New TRS master student grant
During the workshop, the new TRS student grant will be presented. The grant will be available for master students and its purpose is to cover field work cost at TRS for a master thesis. The grant will 20,000 SEK and will be awarded one student a year, starting 2023. From this grant, travels to and from TRS, accommodation at TRS and any possible additional field work cost can be covered. All master students are eligible to apply, regardless of research topic, or home university.

21st International Swiss Climate Summer School 2023 “Climate-Water-Energy-Food-Nexus"

The network of leading Swiss institutions in climate research and education invites young scientists to join high-​profile climate researchers in southern Switzerland for keynote lectures, workshops, and poster sessions on the occasion of the 21st Swiss Climate Summer School 2023.

The 21st International Swiss Climate Summer School focuses on the theme “Climate-​Water-Energy-Food-Nexus”. The purpose of this highly interdisciplinary summer school is to bring early stage researchers in touch with established scientists from different disciplines to bridge the topic of climate change with sustainable development goals strongly focusing on social, economic, and humanity aspects. The main questions to be addressed in the keynote lectures and discussed in smaller groups within the planned workshops are:

  *   What is the impact of the changing climate on the water, energy and food systems?
  *   What is the adaptation potential of the water, energy and food systems coping with climate stress?
  *   How can we create innovation across the climate, water, energy, and food systems for them to be co-​beneficial for sustainable development goals and transformation towards a net zero society?
  *   How can achieving climate mitigation and adaptation goals have positive spill-​overs on the water, energy and food systems?
  *   What are the ethical and societal implications when we take the nexus approach seriously and consider the climate, water, energy, and food systems together?

Owing to the highly interdisciplinary nature of the topic, the proposed summer school addresses early stage researchers from the climate and Earth system sciences to food, agriculture, social, political, and economic sciences, as well as humanities. The one-​week summer school is organised akin to a conference and is structured around keynote lectures by internationally renowned experts with ample time for discussions, poster sessions, workshops, and concluding workshop summaries, as well as a panel discussion that involves lecturers and participants. All summer school participants are expected to present a poster of their research to discuss their own research with the other participants.

The summer school is organised back-​to-back with the ETH Zurich summer school “Energy Technology, Policy and Politics: How can we reach a net zero GHG emissions energy supply?” from 27 August – 1 September 2023 allowing interested participants to expand their knowledge on both the complex nature of the climate-​energy-food system and the necessary energy transition towards a net zero society. I am happy to announce I will be offering the Land Change Modeling Course for PhD students in January 2023 (20 hours, 1.5 credits) at the Stockholm Resilience Centre/ Stockholm University (in person).

Please see the complete syllabus and dates in the document attached. It is open to students at SU and other Universities.

The course is a condensed version of the discipline I teach in the Earth System Science Program at INPE (CST 401).  In the course, we combine lectures about land change processes and practical exercises about spatially-explicit modelling and scenario building. The student will develop a final project in his/her study area.

Dear colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention to Session P01 General Topics in Oceanography (physics and biogeochemistry) at the assembly of the International Association of the Physical Sciences of the Ocean (IAPSO), as part of the 28th general assembly of the International Union of Geodesy ans Geophysics (IUGG). The IUGG will be held 11-20 July 2023 in Berlin, Germany. The deadline for abstract submission is 14 February 2023.

Description:
This symposium welcomes presentations of new research results in physical and biogeochemical oceanography not included in the other symposia. It explores oceanic processes of global relevance and those specific to different regions of the ocean, such as tropical, subtropical, subpolar, polar, marginal, and coastal seas. Relevant processes include water mass formation and interactions, large-scale and meso-scale circulations, interactions with other Earth system components (land, seafloor, atmosphere, and cryosphere), distribution and cycling of chemical elements and compounds, or pollution. Variability on different space and time scales will be considered and methodological approaches will range from in situ, autonomous, and satellite observations to numerical and laboratory studies.

Dear all,

CBEES has recently opened a call for applications for the position of a postdoctoral scholar with a specialisation in water/marine issues.

The duties of a postdoctoral research fellow primarily include research. They may also include the development of research activities and participation in the academic community through work as a reviewer, external expert or lecturer. Some teaching may be included in these duties but at no more than 20 per cent of the total level of employment. Administrative duties may also be included in the position (such as organising conferences or workshops).

We are particularly looking for applicants who specialise in “water/marine issues”, which could mean the environment and sustainability in the Baltic Sea region, maritime archaeology, climate change or transportation issues in the Baltic Sea region.

Application deadline: 31/12-2022
