The deadline for international students is very soon. Thanks! Steve Lade ============= A top-up scholarship valued at AUD$12,000/year is available for a PhD at the Australian National University on the topic "Integrating urban transitions into global system models" with Prof Xuemei Bai as main supervisor. The student is expected to apply for and obtain the base PhD stipend from the University (~AUD$27,000/year), which this top-up will supplement. The deadlines for application to the ANU's PhD program in order to be considered for the stipend are 31 August 2018 for international students and 31 October 2018 for domestic Australian students. See http://www.anu.edu.au/study/apply/anu-postgraduate-research-domestic-and-international-applications http://www.anu.edu.au/students/scholarships-fees/scholarships/anu-phd-scholarships for further information about admission. Further information about the top-up scholarship follows: Project title: Integrating urban transitions into global system models Value: AUD$12000/year ($7000/year scholarship plus $5000/year project support) Overview: How human-dominated complex systems like cities behave is critical to understanding and solving the world’s sustainability challenges. Yet cities are treated as little more than consumers of resources and producers of waste in conventional Earth system models. This project will study sustainability transitions in cities and build prototype models for including sustainability transitions with cities as active agents in Earth system models. Project outputs could include: (1) A typology of sustainability transitions at the city scale. (2) A series of models of sustainability transitions, informed by case studies from East Asia, South Asia, Africa, South America, Europe and Australia. (3) Linking these models of sustainability transitions to Earth system models, possibly using the COPAN:CORE World-Earth modelling platform. Eligibility: Bachelors degree with first-class honours, or a research Masters degree from a recognised university. Australian and New Zealand citizens; permanent residents of Australia; international students who hold an AGRTP International Scholarship. Selection is based on academic merit and the candidate’s research proposal. The successful candidate will ideally have experience in system dynamics modelling, ABMs, and/or other computer modelling; some statistics skills; knowledge of urban theory, social-ecological system theory, and/or other relevant social science theory; and be capable of writing quality scientific articles for leading international journals. Domestic students must obtain a PhD stipend scholarship at The Australian National University. International students must hold an AGRTP International Scholarship. Benefits: A top-up payment of AUD$7000/year, tax free in fortnightly instalments, additional to a PhD stipend obtained by the candidate. Project funding of AUD$5000/year to support conference travel, fieldwork if deemed necessary, and other project costs. Some additional School support is also available for project costs. How to apply: The successful candidate will be invited to apply for a PhD stipend scholarship at The Australian National University (AUD$27,082 tax free (2018 rate) for 3 years). The closing dates for applications for a PhD stipend scholarship at The Australian National University are: International - 31 August 2018; Domestic - 31 October 2018. Interested individuals are invited to discuss the project with Professor Xuemei Bai (02 6125 7825 or xuemei.bai at anu.edu.au) or Dr Steven Lade (steven.lade at anu.edu.au) and must submit a CV and a one page statement of possible research directions to xuemei.bai at anu.edu.au by 1 October 2018 for domestic students or 20 August 2018 for international students. Queries regarding scholarship matters can be directed to Amy.Chen at anu.edu.au. The candidate would be expected to commence the doctoral program in early 2019. Further information: In the latest World University Rankings, The Australian National University was the top institution in Australia for environmental research and ranked within the world top ten. The Fenner School of Environment and Society has a large, dynamic community of PhD students who are provided with high quality office facilities and computer and statistical support. Students are encouraged to collaborate widely and attend national and international conferences. *************************************** Dr Steven Lade www.stevenlade.net @StevenLade https://scholar.google.se/citations?user=OwkVsWEAAAAJ Subject Editor, Ecology and Society Researcher, Stockholm Resilience Centre, Stockholm University www.stockholmresilience.su.se Honorary Senior Lecturer, Fenner School of Environment and Society, Australian National University fennerschool.anu.edu.au *************************************** -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Next weeks first seminar is with Prof. Dr. Heini Wernli from the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science, ETH Zurich, Switzerland. On the linkage between cloud physics and extratropical dynamics Research interests There are several ways how clouds influence the weather. The obvious ways are that clouds produce precipitation and reduce solar surface radiation. A more subtle influence of clouds on weather comes from the latent heat release due to phase transitions of water in clouds. This energy input to the atmospheric circulation can have important consequences: latent heating, in particular in the so-called warm conveyor belt airstream, contributes to the intensification of extratropical cyclones, and it can modify Rossby waves, the jet stream and the formation of blocks in the upper troposphere. This presentation will explain the fundamentals how these cloud-dynamics interactions occur, and it will present results from two ongoing projects in my research group. Time Tuesday September 4th, 11.15 Place Rossbysalen C 609, Arrhenius Laboratory, 6th floor Thursday September 6 Sebastian Scher will hold a seminar: Climate change makes weather forecasting less difficult Research interests: Global warming projections point to a wide range of impacts on the climate system, including changes in storm track activity and more frequent and intense extreme weather events. Little is however known on whether and how global warming may affect the atmosphere's intrinsic predictability and thus our ability to produce skillful weather forecasts. I will 1) show with a combination of a climate model and a numerical ensemble weather prediction model that global warming will actually increase the predictability of the atmosphere in the extratropics, thus making weather forecasts easier, and 2) discuss the physical causes behind this.
