From agatha.deboer at geo.su.se Thu Jan 4 13:09:28 2018 From: agatha.deboer at geo.su.se (Agatha de Boer) Date: Thu, 4 Jan 2018 14:09:28 +0200 Subject: [Bolincentret-at-su.se] Female mentors please!? Message-ID: <9b78a895-9ac1-c20f-bc44-c0e6a5d66724@geo.su.se> Hi all, We've had several late requests for mentors in the Bolin Mentoring program and we are especially in need of female mentors. If you are female and about 4 years past Phd, then please consider signing up as a mentor. It is not a very time-consuming service and typically takes 1 monthly lunch or less. You can make a big difference in some person's career. Below are some quotes from mentees from previous rounds. If you can mentor in 2018, please send me a quick reply with you position and experience (years past phd) and your department. Many thanks, Agatha and Malin "The program has been incredibly helpful. At the time I reached out I was the middle of my PhD, I had not much supervisor time and had serious concerns about getting delayed. The mentorship has helped to keep focused and get back on track. " "Personally the program was very helpful to me. One important point for me is that I have three male supervisors, so having a female as a mentor is extra important. Want I like the most in the program is the freedom to choose the informal contact, since in the academic world everything is already so formal." "I have found it useful to openly discuss my research problems, interactions with other researchers, the nature of criticism and feedback in science, and other issues. It’s also great to get a perspective of someone who is not connected to my project, but is very experienced and knowledgable about this kind of work. I wish I had sought out something like this program when I was a PhD student. I think that would have helped me back then." -- Associate professor in physical paleoceanography Department of Geological Sciences and Bolin Center for Climate Research Stockholm University -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Sign up by replying to this email, by January 21 at the latest The aim of the workshop is to discuss the future research activities within RA8. Issues that we want to bring up include: What research are we currently involved in? How can this research be further developed by the new projects just, or soon to be, started? How can our research benefit from collaborations, within RA8 as well as with other partners? Are any key areas missing from the research that one would expect to be carried out within the field of "Biodiversity and climate"? What are the best strategies to build research environments that can attract external funding and be maintained over longer time? Which activities within RA8 are best suited to serve these purposes? The meeting will consist of three main parts: inspirational presentations by two invited external speakers, presentations of ongoing research by members of RA8 with plenty of time for feedback, and discussions (partly in groups). The work-shop is planned to run from lunch 6 February to lunch 7 February. It will be held at the research station Tovetorp, situated approximately 100 km south of Stockholm. Welcome! The research school will focus on Climate and the Environment as examples of research level applications of the upper secondary school disciplines: Natural Science and Geography. Research students The research students are teachers at upper secondary schools. They will undertake research training at 50% of fulltime for a period of 4 years (2018 - 2022). The goal is a licentiate degree. Cascade mentoring The research school will operate a cascade mentoring scheme whereby university lecturers supervise school teachers who, in turn, supervise upper secondary school students. This will be achieved with research projects designed so as to involve active participation of school students. Their participation can take the form of e.g. upper secondary school final year diploma projects (gymnasiearbete) or natural science specialization (naturvetenskaplig specialisering) projects. Research projects We invite members of the Bolin Centre and LUCCI to propose research projects which meet the following criteria: · The research project should focus on climate or environment. · The project should be feasible for an upper secondary school teacher to complete working 50% for 4 years. · The research project should be designed so as to lead to publication of at least one paper in a peer review scientific journal. · The research project should involve active participation of school students e.g. in the form of upper secondary school final year diploma projects or natural science specialization projects. · The research project should be supervised by one or more scientists, one of whom should be (1) a member of either the Bolin Centre or LUCCI, (2) employed throughout the period 2018 - 2022, and (3) docent competent. Research projects which use data produced by ICOS-Sweden will be prioritized. Research funding Projects funds will be decided on based on actual needs, but as a general guideline, research funding will be approximately SEK 200 000 with an additional SEK 125 000 to cover costs related to cascade mentoring. Also each project supervisor team will be granted equivalent of a 5% buyout for the 4-year period. How to respond to this call Please respond immediately with an expression of interest and thereafter submit a 2-page proposal no later than January 31 to Alasdair Skelton (alasdair.skelton at geo.su.se) (members of the Bolin Centre) or Lena Ström (lena.strom at nateko.lu.se) (members of LUCCI). The speaker will be Camille Li, from Bergen University. See flyer attached, and details below. We will be going for dinner with Camille after the seminar, so please let me know this week if you would like to join. Camille will be visiting from 5-7 February. Please get in touch if you would like to meet up with her while she is here. Kind Regards, David Title: The role of subpolar atmosphere-ice-ocean interactions in Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles Abstract Sea ice has long been thought to play an important role in D-O cycles because of its strong influence on regional temperature and its ability to grow and melt rapidly in response to relatively weak forcings. One recent idea based on modelling experiments is that D-O-related sea ice displacements are part of an unforced, coupled oscillation of the North Atlantic atmosphere-ice-ocean system. Starting from an overview of this system in today's climate, we investigate how glacial climate conditions might alter its functioning to allow D-O cycles to occur based on evidence from a hierarchy of dynamical models. Of specific interest are changes in the subpolar gyre region due to atmospheric forcing. Broader consequences for the Atlantic thermohaline circulation and Arctic-Atlantic climate signals will be discussed. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Atmospheric wind observations are required for initiating weather forecast models and for predicting and monitoring long term climate change. Improved knowledge of the global wind field is widely recognised as fundamental to advancing the understanding and prediction of weather and climate. In particular over tropical areas there is a need for better wind data leading to improved medium range (3-10 days) weather forecasts over the whole globe. Best wishes Nina Thursday 15 February 2018, 13.30-17.00 The Beijer Hall, The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences Lilla Frescativägen 4A, Stockholm *Scenarios for a warmer Arctic* Climate change has dramatic impacts in the Arctic, with greater temperature increases compared to the Earth as a whole and rapidly melting summer sea ice. These changes are expected to substantially influence the Arctic environment as well as socio-economic activities. In this symposium we will present and discuss new research concerning the direct results of global warming such as future sea ice conditions, impacts on live marine resources and on the provision of ecosystem services. Furthermore, we will discuss what impacts these changes have on fishing, shipping, aquaculture and other economic activities and how they in turn affect the environment and the lives of people in local communities. The presentations are based on results from the transdisciplinary EU-project Arctic Climate Change Economy and Society (ACCESS), recently published in a special issue of the journal Ambio. Within ACCESS, a framework to support management in the region was also developed, which takes into account complex interactions between society and nature, possible abrubt change and considerable uncertainty. /The symposium is free of charge and open to the public but registration / /is required.
