If you’re working on any topic relating to Earth system resilience – we are especially interested in the biophysical and socioeconomic determinants of Earth’s long-term stability, modelling and analysis of nonlinear feedbacks and tipping points, and the potential for rapid social transformations to global sustainability – then please consider submitting to our session! We are also pleased to announce that Prof. Markus Reichstein of MPI-Biogeochemistry Jena will feature as our invited speaker. The abstract submission deadline is this coming Wednesday 15 January 2020, 13:00 CET. Best wishes, Dr. David A. McKay and colleagues ~ ITS3.5/CL3.9: Earth Resilience in the Anthropocene: tipping dynamics in the World-Earth system https://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU2020/session/35778 Co-organized by BG1/CR7/NP8/OS1 | Abstract submission Conveners: David Armstrong McKay, Sarah Cornell, Jonathan Donges, James Dyke, Ricarda Winkelmann Earth system resilience critically depends on the nonlinear interplay of positive and negative feedbacks of biophysical processes. Earth system science has established a robust understanding of dynamics in the carbon cycle, large-scale ecosystems, atmosphere, ocean, and cryosphere. Recent developments in policy, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement on climate, and also in cross-discipline scientific debate about entering the Anthropocene have recognised the need for better understanding and characterization of the resilience of the Earth system to planetary-scale human impacts. Maintaining Earth in the Holocene-like conditions that have enabled the development of the world’s societies will require better understanding of tipping dynamics in both the human world and the biophysical Earth. Societies will need to embark on rapid global-scale socio-economic transformations, to reduce the risk of crossing tipping points in the Earth system, potentially triggering cascading changes at multiple temporal and spatial scales. Earth resilience brings the complex dynamics and perturbations associated with human activities into Earth system analysis, and increasingly captures socio-economic as well as biophysical dynamics. In this session we invite contributions on all topics relating to Earth resilience, such as assessing the biophysical and social determinants of the Earth’s long-term stability, modelling and analysis of nonlinearity, feedback processes, tipping points and abrupt shifts in the Earth system, and the potential for rapid social transformations to global sustainability. Available fundingThe total budget of the call is approximately 400,000 SEK. The budget for proposed projects should be for no more than 100,000 SEK. Eligible applicantsThe main applicant should be a member of RA3 and be employed at SU, KTH or SMHI. Format of proposalsThe competitive proposal should fit within maximum of two pages and should contain a project background and motivation, a description of relevance for RA3, a project plan, expected output and a budget. Font Times New Roman 10, single-spaced. No CV:s or publication lists are to be submitted. EvaluationProposals will be evaluated based on (1) scientific quality, (2) relevance to the scope of RA3 and (3) effort to build new collaborations within the Bolin Centre. New Research from the Bolin Centre How AI will affect UN goals for climate, development and global stability Artificial intelligence (AI) represents a powerful but double-edged sword as nations confront global warming, poverty and issues of peace and justice. An international team of scientists, led by Ricardo Vinuesa from KTH, released a first-ever study of how AI can help (as well as hinder) sustainable development worldwide. Published in Nature Communications, the analysis focuses on how AI impacts the 17 goals for sustainable development adopted by the United Nations in 2015. The research results as a whole show that 134 of these targets could benefit from AI, while another 59 goals would not.
