However, Covid 19 has also created opportunities by enhancing the community’s use of online communications platforms. We are deeply aware of the unusually heavy burden that family responsibilities associated with child- and elder-care during Covid have placed on many of us, but particularly on women in science. Consequently, we would like to highlight and celebrate women’s research contributions through this online seminar. The seminar features monthly presentations by twelve women who have made significant contributions to our understanding of rivers. Each talk will be live, with a live Q&A session after. The talks will also be recorded and the recordings will be archived on a freely available website hosted by Penn State. For the month of February, we welcome Prof. Jay Famiglietti from the University of Saskatchewan. Date and time: Wednesday, February 17th at 15h00; Join by Zoom https://stockholmuniversity.zoom.us/j/8295564699 Title: Emerging Threats to Global Water Security as Viewed from Space Abstract: The evolving water cycle of the 21st century is proving to be stronger and more variable, resulting in broad swaths of mid-latitude drying, accelerated by the depletion of the world’s major groundwater aquifers. A well-defined geography of freshwater ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots’ is clearly emerging. What does water sustainability mean under such dynamic climate and hydrologic conditions, in particular when coupled with future projections of population growth? How will water managers cope with these new normals, and how will food and energy production be impacted? In this presentation, I will review what nearly two decades of satellite research tells us about emerging threats to water security. I will share my personal experiences with science communication and water diplomacy, and I will encourage the next generation of water scientists to seek out transdisciplinary experiences as part of their graduate and postgraduate training. Bio: Jay Famiglietti is a professor of hydrology and Executive Director of the Global Institute for Water Security at the University of Saskatchewan, where he holds the Canada 150 Research Chair in Hydrology and Remote Sensing. Before moving to USask, Famiglietti served as the Senior Water Scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He has held previous faculty positions in Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine, and in Geological Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. His research group uses satellites and develops advanced computer models to track how freshwater availability is changing around the globe. A fellow of the American Geophysical Union and the Geological Society of America, Famiglietti is a regular advisor to state, provincial and federal government officials on water security issues, and External Science Advisor of the Bolin Centre. Bolin Centre Seminar Series | Research Area 2 Time & venue: March 31 at 14h00 (CET), Zoom Title: Addressing the Arctic cloud problem in regional and global modelsSpeaker: Gillian Young, Institute for Climate and Atmospheric Science, School of Earth and Environment, University of Leeds, UK Clouds are a key component of the Arctic climate system. They warm or cool the surface by trapping terrestrial heat or reflecting solar radiation and are the primary control for the surface energy balance. However, numerical models often fail to capture their long lifetime and associated radiative impact due to the poor representation of small-scale interactions which occur internally within the clouds themselves and externally with their environment. Such processes act on scales much smaller than the grid size of a climate model, and the mathematical relationships we use to describe them in our model world are typically still based on knowledge gained from the mid-latitudes. These relationships are therefore often inappropriate for the unique polar atmosphere, and are likely hindering our ability to properly model the role of clouds in the Arctic climate system. Using measurements from the recent Arctic Ocean 2018 expedition to the central Arctic, I will show that two different large-scale models – the Met Office Unified Model and European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasting Integrated Forecasting System – have consistent weaknesses when simulating Arctic clouds and their interactions with their environment. By identifying where these models are under-performing, we can inform development strategies to improve our Arctic cloud modelling capability and thus enable more representative predictions of the future Arctic climate. [Bild] A new warming phase in the Subpolar North Atlantic The waters in the Subpolar North Atlantic – the area between Greenland, Iceland and Scotland – are an important part of the Atlantic overturning circulation (popularly known as the Gulf stream) that keeps it running. The area is known for its temperature variations, and data available from the 1950s show that some decades are warmer, other cooler. 2005–2015 has been a cool period, but since 2016 and onwards, scientists now can see the first signs of a new warming period. The results are presented in a new article published today in Communications Earth & Environment, by Damien Desbruyères, Léon Chafik, and Guillaume Maze. One article published in Global Biogeochemical Cycles led by Umeå researcher Matthias Siewert, and with Gustaf Hugelius as co-author, is describing how permafrost and periglacial landforms cause a unique variability in Arctic soils. A second article in Science Advances provides a new map for the soil organic carbon stored in the circumpolar permafrost region.
