We're currently based in Germany and are looking for an apartment/small house for our family, as soon as possible. Preferably with min. 2 bedrooms, and a commute of < 1 hour to the university. Within biking radius (we're used to somewhat longer distances) would be even better! Any tips are very welcome 😊 A little bit about us: Martijn works on network evaluation of arctic green-house gas fluxes, and I am a terrestrial C cycle modeler. More information is below. If you are interested in attending this workshop, please let me know by 15 March 1) If you would like to attend 2) If yes, if you would like to attend the conference dinner on Wednesday 29 May (it might be free for Bolin Centre members that attend the workshop, if we have enough funding). 3) If you wish to give a short presentation related to your research and to the conference topic. Title: *LIGA: Spatial Patterns of Last Interglacial Arctic climate change. *to be held at *Stockholm University, 29-31 May, 2024* The purpose of this small targeted workshop is to compare spatial patterns of climate change during the Last Interglacial (LIG) with today and based on that investigate to which extent it is or isn't an analog for the future. For example, with different radiative forcing, seasonality, and ice sheets, how was atmospheric circulation different? How did these drivers influence patterns of ocean circulation and sea-ice in the Arctic and Subarctic? Are patterns of LIG warming different from patterns of future Greenhouse warming? To discuss these questions, we invite ~10 external experts, including paleoclimate and future modellers, and experts on Arctic terrestrial, ocean, sea-ice and land-ice proxies. Each invited expert will be asked to give a presentation on some topic related to the workshop theme. Ideally the workshop will lead to a review paper on the subject, but foremost we would like to foster discussions on LIG climate patterns. Questions of spatial comparisons with other interglacials are also of interest. The workshop is designed to overlap with a larger PaleoArc conference held in Stockholm 27-29 May. Specifically, we will join the PaleoArc workshop on our first day (Wednesday 29 May) and also have a joined conference dinner. Our remaining workshop on Thursday-Friday 30-31 May. Best regards, Agatha de Boer, also on behalf of the Bolin Centre workshop organizing team. Here is an excerpt from the thesis abstract: This thesis explores the important role of 'green water' in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to food and poverty in sub-Saharan Africa. It maps current and future water availability, usage, and variability for agriculture in the context of global changes and planetary boundary transgressions. It also models the role of forests in supporting water for agricultural production, and further models water potential for the SDGs, arguing for a green water-centric approach in strategy at both local and global levels. Despite the high advocacy for technological solutions, such as irrigation, rainfed agricultural systems, which account for more than 90% of the region's food production, often remain overlooked. This raises the question of which water sources can be sustainably utilized to meet the Sustainable Development Goals. This thesis investigates the significant role of "green water" in addressing these challenges in agricultural production and ecosystem health in the sub-Saharan African region. Application of models reveal the pronounced role of green water in African forest systems, regional ecosystems, and food production systems in studying these societal sustainability questions,. The study projects a decrease in precipitation recycling with increasing severity of climate change. The results suggests that regions with lower water efficiency per yield production can significantly increase agricultural yield by tapping into green water sources as improving rainwater management systems, even as land-sourced precipitation is projected to decline more than oceanic sources. The thesis argues for adoption of a green water-centric approach to be opted in strategic plans at both local and global levels. Moreover, by capitalizing on green water resources, less developed nations such as sub-Saharan Africa can fulfill their Sustainable Development Goals without the need for significant technological investments and the associated environmental risks. On March 25, Miriam Frankel, editor from London, holds a workshop for researchers at Stockholm University who want to learn how to reach out. Maximum 30 participants. After the workshop, there is an opportunity for individual conversations (10 minutes per person) to discuss article ideas with Miriam Frankel. Registration (no later than March 20) and questions: Contact Per Larsson at the Communications Department, per.larsson at su.se The basic idea behind The Conversation is that researchers write about current events in a popular scientific and interesting manner. The text is free to republish (but not change) for anyone. After the start in 2009, the concept quickly became a success; today there are several regional editions in the world. The European edition is based in London and reaches millions of readers each month, both directly via the site and via republishing on various news sites. Thanks to the membership in the non-profit foundation behind The Conversation, researchers at Stockholm University have the opportunity to receive support to reach an international audience and to practice writing about their research for a wider target group. Methane (CH4) is a strong greenhouse gas with significant implications for climate change. In the Arctic, while wetlands are known CH4 emitters, upland soils constitute a crucial but poorly studied component of the CH4 budget. Carolina Voigt's seminar will present findings from field and laboratory-based studies investigating CH4 uptake in Arctic uplands, shedding light on the spatial and temporal variability, as well as the biogeochemical drivers of this process. Carolina's research explores diverse tundra vegetation types and their role in CH4 uptake, alongside insights into the microbial communities driving this phenomenon. Her findings suggest a complex interplay of abiotic and biotic factors governing CH4 uptake, challenging previous assumptions about its importance in Arctic ecosystems. Little guidance on this is available, although everybody talks about the importance of doing it. Join us in a Global Conversation where members of the SDGCap program (Building Capacity for Sustainable Development in Fragile States) shares their experiences and results of working together to enable multisectoral collaboration in Uganda, Somalia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The seminar is organised by the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Health We look forward to your participation! A chamber choir has presented an innovative proposal to merge science and music in a unique event. They are planning a program where researchers like yourselves would have the opportunity to present their science related to climate, nature, ecosystems, or similar themes for five minutes each. These presentations would be followed by musical performances that complement the scientific content, creating a unique experience for the audience. The proposed concert dates are Saturday, August 31st, and Sunday, September 1st. However, they are open to discussing alternative dates to better accommodate our schedules. This collaboration presents an excellent opportunity for our researchers to share their work with a broader audience in a non-traditional setting, promoting climate science. I encourage you to consider this opportunity and let me know if you are interested in participating. We are seeking 4-5 volunteers, preferably from different areas of expertise, to provide comprehensive coverage of the themes. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions. I look forward to hearing back from you and hopefully exploring this collaboration further. Date: Friday 22 March 2024 Time: 13.00 – 14.00 Location: Högbom lecture hall, Geoscience building. If you want to join by Zoom, please use this link: https://stockholmuniversity.zoom.us/j/61544390741 Methane (CH4) is a strong greenhouse gas with significant implications for climate change.
