Kebnekaise’s south peak continues to melt On August 14, 2021, the southern peak of Sweden´s highest mountain Kebnekaise was measured at 2 094,6 meters above sea level by researchers at Tarfala Research Station. This is the lowest height that has been measured since the measurements started in the 1940s, and almost two meters lower than the corresponding time last year. Bolin Centre researcher lead author of IPCC report There is a stronger connection between climate change and extreme weather than has previously been demonstrated. The ongoing climate changes are faster than expected and we risk reaching 1,5 degrees global warming already in the early 2030s. This is shown in IPCC’s first part of the Sixth Assessment Report, Climate Change 2021: The Physical Science Basis. Bolin Centre researcher Thorsten Mauritsen at the Department of Meteorology, Stockholm University, is one of the lead authors. North Pole celebrations for the SAS Polar expedition on icebreaker Oden summer 2021 On August 16, John Prytherch and Sonja Murto from MISU reached the North Pole on the icebreaker Oden, halfway through the SAS Arctic expedition. After a month of hard work they enjoyed a BBQ and did the northermost ever Lindy Hop dance performance on the ice, courtesy of MISUs own dance choreographer Sonja Murto.
