These topics are intensively debated in public media and elsewhere. These discussions also take place within academia, although generally to a lesser extent in organized forms. Since these are very important topics, and where different viewpoints and opinions are prevalent, this panel dialogue intents to investigate these issues from different perspectives. The aim of this cross-faculty and cross-departmental initiative is to stimulate dialogue and to increase awareness of the rationales behind different viewpoints. The dialogue will be held in Swedish, and it will not be possible to participate remotely. We welcome everyone within academia with an interest in these issues, and we hope for some fruitful exchanges of ideas and perspective. Today (Thursday the 14th) at 14:00 in Nordenskiöldsalen the ACES Seminar Series 2023-2024 will start with a seminar by Urich Pöschl. Multiphase processes influencing climate and health in the Anthropocene Ulrich Pöschl Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, Mainz, Germany 14 – 15, Nordenskiöldsalen Host: Claudia Mohr Bio: Ulrich Pöschl is director at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry and professor at the Johannes Gutenberg University (JGU) in Mainz, Germany. He studied chemistry at the Technical University of Graz and was postdoctoral researcher, group leader, and university lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Departments of Chemistry and of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences; the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (MPIC), Atmospheric Chemistry and Biogeochemistry Departments; and the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Institute of Hydrochemistry. Among other internationally leading scientists, Pöschl worked with the Nobel laureates Paul Crutzen and Mario Molina. Abstract: Multiphase processes involving gases, liquids, and solid or semi-solid matter play important roles in the Earth system as well as in living organisms. Some of these processes are particularly important for climate change and public health in the Anthropocene, i.e., in the current era of globally pervasive and rapidly increasing influence of human activity on planet Earth. For example, the interplay of water vapor with aerosol particles influences the formation of clouds and precipitation, which are essential for the Earth’s energy balance and hydrological cycle. Moreover, gaseous pollutants and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) can generate reactive oxygen and nitrogen species causing oxidative stress, inflammation, and chemical modifications of proteins and other biomolecules, which may lead to non-communicable respiratory, cardiovascular, and allergic diseases. Recent advances in the investigation and elucidation of multiphase processes including heterogeneous chemical reactions and interfacial mass transport will be outlined and discussed. In reality, the realised future trajectory will be much less smooth of course and the current year is perhaps a good example for that. A relevant part of near- to mid-term future uncertainty regarding the timing and magnitude for crossing certain warming levels or potential tipping points results from random unforced variability on top of the forced changes. Unfortunately, the nature of these internal variations and, e.g., their state-dependency, frequency spectra and potential drivers, are not that well studied. The following presentation may hence be interesting for a broad audience dealing with climate variability and change including impacts studies on different timescales. Title: Forced vs. unforced multi-centennial variability in climate model simulations Speaker: Prof. Qiong Zhang, Department of Physical Geography, Stockholm University Time: 11 am Stockholm time Where: Zoom Meeting https://zoom.us/j/98630590001?pwd=cFhoRllra1JMVkpyQWlmaVphOEZVUT09 Meeting ID: 986 3059 0001 Passcode: 096279 The meeting will open at 10:45 CEST. The presentation will be followed by a discussion of planned new model-intercomparison projects PMIP and CMIP7 where you can bring up own ideas as well. I hope to see many of you online tomorrow. Message-ID: <7821edabe6f94f938cfcf462c75eef9c@natgeo.su.se> Bolin RT2 seminar series EVENT Date: Wednesday, 11 October 2023 Time: 14.00 – 15.00 Venue: DeGeer lecture hall, Geoscience building Delta-X: How can deltas survive a century of rising seas? Cathleen Jones, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology Deltas around the world are in peril drowning, cut off from up-river sediment input and facing rising sea levels. However, when examined in detail, determination of which parts of a delta will drown depends upon the details of the local geomorphology, hydrology, and ecology. The cross-disciplinary Delta-X mission was funded by NASA to investigate the connections between the complex processes controlling soil accretion within deltaic wetlands through development of calibrated and validated models that account for processes at the hectare scale, the scale on which soil production and sediment deposition vary in a delta. Delta-X uses a combination of airborne remote sensing instruments and in situ data collection to measure sediment distribution, hydrological connectivity, vegetation, and geomorphic variables in the Mississippi River Delta, studying two neighboring basins, one with a prograding delta evolving naturally and the other isolated from sediment input and rapidly losing land. These measurements calibrate and validate hydrodynamic, sediment transport, and organic productivity models at the 10-30 m scale, which are now being combined to forecast long-term sustainability. This talk will present an overview of the mission, data, and models plus results to date from the Delta-X project team. Short bio Cathleen Jones is a Senior Research Scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. Her research is focused on using radar to identify, monitor, and study natural and man-made hazards, and includes development of methods for tracking and characterizing oil slicks, measuring subsidence in deltas, and monitoring levees, dams, and aqueducts. She is the Deputy Principal Investigator of the NASA Delta-X mission, which studies the processes controlling land loss in the Mississippi River Delta. She is also the Science Team Applications Lead for NASA’s upcoming NISAR mission, which will image nearly all the Earth’s land surface every 12 days, providing the data to the public free of charge. We aim to study the coupled water and biogeochemical cycles and their interactions with climate and society over multiple spatial and temporal scales. Our ultimate goal is to define the adaptation necessary to address climate risks related to these cycles and guide policy towards their mitigation. For this task, we rely on field- and space-based observations, modelling, monitoring, and experiments on land, the ocean, and the atmosphere. Aim of the call: Research related to the goal of the unit. Potential projects: Fieldwork, sampling, analyses, equipment, costs related to research assistantship, data processing, visits of external researchers, organization of workshops, and, to a lesser degree, attendance to conferences by Bolin Researchers. The funds can also co-fund and reinforce projects funded by other RTs if added value and RT2 relevance can be demonstrated. Available funding: The total budget of the call is approximately 400,000 SEK. The budget for proposed projects should be no more than 80,000 SEK. Eligibility: The main applicant should be a member of RT2 and be employed at SU, KTH or SMHI. For membership, https://bolin.su.se/about-us/bolin-researchers/join-the-bolin-centre. Format of proposals: The competitive proposal should fit within a maximum of two pages and contain 1) Project background and motivation, 2) Description of relevance for RT2, 3) Project plan, 4) expected output and 5) budget. Font Times New Roman 10, single-spaced. No CVs or publication lists are to be submitted. Funds: Funds not utilized for financing activities before December 31, 2024, shall be repaid to the Bolin Centre. Please inform us if you have submitted the same proposal to the call for another research theme. Evaluation: Proposals will be evaluated based on (a) scientific quality, (b) relevance to the scope of RT2 (See Bolin Strategic Plan https://www.su.se/bolin-centre-for-climate-research/about-the-centre/organisation); (c) novelty, and (d) effort to build new collaborations within the Bolin Centre. Submission: Send proposals as a single PDF file to fernando.jaramillo at natgeo.su.se or volker.bruchert at geo.su.se by October 31, 2023. Decisions will be announced before Christmas. Please name the file “firstname_lastname_RT2_2023”. Looking forward to receiving your applications, Volker and Fernando FERNANDO JARAMILLO Department of Physical Geography/Baltic Sea Centre Stockholm University, SE-106 91 Stockholm. She got an appointment with Merete Bilde at Aarhus University. She has been working on our great barrier reef restoration project mainly involved in the atmospheric monitoring part as well as been responsible for most of the AMS and CIMS measurements. I am looking for a new postdoc to replace her. The person will be employed initially for a 2 year period with the possibility of extension for another 3 years. The postdoc will be working in a larger team. In the coming year that person will have the opportunity to be responsible to run our monitoring station at Heron Island for 1 month sometimes in March. We plan to repeat these on an annual basis. We hope to have a similar suit of instruments to what we had this year (full particle sizing (1nm – 10um), CCNC, BC, AMS, nitrate CIMS + a PTR-MS run by another group) and we have some interesting results. In addition in the future there will be opportunities to participate in voyages in the Southern Ocean as well as maybe some voyages to the Antarctica. We are building a new 200m2 lab and have got funding to buy 2 more mass specs (HiRes-AMS and a VOCUS-MS) so this would be a good opportunity for a young scientist. I am attaching a detailed description for the postdoc position. There is no add open as I can directly employ this person for 2 years. Note that the position is available from January 2024 or even earlier if the candidate is free. If you know anybody from your department who would be interested please let me know. Also feel free to distribute this to other academics in your department. Thanks in advance.
