Happy New Year! This is a gentle reminder to submit contributions to the session CR4.3/OS1 "Ice shelves and tidewater glaciers - dynamics, interactions, observations, modelling" at the EGU General Assembly 2022 that will take place in Vienna on 3-8 April 2022. The deadline for abstract submission is this Wednesday, 12 January 2022, 13:00 CET. Ice shelves and tidewater glaciers are sensitive elements of the climate system. Sandwiched between atmosphere and ocean, they are vulnerable to changes in either. The recent disintegration of ice shelves such as Larsen B and Wilkins on the Antarctic Peninsula, current thinning of the ice shelves in the Amundsen Sea sector of West Antarctica, and the recent accelerations of many of Greenland's tidewater glaciers provide evidence of the rapidity with which those systems can respond. Changes in marine-terminating outlets appear to be intimately linked with acceleration and thinning of the ice sheets inland of the grounding line, with immediate consequences for global sea level. Studies of the dynamics and structure of the ice sheets' marine termini and their interactions with atmosphere and ocean are the key to improving our understanding of their response to climate forcing and of their buttressing role for ice streams. The main themes of this session are the dynamics of ice shelves and tidewater glaciers and their interaction with the ocean, atmosphere and the inland ice, including grounding line dynamics. The session includes studies on related processes such as calving, ice fracture, rifting and mass balance, as well as theoretical descriptions of mechanical and thermodynamic processes. We seek contributions both from numerical modelling of ice shelves and tidewater glaciers, including their oceanic and atmospheric environments, and from observational studies of those systems, including glaciological and oceanographic field measurements, as well as remote sensing and laboratory studies. The session site with the abstract submission link can be found at: https://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU22/session/42523 We are looking forward to your exiting contributions from the Bolin Centre! Greetings from the new Co-directors Dear members of the Bolin Centre, Happy new year 2022 – hopefully it has started well for you all! We are excited to step in as the new directors of the Bolin Centre. It is humbling to explore the breadth of the excellent research, education and outreach that is going on! We look forward to learning more about the work that you do, and helping to form our path into the future together. We hope that this path will be filled with excellent research, endless opportunities to learn, and new fruitful connections. In many ways, 2022 will be an intermediate year for the Bolin Centre, during which the foundation of the upcoming years will be laid. During this year, we seek to update the Bolin Centre strategy, and consolidate the structure and the scientific core of the Centre together with you – exploring and finding new exciting questions to tackle. We believe that this will eventually also enable the Bolin Centre to strengthen its links to the key stakeholders – to respond to the unprecedented societal momentum for understanding the climate, and minimizing our negative impacts on the planet we call our home. Looking forward to working with you in the coming years! Ilona (ilona.riipinen at aces.su.se) and Gustaf (gustaf.hugelius at natgeo.su.se) New staff member The Bolin Centre welcomes Sara Gershagen to the adminitrative team. URL: From rienk.smittenberg at geo.su.se Mon Jan 31 08:59:34 2022 From: rienk.smittenberg at geo.su.se (Rienk Smittenberg) Date: Mon, 31 Jan 2022 07:59:34 +0000 Subject: [Bolincentret-at-su.se] rooms for rent March 1st Message-ID: Dear Bolin Centre colleagues I am renting out two rooms to two serious individuals (e.g. postdoc, long-term guest researcher) in my house starting March 1st, with shared usage of over 100m2 common space including two bathrooms, kitchen, dining corner-living room, on a 1700m2 property. The house was built in 2015-2016 in a very sustainable and carbon-neutral way using almost entirely natural products: wood, straw insulation, clay plaster, a slate roof, and standing on a foam glass (recycled glass) base. Heating is mainly done using a wood-fired mass oven (using local wood), besides floor and wall heating. Hot water from solar panels (summer). The house is well insulated and heating (electricity) costs relatively low. The house lies on Tranholmen, an idyllic skärgården island without motorized traffic, yet lying very close to the city in between Lidingö and Norra Djurgården, with a regular ferry connection (taking 10 min) to Ropsten (6am-11pm). In winter (until April 15) there is a walking bridge crossing a 100m sound to Stocksund (Danderyd), allowing a 20 min bike ride to SU, and you can always get back home via that route even in summer using a small row boat. Beaches, a common sauna and newly renovated tennis court stand at your disposal as well, as well as a very friendly village-like neighbourhood. Here a (little outdated) airbnb profile to get an impression: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/21837323 And I also attach an article ‘Kloka Hem’ that was published soon after the house was finished. You will share the house with myself and the other renter, however I will be away approximately half of the time. Renting both rooms is possible. Renting the third larger bedroom that I plan to use myself is negiotiable. Gardening and interest to help out in and around the house (e.g. grass clipping, culturing your own veggies, chopping some wood for the fireplace) is welcome, but not a requirement. The rent is 8000 resp. 8500 SEK for the rooms that differ a little in size and liveability (but you share the whole house and garden), including internet, water, garbage collection etc, but excluding (shared) electricity use. Please contact me if you are interested, and share to anyone who might be. rienk.smittenberg at geo.su.se -Rienk PS Anyone interested in ecological and sustainable building can contact me as well.
