From qiong.zhang at natgeo.su.se Wed Jun 5 09:11:38 2019 From: qiong.zhang at natgeo.su.se (Qiong Zhang) Date: Wed, 5 Jun 2019 07:11:38 +0000 Subject: [Bolincentret-at-su.se] RA5 seminar today at 13:00 by Zhengyao Lu Message-ID: Dear colleagues, You are welcome to the last RA5 seminar during this spring term. 05 June, 13.00-13.45, Ahlmannsalen, Zhengyao Lu, Lund University Examining El Niño in the past: towards a data-model consensus What is about: The Earth has seen El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO)—the leading mode of interannual climate variability—for at least millennia and likely over millions of years. I will talk about two important methods to study past ENSO variations: paleoclimate proxy data (from traditional sediment records to the latest high-resolution oxygen isotope records) and model simulations (including earlier intermediate models to the latest isotope-enabled coupled models). ENSO response to external climatic forcings such as orbital, ice-sheet, greenhouse gas and volcanic forcings are often considered. Due to the intrinsic irregularity of ENSO and its complicated relationship with other climate phenomena, reconstructions and model simulations of ENSO variability are often subject to inherent difficulties in interpretations and biases. Resolving these challenges through new data syntheses, new statistical methods, more complex climate model simulations as well as direct model-data comparisons can potentially better constrain uncertainty regarding ENSO’s response to future global warming. All are welcome! Qiong -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... New research at the Bolin Centre Approach to identify extreme weather events The Eastern Mediterranean region is characterized by high-impact weather events, such as heavy snowfall and flooding. Images of snowfall in Jerusalem have been repeatedly featured by international news outlets. This new study (https://advances.sciencemag.org/content/5/6/eaau0936) show that events leading to heavy precipitation in the region are intrinsically difficult to forecast, and propose an approach to quantify this “forecasting difficulty”.
