The seminar will be live streamed here: https://stockholmuniversity.zoom.us/j/845471560 Fika will be served, welcome! A key outstanding research question limiting predictions of future climate change is how much the Earth’s climate will warm for a given increase in CO2 concentrations (pCO2) – the so-called climate sensitivity. The expected warming for a doubling of pCO2 is highly under-constrained by current models: between 1.5 ºC and 5 ºC. Climate models have not managed to reduce this range after decades of research and now scientists are turning to past observations for help, by integrating climate modelling with geological proxy records of past greenhouse global warming. One such palaeo-proxy is the stomtal proxy method for pCO2 reconstruction, which relies on the empirically established inverse relationship between the density of stomata on plant leaves and pCO2. This proxy has proven increasingly important to the climate change research community, but there are still uncertainties regarding the exact way to calibrate stomatal densities to palaeo-pCO2, and which additional environmental factors may have influenced these densities during the fossil plants’ lifetime. This talk gives an overview of the stomatal proxy method and addresses some of the caveats remaining, as well as recent and ongoing progress in the field – specifically ongoing research using the ‘living fossil’ Ginkgo biloba. You can have a two-hour discussion aiming only at some advice, or start a collaboration project, or anything in between. We have general statistical competence and experience, and some particular experience from various projects within the Bolin centre. Personally, I got in this way involved in a relatively big project in palaeo-climatology initiated by Anders Moberg, which resulted in several joint articles in Climate of the Past (and a PhD thesis in mathematical statistics, as well). Like never before, visual information is increasing exposure and widening outreach to new audiences. With growing demands from Journals (TOC arts, visual abstracts, scientific figures), conferences (posters, presentation) and competitive grants submissions, the science world is not spared. It is therefore important to get figures and images right for the intended audience, even more so when visualizing scientific data and conveying complex concepts. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published three Special Reports over the past year, in which it featured a new approach to figure design. Using key messages and visuals from these reports as an example of integrating visual communication, this seminar aims to give scientists an overview of information design and cognitive concepts, as well as provide practical tips for creating their own engaging figures. Time & place: November 4, 14h00, DeGeersalen, Geoscience BuildingSpeaker: Melissa Gomis, environmental scientist, holds a PhD from Stockholm University for which she investigated the human exposure to Perfluorinated substances. She now works as Graphics and Communications Officer for the IPCC WGI TSU, based at the Universite Paris-Saclay. Best wishes, we are looking forward to seeing you at the Bolin Days! Nina and Alasdair *Bolin Days 2019 - Sessions* *Session A: Carbon sources and sinks.*Session organizers: Volker Brüchert and Anne Soerensen Carbon compounds play a crucial role in all parts of the Earth system, being closely connected to the hydrological cycle, Earth’s radiative balance, or ecosystem health. This session will bring together different perspectives on the sources and sinks of carbon in different reservoirs of the Earth’s system, such as wetlands, inland waters, soils, vegetation, and the marine water column and sediments. We welcome contributions focusing on all spatial scales, from molecular to global, different temporal scales, and studies of the hydrological, geomorphological, and bathymetric controls of carbon sources and sinks. *Session B: Proxies and Models in Climate Research*. Session organizers: Thorsten Mauritsen and Margret Steinthorsdottir This session focuses on climate research involving proxies and climate modelling from the deep time geological past to the future. This includes, but is not limited to, studies on climate sensitivity (the relationship between CO2 and temperature), on changing oceanic and atmospheric circulation modes in different past and future climates, the comparison between proxy-based and model results, and comparison between climates in past and potential future warm periods. This session also offers the possibility to present first results from the climate model inter comparison project CMIP6. *Session C: Earth surface-atmosphere interactions: Physical processes, changes and their impact.* Session organizers: Matt Salter and Kristoffer Hylander Since the beginning of the 20th century global land use has shifted dramatically and approximately two-thirds of the Earth’s ice-free land is now devoted to human use. Such changes impact the characteristics of vegetation, including its colour, seasonal growth and carbon content. We are on course to lose more than half of all the permafrost by the end of the century and the Arctic tundra biome is experiencing increasing fire disturbance. As it stands, sea ice is declining rapidly and an ice-free Arctic Ocean will become a regular summer occurrence in the near future. In addition, humans are affecting both the energy and water budget of the planet by changing the land surface, including redistributing the balance between latent and sensible heat fluxes. These are just a few of the drastic changes that may result in marked changes in the emission of aerosols to the atmosphere with implications for both the direct and indirect effects of aerosols on the Earth’s radiation balance and consequences for Earth’s ecosystems (vegetation, water balance etc).  In this session we welcome contributions on (i) the impact of climate change on the distribution and function of the Earth’s ecosystems from local to global scale; (ii) the impact of land use change and anthropogenic activity on aerosols and clouds; and (iii) our understanding of aerosols originating from natural sources (e.g. mineral dust, sea spray aerosol, secondary particle formation and growth) and their implications for aerosol-cloud processes. *Session D: Changes in climate and biodiversity on multiple timescales.* Session organizers: Fredrik Schenk and Sara Cousins Today, considerable research focus is placed on understanding how the rapidly changing climate causes ecological and evolutionary changes in biodiversity and ecosystems. In the geological past such biological responses have been reconstructed and are often exploited as proxies of climate change. Thus the present can inform the past and vice versa. This session invites presentations that study links between climate, biodiversity and ecosystems on different time scales. This includes work that investigates the effects of climate variation on biodiversity and studies analysing or comparing bio(geo-)chemical proxies and Earth System Model results to understand ecosystem and biodiversity changes. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The on-going pollution of our atmosphere with an invisible odourless gas called carbon dioxide, is trapping heat at the Earth’s surface and causing temperatures to rise on land and in the ocean. The polar regions are warming fastest of all and the melting ice sheets are causing sea levels to rise around the globe. In this talk, Professor Raymo will review evidence for climate change, natural and anthropogenic, and explore how ice sheets and sea level changed in the past. How fast climate changes in the future will depend on our collective actions as individuals, families, communities and governments. Maureen E. Raymo is a renowned scientist who has been a pioneer in the study of ice ages and sea level in Earth’s history. Her work has shaped our understanding of Earth’s natural climate variability and her landmark papers have influenced a generation of scientists. In 2014, Professor Raymo, a fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, the Explorers Club, and the American Geophysical Union, became the first woman to be awarded the Wollaston Medal, the Geological Society of London’s most senior medal and highest accolade. As every year, there will be a poster competition for PhD students. We are looking forward to seeing you at the Bolin Days 2019! Best wishes and have a nice weekend Nina and Alasdair --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear members of the Bolin Centre, You are cordially invited tocontribute to the 11th Bolin Days 2019, by either giving an oral or a poster presentation (or both!) The Bolin Days will feature four sessions, each of which is described below. Please contact the session organizers directly if you want to contribute, and provide the title of your contribution, the speaker (and co-authors if applicable), and the type of presentation you prefer (oral or poster). Please get in touch with the session organizers (see below) no later than October 31st, 2019. Please note that you can only submit your contribution to one session. We would also like to remind all Bolin Centre members that  the Bolin Days are a great occasion to showcase  research that has been supported by  Research Area funding recently. Finally, we encourage all Bolin Centre members to contribute to the general poster session. New for this year is that we also welcome posters which have been presented at other occasions earlier this year, and which you think would fit the Bolin Days poster session well. Best wishes, we are looking forward to seeing you at the Bolin Days! Nina and Alasdair *Bolin Days 2019 - Sessions* *Session A: Carbon sources and sinks.*Session organizers: Volker Brüchertand Anne Soerensen Carbon compounds play a crucial role in all parts of the Earth system, being closely connected to the hydrological cycle, Earth’s radiative balance, or ecosystem health.
