Kind regards, Anna Lewinschal --------------------------------------- PhD Anna Lewinschal Scientific programmer Department of Meteorology Deputy Modelling Coordinator Bolin Centre for Climate Research Stockholm University ________________________________ From: Hamish Struthers Sent: 02 February 2022 11:16 To: Anna Lewinschal Subject: survey re. ESMVal tool Hej Anna I have been asked to circulate a survey regarding the use of the ESMVal tool (below). Note the deadline should be extended. If you could circulate it to your network that would be greatly appreciated. Tack Hamish Dear Nordic colleague, Researchers often use ad-hoc computer scripts to analyze and evaluate their model simulation data. This often leads to redundant work, when other tools may already provide some (or all) of the functionality. Using such widely used tools will also help to make your data FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable). One such tool is ESMValTool, which is used for understanding and evaluating Earth System Models (ESM). The ESMValTool provides a collection of diagnostics for analyzing different ESMs. Its main focus is the CMIP output data which can be easily downloaded and analyzed using this tool. Additionally, the tool is designed to allow the easy addition of new analyzes and diagnostics by providing basic functionality to handle the ESM data. In NeIC-NICEST2 project we have some funding for transforming existing diagnostics into ESMValTool for the Nordic regions. We are now looking for suggestions on which diagnostics would be important in the Nordics. These can be small code snippets or references to published papers. We are gathering information on diagnostics and the usage of the ESMValTool and, therefore, ask you to please fill out the following google form. As we are also interested in usage statistics in general, we ask you to fill out the questionnaire even if you are not able to share diagnostics. Please fill out this form by 4.2.2022: https://forms.gle/AxS7apMXKw6Po5iu5 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I am renting out two from three rooms to serious individuals (e.g. postdoc, long-term guest researcher) in my house, available on March 1st, with shared usage of over 100m2 common space including two bathrooms, kitchen, dining corner-living room, on a 1700m2 property. The house was built in 2015-2016 in a very sustainable and carbon-neutral way using almost entirely natural products: wood, straw insulation, clay plaster, a slate roof, and standing on a foam glass (recycled glass) base. Heating is mainly done using a wood-fired mass oven (using local wood), besides floor and wall heating. Hot water from solar panels (summer). The house is well insulated and heating (electricity) costs relatively low. The house lies on Tranholmen, an idyllic skärgården island without motorized traffic, yet lying very close to the city in between Lidingö and Norra Djurgården, with a regular ferry connection (taking 10 min) to Ropsten (6am-11pm). In winter (until April 15) there is a walking bridge crossing a 100m sound to Stocksund (Danderyd), allowing a 20 min bike ride to SU, and you can always get back home via that route even in summer using a small row boat. Beaches, a common sauna and newly renovated tennis court stand at your disposal as well, as well as a very friendly village-like neighbourhood. Here a (little outdated) airbnb profile to get an impression: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/21837323 And I also attach an article ‘Kloka Hem’ that was published soon after the house was finished. You will share the house with myself and the other renter(s), however I will be away approximately half of the time. Renting two rooms is possible. Gardening and interest to help out in and around the house (e.g. grass clipping, culturing your own veggies, chopping some wood for the fireplace) is welcome, but not a requirement. The rent is 8000 resp. 8500 SEK single occupancy 6500 (smallest), 7500 (somewhat larger with roof window), 9000 (double bedroom single occupancy) double occupancy : double bedroom: 11,000 (in this case the other room costs 500 less) double + smallest (e.g. as office, or if you have a single child): 17,000. Note that you share the rest of whole house and garden, including internet, water, garbage collection etc, but excluding (shared) electricity use. Please contact me if you are interested, and share to anyone who might be. rienk.smittenberg at geo.su.se -Rienk PS Anyone interested in ecological and sustainable building can contact me as well. Our ultimate goal is to define the adaptation necessary to address climate risks related to these cycles and guide policy towards their mitigation. For this task, we rely on field- and space-based observations, modelling, monitoring, and experiments on land, in the ocean, and the atmosphere. Aim of the call: Research related to the goal of the unit. Potential projects: Fieldwork, sampling, analyses, equipment, cost related to research assistantship, data processing, conferences, workshops or visits of external researchers. The funds can also co-fund and reinforce projects funded by other RAs if added value and RA2 relevance can be demonstrated. Available funding: The total budget of the call is approximately 400,000 SEK. The budget for proposed projects should be no more than 80,000 SEK. Eligible applicants: The main applicant should be a member of RA2 (Old RA3 or RA4) and be employed or sitting at SU, KTH or SMHI. For membership, https://bolin.su.se/about-us/bolin-researchers/join-the-bolin-centre. Format of proposals: The competitive proposal should fit within a maximum of two pages and contain: 1) Project background and motivation, 2) Description of relevance for RA3, 3) Project plan, 4) expected output and 5) budget. Font Times New Roman 10, single-spaced. No CV:s or publication lists are to be submitted. Funds: Funds not utilized for financing activities before March 31, 2023, shall be repaid to the Bolin Center. Please inform us if you have submitted the same proposal to the call of another Research Area. Evaluation: Proposals will be evaluated based on (a) scientific quality, (b) relevance to the scope of RA3 and (c) effort to build new collaborations within the Bolin Centre. Submission: Send proposals as a single pdf file to fernando.jaramillo at natgeo.su.se at the latest on March 18, 2022. Decisions will be announced in mid-April. New study sheds light on the ‘molecular dark matter’ of polluted air Airborne fine particular matter (PM) is a major component of air pollution that impacts global climate and leads to millions of premature deaths globally every year. Yet its molecular composition remains largely unknown. Now, a new study by researchers at the Department of Environmental Science and colleagues from India and the Maldives have proposed molecular structures of over ten thousand organic compounds detected in PM originating from regions of the Indian subcontinent. The novel analytical and computational approaches employed in the study could help scientists to better understand global air pollution sources, climate impacts, and health effects.
