From Laila.Islamovic at aces.su.se Wed Apr 3 09:43:18 2024 From: Laila.Islamovic at aces.su.se (Laila Islamovic) Date: Wed, 3 Apr 2024 07:43:18 +0000 Subject: [Bolincentret-at-su.se] Reminder: Registration deadline approaching for the Swedish Climate Symposium Message-ID: <0779cb34c560472eb5c146b6ef9e3dbe@aces.su.se> Dear Bolin Centre members, This is a gentle reminder that there is now less than two weeks left before the registration for the Swedish Climate Symposium closes on 15 April. [logo] Don’t forget to register to the Swedish Climate Symposium 2024! The symposium, taking place on May 15-17, 2024 in Norrköping, invites researchers to submit abstracts for an engaging exploration of climate science and its societal impacts. Organized by SMHI, the Bolin Centre for Climate Research, BECC, and MERGE, it aims to bridge scientific knowledge with practical applications. This event provides a unique platform for scientists to collaborate and address knowledge gaps in climate science. Through plenary and parallel sessions, poster presentations, and networking opportunities, participants will gain valuable insights into Swedish climate research. The symposium facilitates connections among researchers and decision-makers in the political and economic spheres. Excerpts from the programme: The symposium will commence with a remote address by Jim Skea, head of IPCC and a keynote address by Prof. Åsa Persson, Chair of the Swedish Climate Policy Council and Deputy Director of the Stockholm Environment Institute, followed by a panel discussion involving: * Prof. Markku Rummukainen (Lund University) * Prof. Berit Arheimer (SMHI) * Assoc. Prof. Victor Galaz (Stockholm Resilience Centre). Following the opening session, the programme will be arranged in parallel sessions that cover a spectrum of climate topics. Scheduled poster and mingle sessions will be organised, fostering opportunities for scientists to interact, collaborate and forge new contacts. The organisers also work towards sessions to facilitate interaction with decision makers from the political and economic sphere in a Swedish context. The Bolin Centre will co-fund attendance by paying the conference fee for all Bolin Centre members hired at SU or KTH (contact bolin at su.se). Early Career Researchers (PhD-students and Post-docs) can apply for a travel grant to cover train and accommodation expenses through the Bolin Centre Climate Research School (contact carmen.prieto at natgeo.su.se). The symposium programme is available here. Register here by 15 April: https://swedishclimatesymposium.com/registration/ For more information and updates, please visit https://swedishclimatesymposium.com/ If you have any questions, please reach out to us at bolin at su.se Kind regards, ____________________________________ Laila Islamovic Communicator Bolin Centre for Climate Research Department of Environmental Science (ACES) Stockholm University SE-106 91 Stockholm, Sweden Room: V201 Phone: +46 76 695 70 78 laila.islamovic at aces.su.se www.bolin.su.se ___________________________________ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This year's lecture titled "When giants falter: Tipping points in Greenland and Antarctica" is given by Professor Ricarda Winkelmann from the University of Potsdam and PIK. With expertise in climate system analysis and ice dynamics, Professor Winkelmann will delve into critical thresholds of ice-sheet stability and will shed light on the potential impacts of Greenland and Antarctica's ice dynamics on global sea-level rise and climate change. Her insights, gained through extensive research offer a unique perspective on the future of our planet. Abstract: Storing ice volumes of more than 65 meters sea-level equivalent, the ice sheets on Greenland and Antarctica are by far the largest potential source of future sea-level rise. Their stability hence determines the long-term fate of coastal cities and cultural heritage sites around the world. While massive in size, the ice sheets also belong to the most vulnerable parts of the Earth system: Feedbacks between ice, atmosphere, ocean and solid earth give rise to nonlinearities in their response to progressing global warming. Once a critical temperature threshold is crossed, this could lead to self-sustained and potentially irreversible ice loss from Greenland and Antarctica. Here, we review the processes behind these dynamic instabilities, discuss the risk of crossing ice-sheet tipping points in the near future, and explore the resulting impacts on sea-level rise and our global climate – not just for this century, but for the next millennia and beyond. Our results illustrate how near-term greenhouse-gas emissions will lead to long-term impacts that change the face of our planet. This calls for the need to redefine inter-generational climate responsibility, from near-term human impacts to long-term commitments that determine livability on Earth. -->The Bert Bolin Climate Lecture is aimed at high-school students and the general public, however you are all more than welcome to attend by registering here: https://su.powerinit.com/Data/Event/EventTemplates/2602/?EventId=2932 Date: Wednesday 8 May 2024 Time: 14.00 – 15.00 Location: Beijersalen, KVA – The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Lilla Frescativägen 4 (and Zoom) _________________________________________ -->The Bert Bolin Science Seminar, aimed at the research community, will take place on the same day but in a different venue, you do not have to register for this seminar: Date: Wednesday 8 May 2024 Time: 10.00 – 11.00 Location: DeGeersalen, Geosciencesbuilding at Stockholm university We hope to see you there! Where: Högbomsalen When: Thursday April 25th at 14:00 Title: Insights into the polar biogenic sulfur cycle from field and laboratory studies Abstract: Marine biogenic sulfur is an important natural source aerosol, especially over remote polar oceans where other aerosol sources can be limited. A key question is how emissions, and subsequent chemistry, of marine reduced sulfur impact the natural aerosol background in both pre-industrial and present-day atmospheres. In this presentation, I will highlight the role of multiphase chemistry for controlling the atmospheric fate of reduced sulfur compounds, and their stable oxidation products. I will discuss laboratory studies of bulk and multiphase ozone reaction kinetics in the context of ambient aerosol and trace gas measurements made at the onset of ice-melt and biological activity in the Atlantic Arctic, during the 2023 ARTofMELT campaign.
