He will present on: Interhemispheric thermal asymmetry across the Eocene-Oligocene Transition: Implications for the onset of modern-like AMOC We will go out for dinner on the Monday following the talk. Please let me know by Monday (23th April) if you’d like to join. Zhonghui will be visiting from 7-9 May (Monday to Wednesday). Please contact me if you’d like to chat with him while he’s here. Regards, David Abstract The Eocene-Oligocene Transition (EOT) around 33.7 million years ago (Ma) is arguably one of the most puzzling climate events during the Cenozoic. The EOT is marked by substantial climatic and oceanic reorganizations as demonstrated in numerous studies, yet the chain of processes or associated driving mechanisms remain controversial. Recent studies have focused on the early Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) development and a potential role it played for the EOT. Here we present some new results that are generated from IODP Expedition 342 Sites U1404 and 1411. A long time-series sea surface temperature (SST) record from U1404, from 43 Ma to 18 Ma, demonstrates a much warmer climate in the mid-latitude North Atlantic than today and an overall pattern of change similar to the global benthic d18O record. However, an important anomaly is observed across the EOT, where we see no substantial cooling associated with the earliest Oligocene glacial maximum (EOGM), in contrast to published data from the mid- to high latitudes of the southern hemisphere. The distinct interhemispheric thermal asymmetry documented may signal the onset of strong AMOC. Our preliminary work from Site U1411 shows pCO2 decline since ~34 Ma, perhaps in two steps as shown in benthic d18O (Coxall et al., 2005, Nature) but not resembling SST changes in the mid-latitude North Atlantic across the EOT. Based on our present data, the role of early AMOC development, i.e. during the Late Eocene, for the EOT remains uncertain. We surmise that pCO2 drawdown, as previously proposed, might be the ultimate cause for the EOT, while the transient nature of interhemispheric thermal asymmetry since the EOGM may have resulted from combined effects of Antarctic glaciation and Southern Ocean gateway opening. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from lakes, reservoirs and running water have recently been identified as major components of the land GHG exchange. Now a global study shows that changes in the life cycles between plants and animals that depend on each other is also moving faster.- In order to get a better picture of how changes in the environment such as a warmer climate affect the timing between species, we need to understand what environmental factors influence the species’ seasonal development and how this differs between species, says Johan Ehrlén, researcher at the Bolin Centre and professor at the Department of Ecology and Plant Sciences, one of the authors of the study. The Montreal Protocol, enacted to prevent ozone depletion from human activity, halted declines in column-integrated ozone in the 1990s; the upper stratosphere is recovering, but lower stratospheric trends are unknown. To accurately estimate decadal trends in stratospheric ozone requires combining observations from multiple instruments. However, trends between composites disagree due to data-artefacts that remain after merging data together. We developed a new methodology to account for the artefacts using only the data itself in addition to prior knowledge about ozone variability and known problems during instrument operation. Furthermore, we use dynamical linear modelling (DLM), a Bayesian multiple linear regression, to estimate robust trends. As a result of building confidence in the data, we find clear evidence that lower stratospheric ozone continues to decline, preventing total ozone recovery. This result contradicts expectations and, with no clear understanding of why this trend has emerged, implies that the problem of ozone depletion is not yet fully resolved. The decline may have an impact future estimates of ozone layer recovery and future surface levels of ultraviolet radiation. Welcome! Learning from the past: A slowdown of the Atlantic overturning system may cause hot European summers Record-breaking cold North Atlantic Ocean temperatures in recent years reflect a notable slowdown of the Atlantic overturning system and have been linked to major European heat waves. Results from new high-resolution climate simulations for the late-glacial confirm that a strong cooling of the North Atlantic Ocean caused unusually warm European summers ~12,000 years ago. As today, the key mechanism behind this "cold-ocean-warm-summer" feedback is intensified atmospheric blocking by persistent high-pressure centers over Europe. Name Casimir de Lavergne School of Mathematics and Statistics, UNSW, Australia Title An improved parameterization of tidal mixing Abstract Generated by tidal currents over sloping topography, internal tides are a prominent type of internal waves whose breaking feeds much of the observed small-scale turbulence in the ocean interior. In this talk, I will present a mixing scheme which accounts for the local and remote breaking of internal tides and which obviates the need for a fixed background diffusivity. The scheme uses four static 2D maps of internal tide dissipation, each associated with a breaking process and a corresponding vertical structure. In spite of the substantial limitations attached to the estimated dissipation maps, favourable comparison with some fine- and micro-structure observations and successful implementation in NEMO suggest that the scheme has potential for improving understanding and modelling of ocean mixing. Please register by replying to sebastian.rast at mpimet.mpg.de by filling out the form at the end of the email. Some information on the ICON model: http://www.mpimet.mpg.de/en/science/models/icon-esm/ To give you a first impression on some model results from ICON, see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ji4nno-fsvw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhwHuZR2uKo Best regards, Frederik Researcher, Paleoclimate Modeling and Statistics Stockholm University Bolin Center for Climate Research Department of Geological Sciences Svante Arrhenius väg 8 C 106 91 Stockholm Phone +46 (0) 8 16 47 41 http://people.geo.su.se/frederik/ Course description: ICON contains a general circulation model of the atmosphere and is based on a grid that is derived from the icosahedron. The triangles of the icosahedron are projected onto the surface of the sphere and subdivided further by great circles. This grid is an alternative to the well known longitude-latitude grids. The interesting aspect is that the icosahedral grid does not contain "singular points" such as the poles and that the grid points have similar distances of each other everywhere on the globe. This full-day course lasts for one week (Monday to Saturday) and offers an introduction to the usage of the ICON model in its atmosphere version including a physics package that was developed for climate science. We will not discuss the underlying physics but we will emphasize the technical aspects, how simulations can be performed with this model and how the code can be modified according to individual needs. The most important data structures inside the model will be discussed and the implementation of a submodel will be demonstrated with the example of a tracer emitted into the atmosphere. The following topics will be discussed in some detail: -Simple simulation of the general circulation of the atmosphere (boundary conditions, initial conditions, parameters, namelist variables, scripts) -first evaluations of the results and assessment of the quality of the simulation -general overview of program structure -general overview of important data structures inside the code -implementation of additional submodels, modifications of the existing code The course consists of lectures (20 hours) and practical exercises on the computer (18 hours). It is meant for persons who would like to work with ICON in their master thesis (in exceptional cases also bachelor thesis), PhD thesis, or in research, and who would like to gain some insight into the technical aspects of the code. The course will be taught in English. Information for the students of Uni Hamburg: Please, select the weeks on the "Terminplaner", even if you already registered via STINE. There will be the possibility to get credit points. People from outside get a certificate, a graded certificate is also possible. In that case, an exam will take place on Saturday. Registration form: The ICON course 2018 will take place at the Hamburg University from July 30 until August 4 (included). Please, register (binding) until June 30 by filling in the following questions and sending them back to me: sebastian.rast at mpimet.mpg.de Full name (as it will appear on badge): Knowledge of UNIX: beginner: advanced: expert: Knowledge of FORTRAN90: beginner: advanced: expert: There will be lunch together on Monday with some finger food.
