Pytroll is an easy to use, modular, free and open source python framework for the processing of earth observation satellite data. The initiative was started in 2009 by DMI and SMHI as a collaboration to pool human resources towards improving our 24/7 operational production. However, it has now become much more than that, and has turned into an open community project that serves both operational users and researchers from public institutions, actors of the private sector and individuals alike. In this talk, we will present some of the features and capabilities provided by the Pytroll tools, the libraries they are build upon, and the design principles of the framework. But more than technical, this talk will also address the challenges of getting a public open-source project with more than 500 users and 50 contributors to become a thriving community. In the practical part of the Pytroll seminar, we will go through multiple exercises to experiment loading and processing satellite data (imager sensors) from geostationary and polar-orbiting satellite. In particular we will learn how to load data, locate metadata, generate composites, and resample data. The participants are expected to perform the exercises on their own computer, where a recent version of conda and python (>= 3.8) should be available. The tutorial material is provided as jupyter notebooks, so having jupyter installed in advance is recommended. This hands-on tutorial is planned to take about two hours. The report has been launched every year since 2017 at the climate COP, with participation of the UNFCCC Executive Secretary. This joint initiative of Future Earth, The Earth League, and The World Climate Research Programme, is a collective effort to support the diffusion of the most relevant and up-to-date climate change science to policymakers, negotiators, and the general public. We are seeking input from researchers across all disciplines working with issues related to climate change. We welcome your contribution by answering this brief questionnaire by February 17. The core of the questionnaire is this: Give us your pitch: What is a key recent advance in climate change research that you think should be highlighted for policymakers? These inputs will be discussed and prioritized by the Editorial Board, leading to a final list of 10 insights. Join the effort: Would you be interested in being part of one of the topic-expert teams (as a co-author) responsible for one of the selected insights? Can you suggest other experts as potential authors? To compose the 10 topic-expert teams, the Editorial Board will select from the nominations based on relevant expertise, scientific excellence, and diversity. All invited experts are recognized as co-authors of the peer-reviewed paper and the policy report. Fee free to forward this email to interested colleagues. I hope to see many of you there for stimulating discussions on the latest in Arctic Ocean research. Agatha Our Arctic session details are: *JP02 Arctic Ocean Physics and Biochemistry in a Changing Climate (IAPSO, IACS)* *Lead-Convener*: Agatha de Boer (Sweden, IAPSO) *Co-Convener*s: Sheldon Bacon (UK, IAPSO), Zoe Koening (Norway, IAPSO), Martin Vancoppenolle (France, IACS), Igor Polyakov (USA, IAPSO), *Description* The United Nations declared Climate Change as the defining challenge of our time. The most vulnerable region on Earth is the Arctic, which is warming at double the global mean rate. Given the Arctic’s front line importance, a large scientific investment has recently been made to understand and predict the Arctic Ocean’s heat content, freshwater content, and its sea-ice state. Arctic modelling efforts have been improved and new observations have been added from ship data, moorings, and satellites. Nevertheless, models have difficulty to simulate the Arctic’s climate state - simulations of the sea ice cover in recent decades tend to underestimate the observed rapid decline and predictions of when the Arctic will be ice-free vary widely. In order to meet the challenges of the future, we may need to accelerate progress by true trans-disciplinary science. Thus, we invite abstracts covering observations, theory, and modelling of the physics and biochemistry of the ocean and sea ice in the Arctic Ocean and its neighbouring seas. Abstracts are also encouraged across a large time frame, from past Arctic Ocean states, to the present state, as well as predictions of the future. Abstract that cover more than one of these aspects are particularly welcome. -- Vice-president of the International Association of the Physical Sciences of the Ocean (IAPSO) Section Editor for PLOS-Climate Study director of the Bolin Center Masters Program in Climate Science Associate professor in physical oceanography and paleoclimatology Department of Geological Sciences and Bolin Center for Climate Research Stockholm University, Stockholm, 106 91, Sweden https://www.su.se/english/profiles/adebo-1.189368 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It has been a pleasure and privilege to be part of the Bolin Centre of Climate Research for the last 11 years, and I hope that the Centre will keep playing a meaningful role in bringing together and supporting climate scientists, and promoting climate research and outreach in the broadest sense. This is now needed more than ever given the current political situation in Sweden. Resigning from SU also means that I do not need a place to live in Sweden anymore, yet I still have a house. There are already two nice persons living there, Ella and Ryan, and they now look for a third housemate. Please see the text below, also in the attached. Please approach either Ella or Ryan or myself. Hälsningar Rienk Smittenberg *********** Dr. Rienk Smittenberg formerly Associate Professor in Isotope Organic Geochemistry Department of Geological Sciences Stockholm University SE-106 91 Stockholm Sweden my old SU email still works, but you can reach me always at smittenberg at gmail.com *********** We are looking for a third person to join live in a spacious house with a large garden on Tranholmen - a car-free island close to central Stockholm. The ~9m2 room is furnished (with a single bed) but there is shared usage of over 100m2 of common space including two bathrooms, a kitchen, and a dining corner and living room, all sitting on a 1700m2 property. The house was built in 2015-2016 in a very sustainable and carbon-neutral way using almost entirely natural products: wood, straw insulation, clay plaster, a slate roof, and standing on a foam glass (recycled glass) base. Heating is done using a wood-fired mass, besides floor and wall heating. Hot water from solar panels (summer). The house is well insulated and heating (electricity) costs very low compared to most other houses of the same size. The house lies on Tranholmen (www.tranholmen.com), an idyllic skärgården island without motorized traffic, lying very close to the city between Lidingö and Norra Djurgården, with a regular ferry connection (taking 10 min) to Ropsten (6:45am-11pm). In winter (from November 1st to April 15th, but this year possibly until early June), there is a walking bridge crossing a 100m strait to Stocksund (Danderyd), allowing a ca. 20 min bike ride to SU. During the summer half year the bridge is removed, but you can always get back home from Ropsten on the ferry, or from Svanholmsparken/Stocksund using either the own row boat, or one of the 7 communal row boats shared among the population of Tranholmen. Beaches and a communal sauna stand at your disposal as well, like a friendly village-like neighborhood. There is also a large barn (‘logen’) for island activities, and the midsommar festivities take place in a traditional style. The house has large tall windows facing south, which provides plenty of light and a spacious garden surrounded by trees. See link for (somewhat outdated) pictures (the interior has been changed somewhat and the garden is greener): https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/21837323 The rent is 7500 SEK, excluding electricity, water, internet, which costs need to be shared. We are looking for a responsible, friendly, and social housemate who appreciates that things are kept tidy, takes care of plants, enjoys gardening and possibly wood chopping for the winter stock, and who appreciates that car-free living in a green and local environment is a natural way to keep a little more in shape. We who live in the house are Ella and Ryan. Ella: Swedish girl in her prime 29th year (who wishes to be 24). Works in digital strategy, likes plants, good food and has a new hobby every month. Right now it's pottery. Ryan: 27 year-old postdoctoral fellow at SU, works in astronomy and climate science, and is discovering Swedish life little by little. We are looking for someone to move in by April 1st latest; the room will be available from the second week of March, If you are interested or have any questions, send an email to ryan.boukrouche at gmail.com and/or earenlind at gmail.com Best regards, Ella & Ryan -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... But there is much more data out there that needs to be digitized and homogenized. Multivariate historical station data will be crucial to conduct more detailed analysis of climate variability and change on longer timescales and for improving gridded datasets including data assimilation products extending back to the 19th or even 18th century. Such long data is also important to better calibrate climate proxy-reconstructions with data reaching back before humans started to heavily mess up our atmosphere and climate. SMHI is working on this important task and Research Theme 3 "Past Climates" is looking into ways to increase support for this endeavour. Erik Engström (SMHI) invites all interested in this topic to participate online in the seminar hosted as SMHI: Title: Global Historical Climate Database - HCLIM and homogenisation at SMHI Speaker 1: Dr. Elin Lundstad (University of Bern, Switzerland) about her work with the global dataset HCLIM Speaker 2: Dr. Magnus Joelsson (SMHI) about his development of the homogenisation tool HOMER-BART and the homogenisation of the Swedish monthly mean temperature data Date: Thursday, 2 March 2023 Time: 13.00 - 15.00 Location: Online, https://my.meetu.se/meet/60849906 Abstract: There is a growing need for past weather and climate data to support science and decision-making. This presentation describes the compilation and the construction of global monthly instrumental climate data with a focus on the 18th and early 19th centuries. This database provides early instrumental data, and it is multivariable (air temperature, pressure, precipitation sum, number of precipitation days) are recovered for thousands of locations around the world for that encompasses a substantial body of the known early instrumental time series. Instrumental meteorological measurements from periods prior to the start of national weather services are designated "early instrumental data". Much of the data is taken from repositories we know (GHCN, ISTI, CRUTEM, Berkeley Earth, HISTALP). In addition, many of these stations have not been digitized before. It ends up in one database with the same format, so it is easy to use the data with a good overview of metadata. The dataset contains series compiled from existing databases that start before 1890 (though continuing to the present) as well as a large amount of newly rescued data. The first record is from 1586. All series underwent a quality control procedure and subdaily series were processed to monthly mean values. An inventory was compiled, and the collection was deduplicated based on coordinates and mutual correlations. The data are provided in a common format accompanied by the inventory. The collection totals 12452 meteorological records in 118 countries. The data can be used for climate reconstructions and analyses. It is the most comprehensive global monthly climate dataset for the preindustrial period. Analysis of climate data require long homogeneous time series. Long observational series are rarely homogeneous due to some discontinuity in the measurements or the surrounding. Homogenisation is the process of adjusting for these discontinuities and thereby making all observations of a time series comparable from a climatological perspective. A commonly used homogenisation tool is HOMER, an interactive homogenisation tool. To enable operational use of HOMER, HOMER has been automated via the script Bart. Bart has been employed in the homogenisation of monthly mean temperature dataset of SMHI with observations from 1859 through 2022.
