Bolin Centre Seminar Series | Research Area 7 Hosted by RA7 = Landscape processes and climate Speaker Professor Giuliano Di Baldassarre, Department of Earth Sciences, Uppsala University Title Human-water interactions in changing environments When and where TODAY December 3 at 13h00-14h00 in Högbomsalen, Geoscience Building Can´t join us? Watch it live here: https://connect.sunet.se/bolincentre Fika will be served. Abstract A In the Anthropocene, humans continuously impact, and respond to, hydrological change. Socio-hydrology has made substantial progress in putting humans into the equation, but novel approaches are required to better integrate qualitative and quantitative information. Power relationships, trust, social stratification, cultural beliefs, and cognitive biases strongly influence the way in which people alter, and adapt to, the hydrological regime. One of the grand challenges is how to capture these key aspects that are typically described in a qualitative way. This requires more engagement with social scientists, and the development of new methods to formulate and test alternative hypotheses about the interplay of water and society. Please consider sending an abstract to the EGU2019-session CL4.12/AS4.12/CR1.14/OS1.29 Climate Variability and Prediction in High Latitudes Conveners: Torben Koenigk, Yongqi Gao, Helge Gössling, Neven Fuckar ( https://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU2019/session/31764 ). This session aims for a better understanding of high-latitude climate variations, predictability and predictions but also of the potential consequences for ecology and socio-economy. Please find details on the session below. Kind regards, Torben Koenigk The Arctic sea ice and high latitude atmosphere and oceans have experienced significant changes over the modern observational era. The polar climate is crucial for the Earth’s energy and water budget, and its variability and change have direct socio-economic and ecological impacts. Thus, understanding high-latitude variability and improving predictions of high latitude climate is highly important for society. Predictability studies indicate that decadal to multi-decadal variations in the oceans and sub-seasonal to multi-year sea ice variations are the largest sources of predictability in high latitudes. However, dynamical model predictions are not yet in the position to provide us with accurate predictions of the polar climate. Main reasons for this are the lack of observations in high latitudes, insufficient initialization methods and shortcomings of climate models in representing some of the important climate processes in high latitudes. This session aims for a better understanding and better representation of the mechanisms that control high latitude climate variability and predictability in both hemispheres at sub-seasonal to multi-decadal time-scales in past, recent and future climates. Further, the session aims to discuss ongoing efforts to improve climate predictions at high latitudes at various time scales (as e.g. usage of additional observations for initialization, improved initialization methods, impact of higher resolution, improved parameterizations) and potential teleconnections of high latitude climate with lower latitude climate. We also aim to link polar climate variability and predictions to potential ecological and socio-economic impacts and encourage submissions on this topic. This session offers the possibility to present results from the ongoing projects and research efforts on the topic of high-latitude climate variability and prediction, including, but not limited to Year of Polar Prediction (YOPP), and the ARCPATH-project (Arctic Climate Predictions - Pathways to Resilient, Sustainable Societies). -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Merry Christmas and Happy New Year The Directors would like to extend their thanks to all members of the Bolin Centre for making 2018 such a successful year. In the face of climate change, your work to create the fundamental knowledge that must underpin future decisions is ever more important. Thank you also for our best ever Bolin Days. The tenth celebration of climate science is one we will remember for a long time. Finally, we add our special thanks to HC Hansson and Björn Gunnarson, who after supporting the Bolin Centre and its Climate Research School for most of its lifetime, will step down. We wish you merry christmas, a happy new year, and look forward to seeing you again 2019! [Bild] The gene helping submerged plants Climate change threatens plants as the risks of flooding increase. A new study from Stockholm University (https://www.su.se/deep/english/about-us/news/the-gene-helping-submerged-plants-1.417722) shows that special genes are key to keeping plants from withering, remaining healthy and resistant to a lack of oxygen when they are under water for a period of long time.
