font-weight: normal; color: #000000; font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.3;"><div class="linkable editable" tinymce-toolbar="bold italic | bullist numlist link | charmap" tinymce-charmap="[['0187','Länkpil']]"><p>Together with colleagues at Karolinska Institutet, Bolin Centre scientists Alasdair Skelton and Kevin Noone just published an article titled “Lockdown measures which reduced greenhouse gas emissions with little negative impact on quality of life”.</p><p> </p><p>The result of lockdown measures in response to the new Covid-19 virus has been the largest fall ever of greenhouse gas emissions. But which of these measures can be used post-lockdown to sustain at least part of this reduction of emissions?</p><p> </p><p>This exploratory study assessed the change of perceived quality of life among 746 individuals from Stockholm region due to complying to lockdown measures. Increasing the population density of big herbivores in northern high-latitude ecosystems will increase snow density and hence decrease the insulation strength of snow during winter. As a consequence, theoretically 80% of current permafrost-affected soils (<10 m) is projected to remain until 2100 even when assuming a strong warming using the Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5.</p><p> </p><p>Importantly, permafrost temperature is estimated to remain below -4 °C on average after increasing herbivore population density. Such ecosystem management practices would be therefore theoretically an important additional climate change mitigation strategy.
