MISU PhD Seminar - Evelien Dekker Date: 12th April 2018, 14.15-14.45 Venue: Rossbysalen C609, Arrhenius Laboratory, 6th floor Nudging the Arctic ocean to quantify sea ice feedbacks Name Evelien Dekker PhD student at MISU Abstract With Arctic summer sea ice potentially disappearing halfway through this century, the surface albedo and insulating effects of Arctic sea ice will decrease considerably. The ongoing Arctic sea ice retreat also affects the strength of the Planck, lapse-rate, cloud and surface albedo feedbacks, but their combined effect on climate sensitivity has not been quantified. This study presents an estimate of the combined Arctic sea ice related climate feedbacks , which includes the nonlinear interactions between the various feedbacks. To do so, we apply a new nudging method to keep Arctic sea ice at its present-day (PD) distribution under a changing climate in a 50 year CO2 doubling simulation using a fully coupled global climate model (EC-Earth v2.3). We nudge the Arctic Ocean to the (monthly-dependent) year 2000 mean temperature and minimum salinity fields on a mask representing mean PD sea ice cover. Using this method, we are able to preserve about 95% of the PD mean March and 77 % of the September PD Arctic sea ice extent. Using simulations with and without sea ice nudging, we can estimate the climate response associated with Arctic sea ice changes. The Arctic sea ice feedback yields a range of 0.28 - 0.68 W/m² K. The total sea ice feedback thus amplifies the climate response for a doubling of CO2, in line with earlier findings. Our estimate of the Arctic sea ice feedback agrees reasonably well with earlier CMIP5 global climate feedback estimates and shows that the Arctic sea ice retreat amplifies to a considerable extent the global climate response. Note that the workshop will also be streamed live for those not able to attend the workshop in person. For those not familiar, the middle Miocene is  a sub-epoch that lasted from about 16 Ma to 11 Ma. It was a relatively warm period that is sometimes considered an analog for our projeted post-2100 climate. Temperatures dropped sharply at the Middle Miocene Climate Transition ~14.5 Ma after which there was increased production of cold Antarctic deep waters and a major growth of the East Antarctic ice sheet. Associated with this transition was a wave of extinctions of terrestrial and aquatic life forms called the Middle Miocene disruption. The speaker will be Zhonghui Liu, from Hong Kong University. He will present on: Interhemispheric thermal asymmetry across the Eocene-Oligocene Transition: Implications for the onset of modern-like AMOC We will go out for dinner on the Monday following the talk. Please let me know by Monday (23th April) if you’d like to join. Zhonghui will be visiting from 7-9 May (Monday to Wednesday). Please contact me if you’d like to chat with him while he’s here. Regards, David Abstract The Eocene-Oligocene Transition (EOT) around 33.7 million years ago (Ma) is arguably one of the most puzzling climate events during the Cenozoic. The EOT is marked by substantial climatic and oceanic reorganizations as demonstrated in numerous studies, yet the chain of processes or associated driving mechanisms remain controversial. Recent studies have focused on the early Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) development and a potential role it played for the EOT. Here we present some new results that are generated from IODP Expedition 342 Sites U1404 and 1411. A long time-series sea surface temperature (SST) record from U1404, from 43 Ma to 18 Ma, demonstrates a much warmer climate in the mid-latitude North Atlantic than today and an overall pattern of change similar to the global benthic d18O record. However, an important anomaly is observed across the EOT, where we see no substantial cooling associated with the earliest Oligocene glacial maximum (EOGM), in contrast to published data from the mid- to high latitudes of the southern hemisphere. The distinct interhemispheric thermal asymmetry documented may signal the onset of strong AMOC. Our preliminary work from Site U1411 shows pCO2 decline since ~34 Ma, perhaps in two steps as shown in benthic d18O (Coxall et al., 2005, Nature) but not resembling SST changes in the mid-latitude North Atlantic across the EOT. Based on our present data, the role of early AMOC development, i.e. during the Late Eocene, for the EOT remains uncertain. We surmise that pCO2 drawdown, as previously proposed, might be the ultimate cause for the EOT, while the transient nature of interhemispheric thermal asymmetry since the EOGM may have resulted from combined effects of Antarctic glaciation and Southern Ocean gateway opening. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Dear Colleagues, This email for letting you know about the CVC training school you may be interested in. If you are not interested, but you know someone that would be, please feel free to forward this message. CONVECTIVE AND VOLCANIC CLOUDS (CVC) DETECTION, MONITORING AND MODELING Nicolosi, Italy, 28 September – 6 October 2018 CVC 2018 ETNA edition! This training school is supported and organized by researchers of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate National Research Council (ISAC-CNR), the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy (BIRA-IASB), the UK MetOffice, the Oxford University, the University of Trieste and the University of Sofia, with local organization provided by island of meetings (iom). Attending the school you will get an overview of the state of the art techniques and methods for detecting and monitoring the volcanic and convective clouds, you will know the different instruments and platforms allowing us to get the best performance in detecting such kind of clouds, you will be projected to the future learning about new missions planned for solving the main issues on these fields, you will be involved in real applications as early warming systems and modeling, you will directly analize the data. The school topics will range from satellite instruments such as IR sensors or GPS radio occultations to aircraft measuremtents like lidar and radar, from study of ash and SO2 clouds to tropical cyclones, mediterranean hurricanes, land and maritime convection. The purpose of the School is to train students with outstanding research interest in the techniques allowing to detect, monitor, and model convective and volcanic clouds, to gain knowledge of the instruments and satellite missions (present and future) and to be able to support such kind of studies. The double aim is to create a school managed by young scientists already well established and recognized in their respective fields for young scientists willing to reinforce or develop their knowledge on atmospheric extreme events detection and monitoring for supporting policy makers, early warning systems and aviation safety. The extreme atmospheric event cloud detection is a high multidisciplinary and challenging topic since the same techniques and instruments can be used for meteorology, volcanic monitoring, atmospheric physics and climate purposes. Within all these fields there are still many unsolved issues making this school fundamental for creating a new generation of scientists able to use the synergy of several different instruments and techniques. The air transportation became fundamental in the last decades for the World economy and social life, and volcanic or convective events can affect the regular management and operation creating large economic losses. This training school will support creating a new generation of scientists specialized on monitoring and detection of atmospheric extreme events supporting the safety of the citizens. Most of the young researchers are usually focused in a single subject (e.g. convection or volcanic eruption) and they are not in touch with final users to get their feedbacks, this school will be the occasion for broadening their horizons and for creating useful connections. We expect scientists and final users (such as pilots or early warning system technicians) meet during this course for discussing about common goals and for learning each other how to improve their work toward a proficient collaboration. All the participants are expected to give a short talk or to present a poster about their own research. The students will leave the school with an increased understanding of the cutting-edge research questions and with the perspective of creating some future projects in this field also thanks to the network created during the school with the lecturers and other students. Grasslands on the rise Valuable ancient grasslands have declined dramatically during the last century due to the modernisation and intensification of agriculture and forestry. However, a new study by researchers at Stockholm University and the Bolin Centre shows that despite these losses, new grassland is being created all the time. Along the Baltic coast, an enormous amount of potential pasture and meadow is slowly emerging from the sea. Törnqvist Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Tulane University The early Holocene is the most recent pre-industrial warm interval with rapidly melting ice sheets, yet high-resolution relative sea-level (RSL) records from this time interval barely exist. Here we present new RSL data from basal marsh peats in the Mississippi Delta that cover the time period from 10 to 8 ka. The latter portion of this record captures the 8.2 ka cooling event that was triggered by the final drainage of proglacial Lake Agassiz. This allows us to estimate the magnitude of the associated sea-level jump at this time (1.5 ± 0.7 m). More recent work has pushed our record further back in time, showing that RSL data from the US Gulf Coast plot much higher (up to about 15 m) than globally averaged “eustatic” sea-level data of similar age. In association with this, rates of RSL rise are only about 5 mm/yr, considerably lower than what is seen from records in the opposite hemisphere (notably SE Asia). Glacial isostatic adjustment modeling is used to assess how this contrast may be explained by the relative contributions of the Laurentide and Antarctic ice sheets to global sea-level rise during this time. It can also threaten biodiversity and the survival of unique alpine plants. - It is somehow ironic that a REDD+ project created to mitigate climate change globally, might substantially reduce climate resilience locally, says Maria Johansson, researcher at the Bolin Centre and Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Science at Stockholm University. This is part of a FORMAS funded communication activity. As part of these kits, we are providing school teachers with an activity which is about how our choice of clothing can affect our carbon footprint. This kit includes items of clothing. To produce these kits in as carbon-neutral a manner as possible, we are using second hand clothing only. Thus, if you have any second hand clothing which you are able to donate, we would be very grateful. If this is the case, please can you contact Charlotte Flodin (charlotte.flodin at vetenskapenshus.se), so that she can arrange to collect these items from your office at a mutually convenient time.
