But there are still a few people listed in the date-selection Doodle https://doodle.com/poll/t345f3dpqz69np82 who have not yet emailed me, please do email me now, so I can make a separate email list for the event. [cid:image002.jpg at 01D472C0.976C9530] And there might be a few more who would like to join? Please sign up before November 9th: https://doodle.com/poll/t345f3dpqz69np82 or just show up on the 16th. I think we will do the "Concerned Climate Scientists Support Greta" - event on the 16th of November, 10.00-13.00. We can meet at Mynttorget at 10.00 (and not all of us have to be there all the time, I will inform what time the politicians will come, probably at lunch time). Please make and bring some little posters with our message for the politicians, which we can photograph with us for social media. Is it ok with everyone that I invite politicians for the 16th November now (on Monday)? Suggestions were Per Bolund and Annie Lööf, do you have any more suggestions for politicians? Please email me (Maria) if you want to help in organizing, like writing the invitation email to the politicians? Regards, Maria Johansson Malie Lessard-Therrien Ditte Marie Christiansen From: Maria Johansson Sent: den 25 oktober 2018 14:58 To: 'bolincentret-at-su.se at lists.su.se' Subject: Clarification - Fridays with Greta event at Mynttorget Dear Bolin Center members again, A clarification: Our previous invitation to join the Fridays with Greta challenge (see below) was unclear on the point that we have support from the Bolin Center to advertise on the email list. But the Bolin Center cannot officially participate, since it´s part of SU, and SU, as a government institution, is not allowed to do anything that might be perceived as political (core values at SU). Therefore we will join this privately, and call ourselves "Climate researchers" and not mention the Bolin Center when inviting politicians and communicating with Greta and the public about the event. We hope that this information of the inofficial support from the Bolin Center, and how we handle this, encourages more members to join Greta with us. We believe that as private persons, but also as researchers with substantial knowledge of the effects of climate change, we can ask politicians to comply with the Paris agreement, and doing so in a nonpartisan manner. Here is Greta´s inspiring reply to people telling her to study hard to become a climate scientist instead: https://www.facebook.com/rentzhog/videos/10155712816640736/%20 Can someone make use of this Greta quote to make a nice slogan for us? Please email Maria Johansson if you want to help out a little in organizing this (it's not much work). Also, please suggest suitable politicians to invite, and who to challenge next. It seems like most of us can join on the 16th of November. Please sign up as soon as possible, preferably before November 2nd. IMPORTANT! Everyone who signs up in the date-selection Doodle https://doodle.com/poll/t345f3dpqz69np82 also need to email Maria.U.Johansson at su.se so I can make a separate email list for the event. In the light of recent political elections, and the new IPCC report, we would like to propose to the Bolin Centre members to express our concerns about climate change and request the new government coalition to take concrete actions to fulfil Sweden's commitment to the Paris agreement. We suggest to join Greta Thunberg (https://www.newyorker.com/news/our-columnists/the-fifteen-year-old-climate-activist-who-is-demanding-a-new-kind-of-politics) in her demonstration to request political action against climate change at Mynttorget in front of the government building in Stockholm. Concerned citizens of all ages are showing their support and demands for real political measures for the climate in many cities and countries all over the world. At present, an official challenge has been launched between organisations, institutions and companies to show their support by joining Greta, se Swedish ad below or: http://afrikagrupperna.se/aktuellt-nyheter/ni-ar-utmanade-backa-greta/. We propose to show our support as climate researchers by joining Greta at Mynttorget one Friday morning soon, invite some politicians and communicate that we are there and why. We could also afterwards forward the challenge by inviting e.g. Stockholm Resilience Centre to show their support in turn. Please email me, Maria Johansson if you would like to help in organizing this. And if you just want to join, please mark all possible Fridays in October/November that you possibly could join at Mynttorget between 10-13 (not all of us have to be present the whole time) in this Doodle https://doodle.com/poll/t345f3dpqz69np82 , then we select the date when most of us are able to come. You can also select which days are really bad options, if they clash with something many of us will go to. I suggest we go there Friday the 16th of November, just before the Bolin Days. But the Friday after, the 23rd might also be a good date? The 18th International Swiss Climate Summer School focuses on the theme «Carbon and climate in the Paris world: getting out of the fossil fuel carbon budget crunch». It is motivated by the current paradoxical situation wherein the internationally recognized warming targets of 2°C or even 1.5°C imply a tightly limited fossil fuel emission budget for the entire 21st century, while the trends in the fossil fuel emissions suggest that this budget is consumed within the next one to three decades. With conventional mitigation and adaptation options not sufficiently exploited, humankind may need to deploy unconventional methods to meet its climate target. In this highly interdisciplinary summer school, we will learn about and discuss · the nature, size, and controlling processes of this carbon budget, · the drivers behind past and future fossil fuel emissions, · the climatic consequences of the Paris agreement, · the options available to us to create negative emissions, and · the socio-economic drivers that can either accelerate or decelerate these developments. This summer school addresses Early Stage Researchers from the climate, engineering, social and economic sciences. In addition to keynote lectures from internationally renowned experts and extensive time for discussions and poster sessions, two half days will be spent in smaller groups working jointly on concrete case studies, involving practitioners. The theme of the summer school is very timely, as the role and potential of negative emissions is a rapidly emerging topic for science, technology, and policymaking alike, and has also led to several initiatives around the world. All Summer School participants are expected to present a poster of their research. Guido will be also around during the Bolin Days. Abstract Atmosphere and ocean interaction with ice sheets in the climate system occurs on several spatial and temporal scales. Glacial climate variability is thought to be influenced by external forcing and internal feedbacks including continental ice sheet size. In this talk, I will discuss some of the mechanisms that underlie the dynamics of the millennial timescale Dansgaard-Oeschger (D-O) oscillation and argue that it is an internal relaxation oscillation of the climate system that can be perturbed by ice sheet forcing. Some queries have started to come in so here just a quick heads up about how the transition to the new round for 2018/2019 will occur. -On Wednesday morning at the Bolin Days, I will give a short presentation about the program; the characteristics of the program, the success of the program, and the increased need for mentors. -On Wednesday we will also have a booth during coffee and lunch breaks - this is to give those who have some questions a chance to ask us details about the program. -Shortly after the Bolin Days, we will send out an email to the Bolin email list with information on how to sign up as mentee or mentor. -We will pair mentors and mentees and let everyone know within about two weeks who their mentors and mentees are for 2018/2019. See you tomorrow! Agatha de Boer and Malin Kylander _For interest: Characteristics of the program._ *Annual: *The program runs annually from the Bolin Days. After that pairs may wish to continue formally, informally, sign up for new pairs, or leave the program. *Cross-departmental: *The mentees are signed up with mentors in other departments (or instititutes) to provide more objectivity and avoid conflict of interest. T*argeted pairing:* The mentees who sign up are able to mention mentor preferences that are important to them for example a specific gender, language requirement, seniority, or international experience. *Mentee-driven: *The mentees make the first contact and decide the frequency and format of the meetings. This is because the needs of every mentee are individual and a single format will not be optimal for all. *Confidential: *We never mention who signs up unless permission is given such as for marketing. Mentee-mentor interactions are also strictly confidential. *Voluntary:* All mentees and mentors volunteer. This means the program is always only as big at the need it fulfils. -- Associate professor in physical paleoceanography Department of Geological Sciences and Bolin Center for Climate Research Stockholm University -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Wieslaw Maslowski, Department of Oceanography, Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, USA Dynamical downscaling using the Regional Arctic System Model to advance predictive understanding of the Arctic climate system Abstract We have developed and used the Regional Arctic System Model (RASM) for dynamical downscaling of global atmospheric reanalyses and future projections. RASM is a fully coupled limited-domain ice-ocean-atmosphere-land model developed to better understand the linkages and coupling channels within the Arctic System at a process scale and to improve prediction of its change at a spectrum of timescales. Its domain is pan-Arctic, with the atmosphere and land components configured on a 50-km or 25-km grid. The ocean and sea ice components are configured on rotated sphere meshes with four configuration options: 1/12o (~9.3km) or 1/48o (~2.4km) in the horizontal space and with 45 or 60 vertical layers. We use RASM to investigate critical processes controlling the Arctic sea ice thickness distribution, its oceanic and atmospheric forcing and air-sea interactions under a diminishing sea ice cover. Our focus and the long-term objectives are to improve the representation of feedbacks and to quantify some of the key uncertainties of the Arctic surface energy budget, to improve model predictive skill and advance predictability of Arctic climate change at time scales from synoptic to decadal. In this talk, I'll present several examples of key process and feedbacks, which improve model simulation of the past and present. I'll also discuss progress with, challenges of and observational needs for advanced arctic climate prediction at sub-seasonal to intra-annual time scales. Please sign up though replying to this email with the information requested  below before Tuesday 4 December . *Signing up as mentor, please provide:* If you signed up before, just reply to this email to indicate availability again. If this is your first time, please provide your name, institute/department, field of study, position and some indication of experience (e.g., years since phd if you are a postdoc). We ideally have a mentor with at least 5 years more experience than the mentee. *Special call for mentors: *The success of the program depends on sufficient availability of mentors. The meetings are often about 3-8 lunches per year which is not a huge burden. It is a service to the community which can be stated on your CV. It is also very rewarding. So please do consider to sign up and pay forward for all the help and mentoring you have received yourself in your career. *Signing up as mentee, please provide: * Name, department, field of study and career stage. If a postdoc or more advanced, please state years since Phd. Please also say whether you have any preference for mentors regarding seniority (experience), gender, language, or any other considerations. Please mention if some of your preferences are less important than others in case it is difficult to fulfill all preferences. That is the most important information. For those further interested, please see main characteristics of the program below and more specific information below for mentees and mentors. Best regards, Agatha & Malin *Main characteristics of the program: * * _Purpose:_ To provide career guidance to junior scientists in the Bolin Centre and participating departments (as opposed to scientific support). * _Voluntary:_ All mentees and mentors volunteer. This means the program is always only as big at the need it fulfills. * _Confidential:_ We never mention who signs up unless permission is given such as for marketing. Mentee-mentor interactions are also strictly confidential. * _Cross-departmental_: The mentees are signed up with mentors in other departments to provide more objectivity and avoid conflict of interest. * _Mentee-driven_: The mentees make the first contact and decide the frequency and format of the meetings. This is because the needs of every mentee are individual and a single format will not be optimal for all. * _Annual_: The program runs annually from the Bolin Days. After that pairs may wish to continue formally, informally, sign up for new pairs, or leave the program. *More information for mentees:* You will receive and email from me in the next 2-3 weeks with information about your mentor. It is your responsibility to contact your mentor to set up a first meeting. At the first meeting you will need to discuss your preferred meeting frequency which can range from three times a year to monthly. You also need to think about whether you prefer an informal or more structured meeting setup. An informal meeting could start with a simple "how are things going?" and proceed from there. In a more structure meeting you could make up a short personal development program for the next two years which may include goals such as thesis writing, courses, conference attendance, publications, career development, personal goals, etc. Then you can discuss at each meeting how progress towards those goals are proceeding and discuss how to overcome the challenges if you missed your goals. It is up to the mentee to choose which setup they prefer since the linking program is there to serve the needs of the mentee. Of course you can choose something in between these choices or change from one to the other at any point. *More information for mentors:* The program is mentee-driven and the mentee will contact you to set up a first meeting. It is natural for the mentee to leave it up to the mentor, as the senior, to lead the meetings. The mentor can therefore at the first meeting determine what the mentee's main motivation for mentorship is and which frequency and format they prefer and how the next meeting will be set up. Also, please mention that the interaction is completely confidential and both should commit to that pledge to ensure trust. From previous years' mentor feedback it came to light that it is difficult for mentors to determine whether they were useful while their mentees expressed appreciation for the interaction. So even if it doesn't always feel that you are useful, you probably are! *Selected feedback from previous rounds of the Linking Program:* *From mentees:* It was extremely useful. I had 4-5 meetings with my mentor that were very helpful and a great way to share ideas Great to get unbiased input on different issues Able to get advice on a job application which was very useful to improve both my CV and cover letter It was especially usefully to get to talk with a female mentor about what it is like being a woman in science, since not many of the people I usually work with can give any good insight when it comes to this aspect. Great that consideration has gone into the matching of mentee and mentor as this worked very well. " It was good to talk with someone who is not directly involved in my scientific career. I like that there was a formal way to find a mentor and one doesn't have to find oneself. It could be especially important for Phd students who don't get along well with their supervisors It provides connections with researchers in neighboring fields. It has been really great. My mentor was the perfect person to speak to regarding the academic process. I am sure my mentor and I will be in contact beyond the program and the introduction was invaluable. It is also a good opportunity to meet and learn about other departments and nearby disciplines. It was good to have someone experienced outside the department to get some feedback from. *From mentors* I acted as an extra listening ear able to give some advice Great initiative. I enjoyed the meetings and learned a lot myself. Good to hear how SU and PhD education is working from a different perspective as ones own. In general it was fun to meet and see that there are good working groups out there across campus. The program is a really good idea. I very much enjoyed the meetings and believe we will continue them regardless of the program -- Associate professor in physical paleoceanography Department of Geological Sciences and Bolin Center for Climate Research Stockholm University -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
