Bolin Centre Seminar Series RA8 Title: Variation in the thermal tolerance of plants at global and local scales Speaker: Aelys M. Humphreys, Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Science Time: 20 October, 14h00-15h00 Location: William Olsson and Zoom Temperature has long been considered one of the strongest determinants of plant distribution patterns globally. This is particularly true for cold temperatures because the physiology required to tolerate cold and freezing conditions is complex and assumed to be difficult to evolve. Yet, since their origins in the warm, wet tropics, flowering plants have clearly transitioned to temperate climates multiple times independently. Furthermore, evidence to suggest that cold tolerance can evolve relatively quickly is accumulating. Aelys M. Humphreys will present her ongoing research that addresses this contradiction. Urban butterflies and moths have evolved adaptations that extend their flight season A new study shows that butterflies and moths tend to be active later in the fall in urban than in rural environments. Experiments demonstrate that their response to seasonal variation in day length has evolved, resulting in a later start of the overwintering state, called diapause, in urban populations. Numerical models of the global climate system are essential in research carried out at the Bolin Centre. Earth system models are used across the research areas to study topics covering deep ocean circulation, land surface processes, atmospheric composition and dynamics and upper atmospheric physics. Bolin Centre researchers also participate in the development of the next generation of Earth System Models. The modelling coordination team at the centre ascertains that the necessary computational resources are available for the Bolin Centre researchers to be able to carry out this work. We are going to the Netherlands as part of my Formas mobility project (I'll be at PBL). Our apartment is 61m2 and has 3 rooms + kitchen, bathroom and balcony. So ideal for a couple or a small family. It's furnished, and available from December 1st. 16000 SEK/month, everything included. It is on Gullmarsvägen 56 in Årsta, just across the bridge from Södermalm, and directly next to Årstaskogen nature reserve for your daily submersion in nature (or the water of årstaviken). The apartment lies on the corner and the top floor of a 3-floor apartment building, with a shared laundry room, cycle room, a garden with a grill and picnic bench, and a small extra apartment which you can rent for guests. A bus stops next door, but the transport hub Gullmarsplan is 6 min walking distance. SRC is 30 min by bike. Send me an email if you are interested. Welcome to take a look. Cheers, Jan p.s. all good with little Christoph. He grows like cabbage. They play a primary role in the global water and carbon cycles, with significant impacts on climate variability. A better characterization of their distribution and dynamic over the whole globe is therefore of highest priority, including for the management of water resources. However, despite their importance, basic questions are still opened such as: what are the spatio-temporal variations of the fluxes and storages of continental freshwater across scales and how do they interact with climate and the anthropogenic pressure? Those questions are specifically important for the Tropics which are now facing growing demands for freshwater availability. Firstly, using multi-satellite observation techniques, we will quantify the global variations of monthly surface water extent (at 25km spatial resolution) over ~25 years (1992–2015) and assess their recent changes both in terms of climate variability and anthropogenic pressure. For large river such as the Amazon, the Ganges-Brahmaputra (G-B) or the Congo, we further combined our surface water extent estimates with hundreds of radar altimeter-derived water level time-series and DEM data to derive the spatio-temporal variability of surface freshwater storage (SWS). Over the Amazon for instance, we show that the annual amplitude of SWS variations is of ~1,200km3 and contributes to ~50% of the Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE)-derived total water storage variations (TWS). During the 2005 exceptional drought, we estimate that the SWS deficit over the entire Amazon basin in October was about 70% as compared to other years. While over G-B we found similar contributions of mean annual variation in SWS to TWS as for the Amazon, over the Congo this contribution is smaller, around 20%. Over the Amazon, the SSW variations are then used to decompose the GRACE-derived TWS and to isolate the variations groundwater storage and show that it contribute to ~30% of GRACE-derived (TWS). Additionally, using radar altimetry observations, we quantify for these large rivers their long term discharge, providing an unprecedented sources of information on the dynamic of the fresh water fluxes to the ocean. We will illustrate the impacts of G-B and Irrawaddy rivers on the Bay of Bengal ocean dynamic. Finally, we will discuss the future of hydrology from space with the launch in 2022 of the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT, NASA-CNES) satellite, which in synergy with the current deployment of the COPERNICUS Sentinel program, will offer an unprecedented view of continental freshwater dynamic on Earth. Short bio - Dr Fabrice Papa is a research Director at the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD-LEGOS, France) and has focused his research on satellite remote sensing of the Earth and its application to study the global water cycle. Welcome! Study finds airborne microplastics can impact climate change Airborne microplastics may have a minor cooling effect on the climate by reflecting solar radiation, according to a modelling study of the direct global climate effects of airborne microplastics, published in Nature. However, as plastic continues to accumulate in the Earth’s environment, a stronger climate effect could be exerted in the future. ATMO-ACCESS 1st call is now open! [https://mcusercontent.com/4851479f00532c922d30788bb/images/2d40441f-2266-2d2e-2acd-218fd0232569.png] In this first call, all ATMO-ACCESS facilities will be eligible, the call topic will be open and access modalities will be unrestricted. Nevertheless, a key goal of the ATMO-ACCESS project is to explore and test modalities of access to eventually identify an optimum sustainable access model. Whilst not essential, in the spirit of ATMO-ACCESS, and in preparation for future calls, innovative modes of access are particularly encouraged. Examples of such novel access proposals could include, but are not limited to: * combinations of remote and physical access * combinations of training and scientific delivery / innovation * cross-disciplinary access from beyond atmospheric science * simultaneous or sequential access to multiple facilities * simultaneous access by users from multiple sectors * piloting of use of facilities for novel purposes * ATMO platforms offering access for the first time Owing to continued and varied restrictions in response to COVID-19 measures it is understood that there may still be constraints on physical mobility; it may be advisable to consider remote or hybrid access contingencies where appropriate. Timeline of the call : Publication date: October 28, 2021 Proposal deadline: January 28, 2022 Access period: December 2021-December 2022 Interested yet? The available facilities, eligibility and application process can be found on the ATMO-ACCESS website: Find Out More Do not hesitate to contact the ATMO-ACCESS TNA team at tna at atmo-access.eu for any possible questions or further assistance. Welcome! Preparations in Kulturhuset Stadsteatern and the COP26 hub The UN Climate Change Conference COP26 is being held in Glasgow from October 31 to November 12. The ambitions of this conference are for world leaders to negotiate emissions reductions targets that will limit global warming to 1.5 degrees, measures to protect communities and natural habitats adversely affected by climate damage, mobilization of climate finance and the rulebook needed to make the Paris Agreement operational. In a partnership with Kulturhuset and the International Cryosphere Climate Initiative (ICCI), we have set up a COP26 hub on the groundfloor of Kulturhuset Stadsteatern, Sergels torg, which will be open throughout the conference. On location visitors get the chance to drop in and ask climate-related questions to Bolin Centre members and to see a photo exhibition.Throughout the conference, we will livestream from ICCI's cryosphere pavilion in Glasgow. Each day will have a daily host in Kulturhuset - Alasdair Skelton, Nina Kirchner and Gustaf Hugelius. Ingeborg Pay at ICCI will also join. If you are interested to take part in the COP26 hub, please contact Alasdair Skelton (mailto:alasdair.skelton at geo.su.se) , Magnus Atterfors (mailto:magnus.atterfors at su.se) or Laila Islamovic (mailto:laila.islamovic at su.se) .
