From david.armstrongmckay at su.se Wed Jan 6 12:41:21 2021 From: david.armstrongmckay at su.se (David Armstrong McKay) Date: Wed, 6 Jan 2021 11:41:21 +0000 Subject: [Bolincentret-at-su.se] vEGU21 session invitation: Earth resilience and tipping dynamics in the Anthropocene (CL3.1.10) Message-ID: Dear colleagues, (apologies for cross-posting) We would like to invite you to submit an abstract to our session on Earth resilience and tipping dynamics in the Anthropocene at the next (online) EGU General Assembly (vEGU21, April 19-30th 2021). Please find a description of the session below, the deadline for abstract submission is in a week's time on January 13th (13:00 UTC+1), and EGU membership renewal is encouraged before January 9th. Feel free to forward this invitation to your colleagues. Looking forward to your contributions and to meeting you virtually at EGU2021, Best regards, Jonathan Donges, David Armstrong McKay, Sarah Cornell, James Dyke, Ricarda Winkelmann — CL3.1.10, Co-organized by BG1/CR7/NP8 Earth resilience and tipping dynamics in the Anthropocene In 2015, the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement on climate recognised the deteriorating resilience of the Earth system, with planetary-scale human impacts constituting a new geological epoch: the Anthropocene. Earth system resilience critically depends on the nonlinear interplay of positive and negative feedbacks of biophysical and increasingly also socio-economic processes. These include dynamics in the carbon cycle, large-scale ecosystems, atmosphere, ocean, and cryosphere that can absorb geophysical shocks (e.g. volcanic eruptions), as well as the dynamics and perturbations associated with human activities. Maintaining Earth in the Holocene-like interglacial state within which the world’s societies evolved over the past ~10,000 years will require industrialised societies to embark on rapid global-scale socio-economic transformations. In addition to incrementally increasing environmental hazards, there is a risk of crossing tipping points in the Earth system triggering partly irreversible and potentially cascading changes. In this session we invite contributions on all topics relating to Earth resilience, such as assessing the biophysical and social determinants of the Earth’s long-term stability, negative feedback processes, modelling and data analysis and integration of nonlinearity, tipping points and abrupt shifts in the Earth system, and the potential for rapid social transformations to global sustainability. https://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU21/session/40781 ________________________________ ~ Dr. David Armstrong McKay Researcher, Earth Resilience in the Anthropocene (ERA) project, Planetary Boundaries group Stockholm Resilience Centre, Stockholm University, Kräftriket 2B, SE-10691 Stockholm, Sweden Work Mob: +46737078874 / Ext: 7845 SRC Page: bit.ly/2Oga3hp | Researchgate: bit.ly/2dmppjy | Google Scholar: bit.ly/2cM0Z48 | Outreach: climatetippingpoints.info ~ My contract at SRC ends on December 26th, after which I may no longer have access to this email address (depending on my status afterwards). EGU has now extended the submission deadline to 20 January 2020, 13:00 CET, encouraging all to "submit soon, update later" (Once submitted, your abstract can be updated, more at https://www.egu21.eu/). Now with extensive scheme of fee reduction and waiver, the GA is an excellent opportunity for Master students, PhD candidates, and ECS to attend from anywhere in the world and present their work online. Below please find the details of the session and reach out if you have any questions. All the best of the new year, Sina Khatami, on behalf of the conveners Shervan Gharari, Björn Guse, Luis Samaniego, and Simon Stisen Understanding and representing hydrological processes is the basis for developing and improving hydrological and Earth system models. Modeling and learning is a symbiotic and continuous process through which our understanding of human-natural systems is formulated and tested constantly. As a result, a variety of models are developed and trained by quantitative and qualitative data across desired temporal and spatial scales. In this session, we welcome contributions on the development of novel data sets and frameworks for model development and evaluation across spatio-temporal scales from catchment to continental scale hydrology. The vision of our session, following the initiative of 23 Unsolved Problems in Hydrology (UPH, https://doi.org/10.1080/02626667.2019.1620507), is to address three questions: What are the hydrologic laws at the catchment scale and how do they change with scale? How can hydrological models be adapted to be able to extrapolate to changing conditions, including changing vegetation dynamics? How can we disentangle and reduce model structural/parameter/input uncertainty in hydrological prediction? We welcome contributions that (but not limited to): (1) introduce new global and regional data products into the modeling process; (2) introduce new approaches for model calibration and evaluation, especially to improve process representation, and/or to improve model predictions under changing conditions; (3) improve model structure by representing often neglected processes in hydrological models such as human impacts, river regulations, irrigation, as well as vegetation dynamics; (4) provide novel concepts for improving the characterization of internal and external model fluxes and their spatio-temporal dynamics; (5) upscale experimentalists' knowledge from smaller to larger scale by identifying driving forces for spatial patterns for a better usage of them in models; (6) suggest more effective monitoring and seamless modeling of spatial patterns in hydrology and land models using distributed earth observations; (7) develop novel approaches and performance metrics for evaluating and constraining models in space and time; and (8) identify model limitations and conceptual improvements that are of general relevance to the geosciences modeling community. This session is organized as part of the grass-root modelling initiative on "Improving the Theoretical Underpinnings of Hydrologic Models" launched in 2016. It is aimed at new users of UNIX and will discuss UNIX skills required to work on a typical HPC cluster, such as provided by SNIC and LUNARC. Topics include manipulating files and directories, editing file contents and the development of simple scripts, such as required for job submission. Time: 10 February at 14:00 For more information and registration visit: http://www.lunarc.lu.se/training/an-introduction-to-the-unixlinux-commandline-10-february-2021/ ===================================================================== Online training seminar: Cluster architecture and job submission, 17 February 2020 at 14:00 This event explains key features of a contemporary HPC cluster, such as deployed at LUNARC and throughout SNIC. It will explain the principles behind the job scheduler and how the scheduler can be used to accomplish your computational work in an efficient manner. The examples will utilise the SLURM scheduler, which is deployed on the SNIC resources. Time: 17 February at 14:00 For more information and registration visit: http://www.lunarc.lu.se/training/cluster-architecture-and-job-submission-17th-februrary-2021/ ============================================================================================ Training in R ============================================================================================ Online training course: "Using R in an HPC environment" in Umeå, 25-26 February 2021 HPC2N is offering a course on R in HPC environment. The course will be two half-days, and it will be given online, through Zoom. There is interest among R users to get started in High Performance Computing (HPC) as they need more CPU power, memory or both. Because most of the Machine Learning (ML) models in R are computationally demanding, they are a good starting point to introduce HPC concepts. In the present course, you will learn how to improve your code so that it could run more efficiently on a Desktop and also in an HPC environment. As realistic ML models are computationally expensive when running on a Desktop, we will also teach you how to run these models on Kebnekaise, a HPC cluster at our center. The focus of the course will not be about ML though. The course will consist of a mix of lectures and hands-ons sessions. For more information and registration, see: https://www.hpc2n.umu.se/events/courses/r-in-hpc-spring-2021 ============================================================================================ Training in parallel computing ============================================================================================ Online training course: An introduction to shared memory parallel programming using OpenMP, 9 - 12 March 2021 OpenMP provides an efficient method to write parallel programs in C, C++ and Fortran. OpenMP programs are suitable for execution on shared memory architectures such as modern multi core systems or a single compute node of the HPC clusters deployed within SNIC. This event is a collaboration between HPC2N and LUNARC. This course will introduce participants to the shared-memory model for parallel programming and the OpenMP application-programming interface. In many cases OpenMP allows an existing serial program to be upgraded incrementally, starting with the parallelisation of the most time-consuming parts of the code. Typically OpenMP programs are easily ported from one shared memory multi processor system to another one. More advanced OpenMP training events are planed during spring 2021. These will be offered by SNIC, PRACE or ENCCS and explain OpenMP tasks and GPU programming with OpenMP. This event provides an introduction to the core features of OpenMP and offers a foundation for the more specialised events. Humanitarian needs crucial for UN disaster relief after climate disasters A new crossdisciplinary study published in PNAS finds that aid provided by the United Nations (UN) in the aftermath of climate-related disasters is driven by humanitarian need rather than by strategic donor interests. The results underline the importance of climate-related hazards for understanding aid disbursements. SynopsisPICTURE A SCIENTIST chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries – including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists – who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all. I will have a room available in my flat, starting from 1st March and for long term. It is a very nice and big apartment with 2 bedrooms, big living and kitchen (with dishwasher, washing machine, and bath). The area is Liljeholmen, which is nice since both red lines stop there, so you rarely have to wait for the metro. It takes 12minutes by metro to reach tcentralen and something around 22 minutes to SU. There is a mall in the metro station with many shops and for supermarkets you have are Ica, Lidl, and Willys. There is a nice lake and parks in the surroundings, which make it ideal for a for a walk, run or working out (there is even a small beach in the lake), and it is at a walking distance to Hornstull and sodermalm for the weekends (once live is back) :D I attach some pics of the place. The rent is 8000 sek/month. You will be sharing with me :) Spanish 32 year old researcher, who lived in Stockholm for 4 years. I would love to find someone likeminded with whom I can have a friendly home. Needless to say you will have access to the whole apartment and nice paellas some Sundays! Please if someone is interested get in contact with me and we can have a chat and get to know each other (via zoom or corona-friendly in-person meeting!). This is shown in a new study where researchers have succeeded in tracing plastic pollution since the 1930s and 1940s by analyzing seagrass sediments. ICCI is seeking an early career scientist (ECS, from master’s to post-doctoral level) as its “Nordic” outreach coordinator-scientist (Swedish, Norwegian or Danish speaker, but with a strong ability to communicate in the Swedish context), to work on the “Cryo1.5°” effort in Sweden and the Nordic countries. We anticipate that this early career scientist best knows the cryosphere science in their own area of expertise, yet is willing to learn and communicate all five dynamics on which we focus in relation to the 1.5° goal: ice sheets, sea ice, glaciers, permafrost and polar oceans. Social media skills are important; but this position will also provide basic communications and on-the-job training; including working with climate policy makers, in a way meant to develop the ECS's future career as well. To summarize, the position: - Would be ideal for a post-doc, PhD or even master’s student for whom Covid-19 may have delayed field work or research; - Will be part-time (15-20 hours/wk, though this will vary and the applicant needs to be flexible to allow more demanding periods, at the same time as ICCI would be flexible to less work during periods of academic demand); - Would require a commitment through August 2021, although if an applicant is available to continue through the fall we have funding for that; this could include participation at COP-26 in Glasgow; - Manage outreach to Sweden (in the first instance and as a “testing ground”), and ideally the other Nordic countries in concert with our global outreach program and coordinator (Dr. Heidi Sevestre, a French glaciologist, see: https://www.heidisevestre.com ) as well as under the supervision of ICCI’s director; - and again, excellent “skandinaviska” language skills essential. The position would be as a consultant, with a monthly honoraria around SEK10-15,000 per month (apologies, NGO budget, might be able to do a bit more depending on experience), plus any expenses; and free related communications training. Emails indicating interest, with CV may be sent to heidi at iccinet.org» (mailto:heidi at iccinet.org) . [Bild] Online film screening: Picture a Scientist The Section for Earth and Environmental Sciences and the Gender Academy at Stockholm University are hosting an online film screening of PICTURE A SCIENTIST, available to watch between January 31st and February 2nd, followed by a panel discussion on Friday 5th February at 15.00–16.30.
