The speaker is selected among prominent scientists within climate research by the Faculty of Science. Maureen E. Raymo will give this years lecture. She is a renowned scientist who has been a pioneer in the study of ice ages and sea level in Earth’s history. Her work has shaped our understanding of Earth’s natural climate variability and her landmark papers have influenced a generation of scientists. In 2014, Professor Raymo, a fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, the Explorers Club, and the American Geophysical Union, became the first woman to be awarded the Wollaston Medal, the Geological Society of London’s most senior medal and highest accolade. Professor Raymo will give both a science seminar and the Bert Bolin Climate Lecture. Fika will be served. Welcome! Bert Bolin Climate Lecture Titel: Climate, CO2 and Sea Level: Past, Present and Future Time and place: November 19 at 14:00 -15:00, Aula Magna, Stockholms universitet The Earth is warming up. The on-going pollution of our atmosphere with an invisible odourless gas called carbon dioxide, is trapping heat at the Earth’s surface and causing temperatures to rise on land and in the ocean. The polar regions are warming fastest of all and the melting ice sheets are causing sea levels to rise around the globe. In this talk, Professor Raymo will review evidence for climate change, natural and anthropogenic, and explore how ice sheets and sea level changed in the past. How fast climate changes in the future will depend on our collective actions as individuals, families, communities, and governments. Bert Bolin Climate Science Seminar Title: Sea Level during Past Warm Periods: Eemian to Pliocene? Time and place: November 19 at 10:00 -11:00, Nordenskiöld Hall Geoscience buildning, Stockholms universitet The amount of polar ice melt during past warm periods can guide our understanding and prediction of future sea level rise. For instance, global climate during the mid-Pliocene warm period appears to have been ~2-3°C warmer than today with atmospheric CO2 values between 350-450 ppm. Yet despite decades of study, the maximum sea level rise during this time period remains uncertain with estimates ranging from 5 to >35 meters above present. Why such variability? Researchers have focused study of past sea level on stable passive margins, believing these regions would preserve sea level indicators with minimal post-depositional movement. However, we have shown that glacial isostatic adjustment can significantly influence the elevation of ancient shorelines far from polar regions and derived a methodology for correcting Pliocene sea level observations for time-varying deformation of the solid Earth caused by ice sheet loading. We have also shown that dynamic topography (elevation changes caused by the force exerted on the lower crust by the buoyant upper mantle) can also cause tens of meters of surface uplift, in areas far from any active tectonic plate boundary, on timescales as short as a few million years. Using the methodologies we developed during the study of Pliocene shorelines, we recently assessed published sea level rise estimates for the most recent interglacial, the Eemian. We estimate maximum sea level during the last interglacial was probably lower than the value of 6-9 m currently cited, implying greater stability of the polar ice sheets in the face of a 1-2°C global warming. Pairs will soon be made for 2020. You can sign-up as a mentor or a mentee until December 6th, 2019 here: https://www.geo.su.se/mentor About the Program: We work to pair mentees with mentors based on a wish list (e.g., discipline, language, gender, career stage, etc) supplied by each mentee. The aim is to provide career guidance to junior scientists in the Bolin Centre and participating departments (as opposed to scientific support). In the context of this program a junior researcher is anyone from Phd level upwards. We ideally have mentors with at least 5 years more experience than the mentee. The program is: Voluntary: All mentees and mentors volunteer. This means the program is always only as big as the need it fulfills. Confidential: We never mention who signs up unless permission is given such as for marketing. Mentee-mentor interactions are also strictly confidential. Cross-departmental: The mentees are signed up with mentors in other departments to provide more objectivity and avoid conflicts of interest. Mentee-driven: The mentees make the first contact and decide the frequency and format of the meetings. This is because the needs of every mentee are individual and a single format will not be optimal for all. Annual: The program runs annually from the Bolin Days each year. After that pairs may wish to continue formally, informally, sign up for new pairs, or leave the program. What happens for mentees once they have signed up? You will receive an email in the next 2-3 weeks with information about your mentor. It is your responsibility to contact your mentor to set up a first meeting. At the first meeting you will need to discuss your preferred meeting frequency which can range from three times a year to monthly. You also need to think about whether you prefer an informal or more structured meeting setup. An informal meeting could start with a simple "how are things going?" and proceed from there. In a more structured meeting you could make up a short personal development program for the next two years which may include goals such as thesis writing, courses, conference attendance, publications, career development, personal goals, etc. You can then discuss at each meeting how progress towards those goals is proceeding and how to overcome the challenges if you missed your goals. It is up to the mentee to choose which setup they prefer since the linking program is there to serve the needs of the mentee. Of course you can choose something in between these choices or change from one to the other at any point. What happens for mentors once they have signed up? The program is mentee-driven and the mentee will contact you to set up a first meeting. It is natural for the mentee to leave it up to the mentor, as the more senior, to lead the meetings. The mentor can therefore at the first meeting determine what the mentee's main motivation for mentorship is and which frequency and format they prefer and how the next meeting will be set up. Also, please mention that the interaction is completely confidential and both should commit to that pledge to ensure trust. From previous years' mentor feedback it came to light that it is difficult for mentors to determine whether they were useful while their mentees expressed appreciation for the interaction. So even if it doesn't always feel that you are useful, you probably are! More details about mentorship and the program are found here (or you can read below): https://bolin.su.se/index.php/the-bolin-centre-mentoring-system Best regards, Agatha & Malin Selected feedback from previous rounds of the Linking Program From mentees: It was extremely useful. I had 4-5 meetings with my mentor that were very helpful and a great way to share ideas. Great to get unbiased input on different issues. Able to get advice on a job application which was very useful to improve both my CV and cover letter. It was especially usefully to get to talk with a female mentor about what it is like being a woman in science, since not many of the people I usually work with can give any good insight when it comes to this aspect. Great that consideration has gone into the matching of mentee and mentor as this worked very well. It was good to talk with someone who is not directly involved in my scientific career. I like that there was a formal way to find a mentor and one doesn't have to find oneself. It could be especially important for Phd students who don't get along well with their supervisors. It provides connections with researchers in neighboring fields. It has been really great. My mentor was the perfect person to speak to regarding the academic process. I am sure my mentor and I will be in contact beyond the program and the introduction was invaluable. It is also a good opportunity to meet and learn about other departments and nearby disciplines. It was good to have someone experienced outside the department to get some feedback from. From mentors I acted as an extra listening ear able to give some advice. Great initiative. I enjoyed the meetings and learned a lot myself. Good to hear how SU and PhD education is working from a different perspective as ones own. In general it was fun to meet and see that there are good working groups out there across campus. The program is a really good idea. I very much enjoyed the meetings and believe we will continue them regardless of the program. ________________________________________ Dr. Malin Kylander Docent, Senior Lecturer in Chemical Sedimentology Department of Geological Sciences and the Bolin Centre for Climate Research Stockholm University SE-10691 Stockholm Sweden On the web: https://www.su.se/english/profiles/mkyla-1.185105 Mob: +46 (0) 707521821 e-mail: malin.kylander at geo.su.se -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... You can come by our office (Geohuset, 3 floor, R338) or download it as a PDF-file (https://bolin.su.se/index.php/news/936-bolin-centre-annual-report-2018) . Thank you to everyone who made this possible. Welcome to the Bolin Centre Seminar Series! The host this time is Research Area 7: Landscape Processes and Climate (https://bolin.su.se/index.php/ra7-landscape-processes-and-climate) Seminar title: Managing biodiversity and ecosystem services in a changing world (https://bolin.su.se/index.php/bolin-seminars-5/934-dec-3-ra7-seminar-with-henrik-smith) Biodiversity loss is affected by the interacting effects of climate and land-use change. Birds and insects in Sweden and Europe has already reacted to changes in temperature during the past decades. These effects may be complex, as they affect not only individual species, but interacting communities, with the potential for ‘surprising’ results. The effects of climate change are also indirect through consequences of climate mitigation and adaptation strategies. Using space-for-time substitution approaches, I demonstrate potential indirect consequences of climate change for birds and insects. Mainstreaming biodiversity in to management of anthropogenic landscapes is a potential way to increase the resilience of ecosystems. I will present and discuss the potential, as well as the weaknesses, of such an approach to future proof landscape in times of global change. Speaker: Professor Henrik Smith, Lund UniversityTime & place: December 3 at 14h00, Högbom Hall, Geoscience Building Climate models compared to geological evidence An international team of environmental scientists and climatologists tested climate models using geological evidence from earlier times (https://www.natgeo.su.se/english/research/resarch-news/climate-models-compared-to-geological-evidence-1.463716) . By studying the geological past we can learn important lessons about the future of our climate. Qiong Zhang, from Department of Physical Geography was involved in the research. New climate service at SMHI: The Climate Adaptation Game The Climate Adaptation Game (http://www.smhi.se/en/news-archive/new-climate-service-the-climate-adaptation-game-1.154068) is now available to play for free at SMHI’s webpage. The game aims to develop better understanding for the effects of climate change, and how to meet the challenges it brings. The game can be used in education for sustainable development, or in various contexts within climate change adaptation.
