However, water availability is threatened both by overexploitation of water resources and anticipated climate change. Even nations with abundant water resources may experience water shortages in the future. Sustainable water planning, therefore, requires reliable assessments of water resources availability - both within the near and far future. December 8-11, 09:00-12:00 The Message Passing Interface (MPI) is the de facto standard for distributed memory parallelism in high performance computing (HPC). MPI is the dominant programming model for modern day supercomputers and will continue to be critical in enabling researchers to scale up their HPC workloads to forthcoming pre-exascale and exascale systems within EuroHPC and elsewhere. This workshop targets programmers in both academia and industry who already have experience with basic MPI and are ready to take the next step to more advanced usage. Topics which will be covered include communicators, groups, derived data types, one-sided communication, non-blocking collectives and hybrid MPI+threading approaches. Lectures will be interleaved with hands-on exercises. All exercises will be written in C, but the instructors will be able to answer questions about MPI in Fortran and Python. Registration and further information: https://enccs.se/events/2020/intermediate-topics-in-mpi/ ============================================================================================ BioExcel/ENCCS online workshop – Advanced topics in simulations with GROMACS January 12-15, 2021, 09:00-12:30 In collaboration with BioExcel, ENCCS is offering an online workshop on advanced GROMACS simulations taught by Dr Mark Abraham, Dr Christian Blau, and Dr Artem Zhmurov. The workshop will be all-virtual on 4 successive mornings January 12-15 2021, 09:00-12:30. Tentative schedule: January 12 – Using umbrella-sampling (“pulling”) simulations January 13 – Using replica-exchange molecular dynamics January 14 – Using applied-weight histogram methods (“AWH”) January 15 – Computing trajectories efficiently on GPUs All sessions will include presentations and hands-on live-coding-style material. Some material will be delivered within virtual machines supplied to the students beforehand that they can install and run on their own computers, and some via access to remote compute clusters. For further information and registration, see https://enccs.se/events/2021/01/advanced-topics-in-simulations-with-gromacs/ The event page will be updated with more detailed information shortly. ============================================================================================ ENCCS/CSC Practical Deep Learning online workshop. February 16-17, 09:00-17:00 In collaboration with CSC in Finland, ENCCS is offering a workshop on February 16-17 on Deep Learning. The course is at an introductory level and will give a practical introduction to deep learning, convolutional and recurrent neural networks, GPU computing, and tools to train and apply deep neural networks for natural language processing, images, and other applications. The course consists of lectures and hands-on exercises. Keras and PyTorch will be used in the exercise sessions. Participants are assumed to have working knowledge of Python and a suitable background in data analysis, machine learning, or a related field. Previous experience in deep learning is not required, but the fundamentals of machine learning are not covered in this course. Basic knowledge of a Linux/Unix environment will be assumed. Demise of a glacier, uncovering a fjord When the last ice age was over, a large glacier covering the 1000 meter deep Hardangerfjord collapsed. These events at the end of the ice age in Norway, resemble what we are about to witness in today’s Greenland. A new study reveals how climate warming caused the great glacier covering Hardanger to collapse around 11.000 years ago. The study is done by a team of scientists from the University of Bergen, the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, the University of Svalbard, Stockholm University, and the Bolin Centre for Climate Research. The latest IPCC report says two-thirds of glaciers in the region could be lost by 2100, but further research is badly needed to clarify how this and monsoonal changes will affect fresh water supplies — on which almost one third of the world’s population depend. To find the answers, scientists will look to the past. The international research team includes Natasha Barbolini from the Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences and the Bolin Centre for Climate Research at Stockholm University. They have recently been granted US $ 1.5 million from the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program to drill one of the largest and deepest lakes on the Tibetan Plateau. Together with the Himalaya-Hindu Kush mountain range, this area stores the largest amount of snow and ice after the Arctic and Antarctic – and is thus called the world’s “Third Pole”. Eric Lambin's research tries to better understand the causes and impacts of land use changes in different parts of the world. His current research focuses on how globalization affects land use and how private and public policies can reduce or even reverse tropical deforestation. This research is gaining in importance as avoiding deforestation and forest regeneration are increasingly recognized as essential nature climate solutions. Tired of cancelled fieldwork? Missing your daily procrastination fika by the coffee machine? Overloaded with Zoom calls and conferences (and currently reading this thinking, oh no, not another one?!)? Polar research has looked very different over the last year as we grapple with life under a global pandemic. We'd like to invite you to reflect on the challenges of the year, both the good and the bad. We will be joined by two researchers who are going to be talking about their experiences during Covid-19, followed by group discussions. This hasn't been the easiest year for anybody, but for everything that hasn't gone as planned, people have been creatively adapting and problem solving, to keep research running. We hope you will take the chance to join us as we look back on this year, and forward to what 2021 will bring (hopefully fika again!)! If you would like to join, sign up through the Google form below, and the link for the event will be sent to your email: https://docs.google.com/.../1FAIpQLSdsopPMuLADdM.../viewform Look forward to seeing you there! This term now refers to the most-recent 30-year period finishing in a year ending with 0 (https://www.wmo.int/pages/prog/wcp/wcdmp/GCDS_1.php) (1991-2020 as of January 1, 2021), rather than to non-overlapping 30-year periods (1901-1930, 1931-1960, 1961-1990, 1991-2020) as was the case previously. We suspect that introduction of a new climatological normal can cause some confusion among members of the general public, especially in the context of the IPCC’s recommendation of keeping warming below 1.5-degrees. We are therefore providing a couple of points which may be helpful when communicating with the public. Calculated from the GISS Surface Temperature Analysis (GISTEMP Team, 2020), the new climatological normal (1991-2020) will be 0.5 degrees warmer than the previous non-overlapping climatological normal (1961-1990).The IPCC’s recommendation of keeping warming below 1.5-degrees is a comparison with “pre-industrial” temperature. This term has multiple definitions. In the IPCC special report: Global warming of 1.5°C (IPCC, 2018), “pre-industrial” refers to the time period between 1850 and 1900. The new climatological normal (1991-2020), calculated from the GISS Surface Temperature Analysis, will be 0.8 degrees warmer than pre-industrial temperature, so-defined.Read more on the Bolin website » (https://bolin.su.se/about-us/news/smhi-revised-definition-of-the-climatological-normal-most-recent-one-becoming-1991-2020-1.532557) New datasets in the Bolin Centre Database Peggy Achtert, Ian M. You participate from home with your computer. We provide the gaming platform and game leaders - grab a drink and join in. Serious gaming has gained increasing prominence in climate change communication, and provides an opportunity to engage new audiences and new platforms for knowledge co-creation and dialogues. This game is about adapting a fictional city, Väderköping, to a changing climate. The players act as decision-makers for the city’s climate adaptation, which provides insight into how the economy and people’s lives are affected by climate adaptation measures. This is an excellent opportunity to test a novel way to communicate climate research, perhaps you are interested in doing something similar with your research?
