Willem will present the key findings from his recent Science Advances (DOI:10.1126/sciadv.aaw5980) paper, which reveals that parts of High Arctic Svalbard remained unglaciated during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Radiocarbon-dated terrestrial plants and Azorean cryptotephra from an analysed lake sediment sequence demonstrate that ice-free and vegetated oases existed before being overrun by non-erosive ice. Comparison with regional paleoclimate data suggest that sea-ice variability controlled this remarkable pattern of glacial evolution by modulating moisture supply. In light of the rapid on-going loss of regional sea-ice these findings could have implications for the future response of the Arctic`s cryosphere. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Benedict Reinardy Assistant Professor Institutionen för Naturgeografi Stockholms Universitet 106 91 Stockholm +46 (0)764961058 http://www.su.se/profiles/brein-1.294342 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Bolin Centre Events 18 FEB Seminar: Methods for analysis of non-stationary hydrological time series Speaker: Dr. Kristina Potočki*, CE, University of Zagreb Time & place: Feb 18 at 12:00-12:45 in the Navarino room, T-house, level 2, Geoscience buildning Traditional approach to the hydrological time series analysis usually starts form the assumptions of linearity and stationarity of hydrological processes that often cannot be met. Hydrological time series analysis in time-frequency domain with different signal processing methods, such as short time Fourier transform and wavelet transform, offers a good complementary approach to the traditional statistical analysis. These methods can be used for preliminary analysis of data and uncovering of non-stationary patterns, but also as a preprocessing tool in series black-box modeling. Examples of the wavelet transform application for the analysis and forblack-box modeling of water level, discharge and suspended sediment series are given and results are compared with traditional statistical approach. Detection of trends and cycleson different time scales with presented methods can help uncovering and better understanding of temporal patterns in hydrological time series. Revealed patterns can be then related to the climate change and anthropological impacts on fluvial processes. The presentations will involve: Introduction to climate calculations throughout the whole value chainPresentation on Science Based Targets, the Paris Agreement and business perspectives on climate calculations and measuresPresentations from the ICT sector and the fashion industryElisabeth Däcker is the Bolin Centre contact for this project. Please contact Elisabeth if you would like to take part in the workshop and/or if you have any thoughts or questions, elisabeth.dacker at geo.su.se (mailto:elisabeth.dacker at geo.su.se) . 4 MARCH Bolin Centre Seminar Series | Research Area 5 Titel: Reconstructing climate and environmental changes from the Lateglacial to modern times from lake and peat sedimentsSpeaker: Minna Väliranta, Environmental Change Research Unit (ECRU), Ecosystems and Environment Research Programme, University of Helsinki, FinlandTime & place: March 4 at Note! Abstract: to be announced. Fika will be served, welcome! Dagen erbjuder både vetenskapliga inslag och musikuppträdanden - boka in det i kalendern redan nu. 25-26 NOV Bolin Days Welcome to this year’s Bolin Days. If you are interested in Climate and the Earth Sciences, you are welcome to join us. We offer an interesting scientific programme and lots of fun social events. The Bolin Centre Weekly News provides you with a selection of our current activities and latest news and is sent to all members of the Bolin Centre. If you have suggestions that you would like to include in coming Weekly News, you are welcome to send these to bolin at su.se. Part I: Lake sedimentary archives contain, in the form of macroscopic and microscopic plant remains, valuable information of past climate and associated changes in floral communities. Sedimentary pollen assemblages have been the traditional way to quantitatively reconstruct past climate. While this approach typically neglects taxa that occur in small proportions in pollen records, namely many local non-arboreal taxa, recent methodological development in applying macroscopic fossil plant remains data has allowed quantitative estimations of past temperatures based on local and rare taxa. The new approach shows that warming at the Late glacial-Holocene transition happened earlier with considerably higher summer temperatures than traditional estimates. The new results are consistent with much higher orbital summer insolation. Part II: Peatlands act as an integral global biogeochemical agent. Recent modelling studies predict that due to warming northern peatlands will act as an increasingly effective carbon sink over the next century. However, other studies suggest widespread drying of European peatlands. These scenarios partly override each other. Our data from subarctic peatlands suggest drying over the recent decades and increased carbon accumulation rate.
