The aim of the project is to develop a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model so that it can be used to quantify the effects of primary and secondary marine organic aerosol on shallow marine clouds. The position is for the time period from January 2020 until the end of December 2021 (start date can be negotiated). Application deadline is October 1, 2019. Dear Members of the Bolin Centre, Welcome back! The new academic year at the Bolin Centre started with a retreat of the Science Advisory Group. At this well-attended retreat the Science Advisory Group began working on defining our future research directions and vision for the Bolin Centre, and also plans for the database and our modelling activities. The retreat was also the first event in which our new coordinator and communicator, Eva Gylfe, participated. Eva joined the Bolin Centre in early August, and will together with Annika coordinate the Bolin Centre's activities, ranging from daily business to big events such as the Bolin Days, the Bert Bolin Climate Lecture and the Bolin Centre PhD day. The Bolin Centre thanks our Rector, for signing a global call for a Climate Emergency from academia. The call (https://www.sdgaccord.org/climateletter (https://www.sdgaccord.org/climateletter) ) includes commitment to a three point plan of action: to mobilize more resources for action-oriented climate change research and skills creation;to commit to going carbon neutral by 2030 or 2050 at the very latest;to increase the delivery of environmental and sustainability education across curriculum, campus and community outreach programs.Kind regards, Nina Kirchner and Alasdair Skelton News from Research Area 1, RA1: Ocean-atmosphere dynamics and climate We now invite proposals for the autumn call for RA1 funding. Examples of previous supported activities are conference attendance, organization of workshops, co-operations with colleagues on RA1-relevant topics, invited speakers, publication fees, field work and instruments. You can apply by filling in the attached application form in full. Every question is compulsory to answer. Please submit your funding applications by email to the research area leaders no later than 10 September 2019. We aim to give feedback in the 1-2 weeks following the deadline. This funding call is primarily for activities completed and claimed by 31 December 2019. Best regards, Thorsten Mauritsen, thorsten.mauritsen at misu.su.se (mailto:thorsten.mauritsen at misu.su.se) and Torben Koenigk, torben.koenigk at smhi.se (mailto:torben.koenigk at smhi.se) News from Research Area 2, RA2: Clouds, aerosols, turbulence and climate RA2 intention is to host a one-day workshop in the spring to bring everybody back together and update each other - detail on this will follow later. We would also like to remind you that there is a possibility to receive funding from RA2 for smaller projects. The proposal should stimulate cooperation within the Bolin Centre and/or in some way strengthen RA2 activities. A 1 page proposal, including budget, should be sent by e-mail to the research area leaders. Proposals are continuously evaluated and the aim is to make a decision within a month. Please also keep us informed of what you are up to within RA2 so we can share information. Also, if you have ideas on how we can facilitate better interaction both within RA2 and with the other research areas we would be happy to hear from you! This is especially beneficial for data users with limited access to high performance facilities or with limited network bandwidth. Via the new IS-ENES3 Transnational Access (TNA) service, *new data near processing capabilities at the centers DKRZ, CNRS-IPSL, STFC-JASMIN (at CEDA), and CMCC will be made accessible to a broader user community*. We have abundant evidence that warmer springs are causing spring phenological events in high latitude environments to advance, with some concern that previously synchronous trophic interactions will become mismatched. I will examine what we can learn by taking a spatial approach, such as the relationship between temperature and optimum timing and the potential for mismatch to be spatially buffered. I will discuss analyses of citizen science datasets and work arising from a 200km transect looking at a simple woodland food chain in Scotland. Bolin Centre Database More than 30 datasets have been published since end of May. One of the new datasets, Global weather forecast data with model EC-Earth — ensemble dataset for historical and future conditions, by Sebastian Scher at the Department of Meteorology (https://bolin.su.se/data/scher-2019 (https://bolin.su.se/data/scher-2019) ) is very large: 153,404 data files together amounting to 8.1 TB disk space. This is our by far largest dataset so far. It is also our first case with a complete dataset from an ensemble simulation with an Earth System Model. Another new dataset is very small, but instead has an attractive way of visually presenting temperature time series: Warming stripes — visualisations of annual temperature series from the Nordic countries, by Nina Kirchner at the Department of Physical Geography (https://bolin.su.se/data/kirchner-2019-warming-stripes (https://bolin.su.se/data/kirchner-2019-warming-stripes) ). Several of the new datasets consist of various meteorological observational data from three expeditions to the Arctic Ocean with icebreaker Oden: Arctic Ocean 2018, Arctic Ocean 2016, and SWERUS-C3, with Michael Tjernström and John Prytherch as responible scientists for the actual data. All these new datasets have been prepared for publication by John Prytherch and they can be found (together with a few previously published similar datasets) by typing https://bolin.su.se/data/?s=prytherch (https://bolin.su.se/data/?s=prytherch) in the address field of a web browser. Another subset of the new data is a collection of Stockholm Historical Weather Observations, containing temperature, air pressure and cloud observation data from the old astronomical observatory in Stockholm back to 1756 together with snow depth observations since 1904. This collection of datasets, managed by Anders Moberg at the Department of Physical Geography, is actually not enterily new in our repository, but each individual dataset is now described with its own metadata. All can be found by typinghttps://bolin.su.se/data/?s=stockholm+historical+weather+observations+astronomical (https://bolin.su.se/data/?s=stockholm+historical+weather+observations+astronomical) . The other new individual datasets are: Stordalen lake temperatures (v 2.0), Patrick Crill, the Department of Geological Sciences: https://bolin.su.se/data/crill-2019 (https://bolin.su.se/data/crill-2019) Glacier-proximal water temperatures in Kongsfjorden and Tempelfjorden, Svalbard, 2016-2017, Nina Kirchner et al.: https://bolin.su.se/data/kirchner-2019-2 (https://bolin.su.se/data/kirchner-2019-2) North Atlantic subpolar gyre index, Léon Chafik, the Department of Meteorology: https://bolin.su.se/data/chafik-2019-2 (https://bolin.su.se/data/chafik-2019-2) Calculated seafloor ruggedness index (TRI) of the Baltic Sea, Martin Jakobsson, the Department of Geological Sciences: https://bolin.su.se/data/jakobsson-2019 (https://bolin.su.se/data/jakobsson-2019) Acoustic midwater data from the Southern Quark, Baltic Sea, 2017.
