A key question is whether plasticity facilitates evolution by enabling persistence or hinders evolution by buffering selection. I will present a phenotype-based forecasting framework for montane butterflies, which finds that plasticity facilitates evolution by reducing fluctuations in selection, particularly in more seasonal environments. Repeating historic lab and field studies and examining museum specimens reveals both the viability of evolutionary responses and their constraints and lags. The research highlights the importance of considering interacting organismal responses to climate change. I will also introduce the TrEnCh project that aims to improve ecological forecasts by developing computational and visualization tools for Translating Environmental Change into organismal responses. ---------- Gustaf Hugelius Senior Lecturer Department of Physical Geography Stockholm University Contact: gustaf.hugelius at natgeo.su.se +468 674 78 73 Stockholm University Dept. of Physical Geography Gustaf Hugelius SE-106 91 Stockholm Sweden -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The course will be a week long virtual event held in the week starting the 23rd of November 2020. The diversity and rapid change of the many supercomputing architectures used to run weather and climate codes and of the programming models required seriously affects the development productivity and the ability to retain a single source code running efficiently everywhere. Domain-specific languages (DSLs) provide a solution to the productivity and portability of these codes. This training course provides insights into the DSLs considered in ESiWACE2 (PSyclone, and the Dawn DSL ecosystem) and demonstrates how to apply them to weather and climate models. Registration is now open! If you would like to attend the training course, please fill out the following registration form not later than the 30th of October: https://www.esiwace.eu/events/esiwace2-dsl-training/registration-dsl-training-2020 Registration for the Training on Domain Specific Languages, November 2020 — ESIWACE www.esiwace.eu This is the registration page for the online Training on Domain Specific Languages in November 2020. Additional information about the training event is available at: https://www.esiwace.eu/events/esiwace2-dsl-training ESiWACE2 Domain Specific Language (DSL) training — ESIWACE www.esiwace.eu This five day virtual training course provides insights into the DSLs considered in ESiWACE2 and demonstrates how to apply them to weather and climate models. The course is organised in the context of the “Centre of Excellence in Simulation of Weather and Climate in Europe, Phase 2” (ESiWACE2). The ESiWACE2 project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 823988. Please feel free to circulate this invitation to anyone who might be interested in attending this training course. For the month of October, we welcome Prof. Brian Thomas. Date and time: Tuesday, October 20 at 2pm; Join by Zoom https://stockholmuniversity.zoom.us/j/8295564699 Title: Rejected recharge: The story of what lies beneath Abstract: It has long been assumed that watershed storage provides vital stores to sustain surface water flow during periods of dryness, with some arguing that water storage serves as the primary source for flow. The important hydrologic connection between discharge and watershed storage is deemed to be under threat, as changes in land cover and climate interconnect to alter groundwater balance. Recent advances in hydrograph recession analysis has spurred methods to evaluate storage sensitivity of streamflow, providing a framework to assess changes in how a watershed stores, transmits and discharges water. In this presentation, we will evaluate the evidence that links storage sensitivity and water storage. I’ll argue that the development of temporal sensitivities highlights the influence of human and climate interactions, upsetting the resilience of flow regimes. Bio: Brian Thomas is currently a Senior Lecturer in Hydrology at Newcastle University School of Engineering, United Kingdom. He holds a BSc in Geology from the University of North Dakota, MSc in Hydrology from the University of New Hampshire, and PhD in Water Resources Engineering, Tufts University. His postdoctoral research focused on the application of remote sensing in groundwater studies at University California, Irvine and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. ENCCS is one of the 33 national HPC Competence centers across Europe. The mission of ENCCS is to develop competence, knowledge and support in Sweden to enable academic and industrial researchers and high performance computing (HPC) users to take advantage of both forthcoming (pre-)exascale EuroHPC resources as well as modern artificial intelligence and high-performance data analytics (AI/HPDA) methodologies. ENCCS and SNIC will be collaborating in these activities within Sweden. A key part of this mission will be to deliver training events for HPC/AI/HPDA users and developers who aim to scale up their workloads or adapt their HPC/AI/HPDA software to new or different hardware platforms. Results from this survey will help us in mapping out a training portfolio for the coming years and getting a better understanding of existing competencies in Sweden. Whether you are an early-stage HPC/AI/HPDA user or a seasoned developer, in an academic or industry environment, your participation is important. It also gives you an opportunity to influence future training events! When possible training events will be organized in collaboration with SNIC training and advanced user support. The link to the survey: https://sunet.artologik.net/uu/enccs-training-survey We would appreciate to receive your answer by *Friday 30th of October* We would also appreciate if you forward it to the relevant persons in your institution or group. If you want to keep up to date on ENCCS activities or get information about upcoming training events, you can: visit our web page: https://enccs.se/ sign up for the ENCCS newsletter follow us on Twitter or on LinkedIn. Arctic Ocean sediments reveal permafrost thawing during past climate warming Sea floor sediments of the Arctic Ocean can help scientists understand how permafrost responds to climate warming. A multidisciplinary team from Stockholm University has found evidence of past permafrost thawing during climate warming events at the end of the last ice age. Their findings, published in Science Advances, caution about what could happen in the near future: That Arctic warming by only a few degrees C may trigger massive permafrost thawing, coastal erosion, and the release of the greenhouse gases carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) into the atmosphere. Deserts spread across the lowlands, and biological diversity was permanently affected. Caused by rapid changes in climate and atmospheric carbon dioxide, this event was a critical tipping point for Asian ecosystems that in fact shaped the modern biome. Widespread desertification lasted for almost 20 million years, and vegetation only began to recolonise the lowlands when it became temporarily wetter, during the mid-Miocene Climatic Optimum. Climate was thus a major driver of regime shifts in the Central Asian steppe-desert biome during the Cenozoic. Now, rapid changes in climate and atmospheric carbon dioxide are once again causing widespread desertification in Asia. Based on past behavior, this is a sign of impending ecosystem breakdown, with serious negative implications for biodiversity, agriculture, and human wellbeing. These climate projections are made by climate models and come in a variety of forms. In this seminar, we focus on so-called probabilistic climate projections of global-mean temperatures, which provide not only a best-estimate of future climate but also its uncertainty. We begin by discussing the scenarios which are currently being run by the world’s most powerful climate models (Earth System Models, ESMs) and our role in creating the greenhouse gas concentration timeseries used in these scenarios. Then we examine available results from models participating in the Sixth Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6), using the output from a new tool we have developed. We discuss how these CMIP6 results differ from probabilistic projections and explain how we make probabilistic projections for global- annual-mean quantities using our reduced complexity climate model, MAGICC7. Finally, we present a newly available tool which allows users to visualise these projections and examine how sensitive they are to our understanding of the climate system. He is one of the Lead Authors for the forthcoming IPCC Sixth Assessment Report on the physical climate science, part of the Core Writing Team of the IPCC Synthesis Report, the founding Director of the Climate & Energy College at the University of Melbourne and Co-Director of the Energy Transition Hub. His primary research interests and experiences relate to scenarios, probabilistic climate change projections, and international climate negotiations. Malte has been the scientific advisor to the German Environmental Ministry, being part of the German negotiation team at international climate change negotiations for more than 10 years. In his scientific career, he received a Australian Research Council’s Future Fellowship Award to investigate Australia’s fair contribution towards a global mitigation effort. Malte is Associate Professor in Climate Science at the University of Melbourne and also affiliated with the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany, where he worked before coming to Melbourne in 2011. He is the only researcher to have contributed heavily to the development of both MAGICC and FaIR, the two reduced complexity climate models used for emissions scenario assessment in the IPCC’s Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C. Alongside Malte, he leads the Reduced Complexity Model Intercomparison Project (RCMIP), which performs standardised evaluation of reduced complexity climate models (see rcmip.org). He also led the development of a common resource for reduced complexity model calibration data based on ESM output (cmip6.science.unimelb.edu.au) and helped create the input greenhouse gas datasets for CMIP6’s future scenario experiments (greenhousegases.science.unimelb.edu.au). Before his PhD, Zebedee completed his undergraduate Masters course in Physics at St. John’s College, University of Oxford. Beyond his PhD and Climate Resource work, Zebedee is also a Contributing Author to Chapter 1 of Working Group 1 of the forthcoming IPCC Sixth Assessment Report.
