Warmest winter in Stockholm on record This year’s winter in Stockholm (https://bolin.su.se/about-us/news/warmest-winter-in-stockholm-on-record-1.487784) is the warmest one on record since daily weather observations began in 1756. The Bolin Centre for Climate Research database (https://bolin.su.se/data/) now presents live temperature data through new interactive graphics. Explore data and read about the history behind Stockholm Historical Weather Observations (https://bolin.su.se/data/stockholm) . Stockholm most likely holds the world's longest continuous record of air temperature, and although there are places like Uppsala where one started earlier, the locations of the observations have been changing. In Stockholm however, the observations have always been carried out from the same geographical location, and that is unique. Nowadays, the weather station by Stockholms old observatory is included in the SMHI’s national station network. “Thanks to the extensive record, we know that the annual average temperature in Stockholm and its surrounding area during the 2000s have been, on average, 1.5 to 1.7 degrees warmer than the climate that prevailed here from the 1750s to the early 1900s. This change is mainly due to human caused global warming” explains Anders Moberg, climate scientist and coordinator of the Bolin Centre for Climate Research Database at Stockholm University. This year’s winter, ranging from December to February, had an average temperature of +2.6°C. That is 5.6 degrees warmer than the average for the 250-year period between 1756–2005, and 1.0 degrees warmer than the two second warmest winters: 1790 and 2008. Minna is also a member of ArcticAvenue (https://bolin.su.se/arctic-avenue) - a spearhead project on joint Arctic research between Stockholm University and the University of Helsinki. If you work are in need to get additional funding for Arctic research, you need a partner from UH to be eligible. Minna could either be your partner or can help you to find one at UH. Second, please note the following information regarding the Corona-Virus and how it may affect your grant: As RA-leaders, we provide funding for you to travel, do fieldwork, attend conferences etc. but we are not your employer who is responsible for your safety or permission and conditions regarding your travel. Due to the Corona-Virus, there is an increasing number of travel restrictions which might affect your granted projects. Before you travel, make sure you follow the restrictions and guidelines of your department which may change on a daily basis. Typically, the head of your department and/or head of administration should be contacted in case of questions or problems, not the Bolin Centre. But it is useful for us if you put us in CC. Please inform us any time and as soon as possible about changes regarding the use of your grants and if you intend to travel + where. We will keep your grant alive in case you need to postpone or cancel the project. At some point later in the year, we might need to spend the money on alternatives due to end-of-year budget requirements but you will get the opportunity to use the grant even later, if applicable. So don't make any desperate decisions and stay safe and informed! We hope to see many of you on Wednesday. Sedimentary pollen assemblages have been the traditional way to quantitatively reconstruct past climate. While this approach typically neglects taxa that occur in small proportions in pollen records, namely many local non-arboreal taxa, recent methodological development in applying macroscopic fossil plant remains data has allowed quantitative estimations of past temperatures based on local and rare taxa. The new approach shows that warming at the Late glacial-Holocene transition happened earlier with considerably higher summer temperatures than traditional estimates. The new results are consistent with much higher orbital summer insolation. Part II: Peatlands act as an integral global biogeochemical agent. Recent modelling studies predict that due to warming northern peatlands will act as an increasingly effective carbon sink over the next century. However, other studies suggest widespread drying of European peatlands. These scenarios partly override each other. Our data from subarctic peatlands suggest drying over the recent decades and increased carbon accumulation rate. 2. I bifogade två dokument beskrivs respektive utlysning närmare. We welcome research projects with a budget up to 100,000 SEK. Projects that propose longer-term commitments (e.g. to establish time-series of measurements), with the total sum distributed over several years will also be considered. Applications for launching new initiatives ("seed money") with synergies to ongoing research or new collaborations between units in the Bolin Centre are encouraged. We will not prioritize applications for travel to conferences or similar. We particularly encourage projects relevant to the RA4 flagship area "Matching bottom-up and top-down approaches for scaling greenhouse gas balances". Current estimates of global biogeochemical budgets suffer from poor convergence of top-down versus bottom-up scaling approaches. Scientific challenges include poor coverage of greenhouse gas measuring stations as well as poorly constrained estimates of the extent and dynamics of important natural or managed greenhouse gas sources and sinks, such as wetlands, permafrost, agricultural land, coastlines and coastal oceans. Under this broader topic, RA4 proposes to support projects which estimate temporal and spatial variability of greenhouse gas exchange or carbon balances in aquatic and terrestrial environments. Submit an application via email to gustaf.hugelius at natgeo.su.se and volker.bruchert at geo.su.se. The application should be 1-2 pages and include these headings: Summary and research questions, Background, Method, Synergies to ongoing research and Budget. Include a short CV for the main applicant. Sincerely, Gustaf and Volker -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
