the Antarctic continent from the rest of the World making it the coldest place on Earth. Recent work also demonstrates that it is a major driver of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation that influences strongly the North Atlantic climate. As the global climate warms, it is essential to determine how the Southern Ocean circulation will respond because it has the potential to store large amounts of excess heat or carbon, providing powerful feedbacks on the climate system. Through its role on the Antarctic ice sheet stability, its evolution can also have great impact on rates of sea level rise. The goal of this workshop is to share some of the latest advances in the study of the Southern Ocean, and to foster scientific exchanges and synergies both at the Swedish and at the international level. Several prominent international researcher will be present, including Karen Heywood (UEA, UK) Andy Thompson (CalTech, USA) Gurvan Madec (LOCEAN Sorbonne Uni, Paris) Trevor McDougall (UNSW, Australia) David Marshall (Oxford Uni, UK) Carsten Eden (Hamburg Uni, Germany) Maxim Nikurashin (UTAS, Australia) Please send me an email if you’d like to participate, preferably by September 22, and let me know asap if you would like to give a presentation. This is rather unfortunate, since it would have been nice to have a continuation of this series of conferences which was started several years ago. I'm pretty sure I know where I went wrong in terms of organizing this event, my apologies for the inconvenience caused by this. -Joonas -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The host this time is Research Area 6 = Deep time climate variability. Evolution of climate and biodiversity along the Chilean coast Speaker: Steffen Kiel, Department of Palaeobiology, Swedish Museum of Natural History Date: Wednesday 20 September, 2017, 13:15-14:00 Place: Alhmannsalen, Geoscience Building The lecture will be streamed and you can watch it live here https://connect.sunet.se/bolincentre. It will also be saved on the Bolin Centre website. Abstract: The Pacific coast of South America experienced numerous dramatic climatic changes during the Cenozoic Era. Mollusks along this coastline provide one of the main exceptions from the latitudinal diversity gradient of decreasing species numbers toward the poles. From 42°S southward, coincident with the onset of the mosaic coastline of the southern Chilean fiordlands, species numbers show a twofold to threefold increase compared to the central Chilean coast. The Neogene and Quaternary fossil record (= since ca. 23 million years ago) of central and southern Chile was used to test hypotheses on the origin of this unusual pattern. Contrary to previous suggestions, no evidence was found for an accumulation of biodiversity since the Eocene, or for the northward spread of Antarctic taxa into southern mid-latitudes. Rather, the data suggest that the mosaic coastline south of 42°S was colonized after the retreat of the glaciers from their marine termini since the later Pleistocene, by taxa that were already present along the Chilean coast. Please see below for more information, or contact me at anytime. Best wishes Nina ------------------------------------------------------------------ Dear Swedish marine scientists, we would greatly appreciate your help with spreading this information to all interested researchers and teachers working with marine science. In May 2017 the project group MUST (Mobile Underwater System Tools), responsible for a coming Wallenberg national AUV infrastructure, signed a contract with Kongsberg AS and ordered a Hugin AUV. A short description of it and the ordered payload is attached to this email. Note the general payload section (60 cm long) in which other payloads can be fitted. The estimated delivery time is April 2018. The first year will be spent on courses, training and tests of the AUV and its payload sensors. After the first year we plan for it to be fully functional and ready for full-scale research projects. Projects will be awarded in an open application process based on objective peer-reviewed ranking of the projects. It is the aim of MUST that Swedish marine research of the open oceans step forward and become internationally competitive in these fields again by using this infrastructure. We would therefor like to invite Swedish scientists to be involved in the trials and education activities during the first year. This is to make sure that both tests and education corresponds to the width of the requirements of the Swedish research environment. We are now forming 5-7 working groups (WG) that will be involved in planning and implementation of one test period or education activity each, effectively designing the tests in an area where they have a research interest. As a start we have, based on the presentations given at the Kristineberg AUV course in October 2016 (http://marine.gu.se/aktuellt/e/?eventId=7090852988), identified 5 suitable mission locations in which there are Swedish scientists working on projects. These are: WG1: Gullmar Fjord WG2: Skagerrak (special focus on upper water and near-surface processes) WG3: Skagerrak (general) WG4: Baltic Sea (oxygen-depleted area) WG5: Baltic Sea (wintertime, including sea ice) Note that the AUV is capable of collecting data for several research questions during one mission, so the working groups are supposed to have marine scientists working on many different questions in these geographic areas. For example WG3 can include benthic studies in the Bratten area, locating methane pockets, studies of turbidity due to trawling. The other WG can be equally wide and diverse. It is also possible to create up to 2 other groups if need be. We hereby invite interested scientists to sign up on one of the already identified WG, or to suggest a new topic/area for a WG. We need one chair for each group and we would like you to indicate if you are prepared to chair a WG. The WG chairs are responsible for communication between the WG and MUST, and for making sure that all interested Swedish scientists are given information and a chance to get involved. The chairs will also be responsible for planning of the missions together with the AUV operational team. Please register your interest on the following link: https://sunet.artologik.net/gu/Survey/2208 Registration of interest for AUV working groups sunet.artologik.net Registration of interest for AUV working groups Deadline for registration of interest is on Sept 20, 24.00. Here, we theoretically analyse the development and equilibrium features of such an ice shelf. Using analogies with the present-day large Antarctic ice shelves, we consider the fundamental question of the stability marine ice sheets, which is a key for the possibility of very rapid sea-level changes resulting from the current global warming or triggered by past glacial-interglacial transitions. Bryan Lougheed, Uppsala University IGV, William-Olssonsalen, Tuesday, September 19, 12.15-13.00 Abstract: Late-glacial paleoclimate reconstructions from deep-sea sediment archives provide valuable insight into past rapid changes in ocean chemistry, but only a small proportion of the ocean floor is suitable for such reconstructions using the existing state-of-the-art. We employ ultra-small radiocarbon (^14 C) dating on single microscopic foraminifera to demonstrate that the longstanding age-depth method conceals large age uncertainty caused by post-depositional sediment mixing. To overcome these problems, we use dual ^14 C and stable isotope (δ^18 O and δ^13 C) analysis on single microscopic foraminifera to produce a paleoclimate time series independent of the age-depth paradigm. This new method will address large geographical gaps in late-glacial benthic paleoceanographic reconstructions by opening up vast areas of previously disregarded deep-sea archives, leading to improved understanding of the interaction between oceans and climate. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Or are you a supporter of equal opportunities? If so, please read the following article in the latest Stockholm University Universitetsnytt and leave a comment to the editor (per.larsson at su.se). https://issuu.com/stockholmsuniversitet/docs/universitetsnytt_nr_4_2017-w/12 The article focusses on my own plight as a single mom which is perhaps an extreme case - I need to take my daughter with me when I travel and pay for the flights and daycare out of my own pocket which inhibits my ability to travel and thus my research opportunities. However, I'm aware that this is also a problem for many researchers in relationships, especially international researchers. Many western countries are now changing their laws and their research council rules to allow their funds to alleviate such expenses related to work travel (see article or email me privately for details) but Sweden has no such plans yet as far as I'm aware. This problem affects men and women but women to a greater extent and is therefore also an issue of equal opportunity. The Universtitetsnytt article has come about through a desire to raise awareness about this problem. The jounalist who wrote it couldn't believe that Sweden is behind on such issues and said he may be able to write an article for the VR Curie newsletter too. But whether this goes anywhere depends on the level of response to this arcticle. If there is no response it will be seen as a fringe issue that affects only a very few. So please, if you agree the rules in Sweden needs to change to allow one to use project money to pay for dependent travel and care expenses or to allow universities to support this cost, please do take a few minutes to email your support (per.larsson at su.se) and also forward the arcticle or this email to as many as possible, also at other universities and government institutes in Sweden. For the past decade there has been a growing effort to bring together scientists in the Life Sciences, Earth Sciences, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics to explore the interaction of biological aerosol particles with cloud processes leading to rain and snowfall. This effort has been motivated by the discovery of the highly efficient power of certain microorganisms and various other biological particles to catalyze the freezing of water. The ubiquitous distribution of these biological particles in nature enables them to play analogous roles to other non-biological aerosol particles (dust, soot etc.), in facilitating the heterogeneous nucleation of condensed water that leads to precipitation in the form of rain, ice and snow. The fact that biological particles have been shown to catalyze ice formation at much warmer temperatures than non-biological particles underpins fundamental questions about how precipitation and biological systems are linked. The answers to such questions have important implications for understanding climate forcing and feedbacks, including the interplay between aerobiology, species dispersal and the planetary energy budget. As part of this effort, a series of MILAF (Microbes at the Interface of Land-Atmosphere Feedbacks) workshops have been dedicated to mentoring early career scientists who can contribute to the future of this evolving and exciting interdisciplinary research theme (this link includes details about the objectives, organization and content of previous meetings:https://bioice.wordpress.com/2016/12/26/the-milaf-meetings/). These workshops are aimed at creating collegial interactions among the diverse participants to optimize the synergy of disciplines, which often lack a common language. Thus the goal is to enhance the passion of the participants and revisit subjects where there exists consensus on the state of knowledge, while identifying the major challenges and opportunities wherein collaboration may fill distinct scientific knowledge gaps. The workshops have spurred numerous collaborations. Objectives and venue. To continue in the spirit of the earlier MILAF workshops, the next workshop on biophysical atmospheric processes will be held from 1 – 3 November 2017 at the Kristineberg location of the Sven Lovén Center for Marine Infrastructure (http://loven.gu.se/english) of the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. The workshop will focus on bridging knowledge gaps and building and growing interdisciplinary collaborations on two specific themes: 1) Non-classical approaches to nucleation in the atmosphere and 2) The significance of biologically catalyzed nucleation and precipitation for long distance dissemination of microorganisms and eventual species dispersal and co-evolution with the climate. These themes were chosen because aerosol forcing remains the single most uncertain feedback in Earth system modeling. A key lack of fundamental understanding stems from deficient representations of how ice in clouds forms and metamorphoses -- and what promotes and/or inhibits ice crystal growth. Observations demonstrate that only a minor fraction of the atmospheric particles stimulate ice formation and growth in clouds, with important implications for precipitation and cloud-radiative feedbacks. However, there is a growing consensus that biological materials catalyze ice nucleation more efficiently than other substances. Therein lies a host of interesting implications for biological, physical, and chemical sciences. For example, atmospheric dispersal of microorganisms, is a potential pathway for ancient and contemporary colonization and exchange of genetic material and thus has posed selective pressure on microbes for over 3 billion years. Microbes that have traits enabling them to actively interact with global water and element cycles may acquire benefits relative to others without such traits. Adaptations like those that would initiate atmospheric water phase transitions to trigger deposition, could promote survival and successful dispersal for such biogenic materials. That said, both the biological and fundamental molecular-level physical understanding of nucleation in the atmosphere is lacking. Organization. The workshop will be organized to facilitate rich interactions among participants and to limit, as much as possible, the costs for the participants. The activities of the workshop will balance the time dedicated to formal presentations with time for group discussion and prospection. The specific organization will be set up by the scientific committee depending on proposals from the participants. There will be no registration fees. The organizers have obtained sufficient funding to accommodate costs for about 30 participants. This funding will cover housing for the nights of 1, 2 and 3 November at the Sven Lovén Center (double occupancy in most cases), and all meals on these dates except the evening meal on 3 November. Participants will be expected to pay for their travel, and for the evening meal at the end of the workshop if they want to participate in this meal. Participants should plan to arrive on the night of 31 Oct (at or nearby the workshop site) and to depart on 4 Nov. How to participate. All participants will be expected to play active roles in the workshop. To participate, please submit two documents: 1) A short description of the topic that you would like to discuss at the meeting. This topic could be a subject for a formal presentation or for orchestrated group debate to assess the consensus or diversity of viewpoints. 2) A short statement (less than 1 page) about why you would like to participate in this meeting. In the event that the number of applications exceeds the current budget allocation, the scientific committee will either select participants among the candidates (to assure that a diversity of scientific competences are represented) or they will invite all applicants to participate but ask them to pay a registration fee so that funds for housing and meals can be distributed to all participants. Name Dipanjan Dey, PhD student at MISU Title An assessment of TropFlux and NCEP air-sea fluxes on ROMS simulations over the Bay of Bengal region. [cid:image004.jpg at 01D336AE.DDA517B0]Abstract The Bay of Bengal is a unique basin in the North Indian Ocean with SST above 28 °C , which is the threshold for active initiation of large-scale convection for most of the months in a year. In addition, the excess precipitation over evaporation and huge freshwater influx from the adjacent rivers make the upper surface features very stratified. Therefore, a careful selection of air-sea flux products for the ocean model simulations in this region is worth studying. This study presents an assessment of the TropFlux and the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) reanalysis air-sea fluxes in simulating the surface and subsurface oceanic parameters over the Bay of Bengal (BoB) region during 2002-2014 using the Regional Ocean Modelling System (ROMS).
