this years summer school will run from 13-23rd  of june. We are now looking for PhD students who wants to be supervisors for ca 6 students each. You are to design a small lab project related to your own research and manage the lab work for 2 weeks ( little bit less actually halftime for 4 days and full time  for 4 days + taking part in the presentation round the last day).

Included is the responsibility to correct the students report during the fall.

You will get 9.500:- SEK paid and 1.000:- in consumable reimbursement for the group.

Hello all PhD students,


This email is about supervision of pre-university students (often called PRAO/praktik) and the condition under which you can obtain teaching hours for it.


Each year, we get contacted by about a dozen students (age 15-19) who want to come to the Physics department for a few days and get an idea of how it is to be a physicist. They usually get one or two supervisors assigned who can bring them to the lab / design a couple of exercises for them or something similar that gives them a flavour of how the work at the department is done. The students are as a rule enthusiastic about physics and fun to work with.


It is possible for a PhD student who undertakes such supervision to obtain teaching hours, which in turn can be converted into prolongation. The default amount of hours corresponds to 50% of the time you have the student(s), so supervising 1-2 students for a whole week gives 20 hours e.g. The idea is that you can do other work while the students are here and that they don't need to come for 8+ hours a day. If you find yourself spending more time than the default, it is possible to get more hours after discussion with Henning Schmidt.


Since the total amount of teaching hours allocated for this kind of activity is not unlimited, we need to coordinate our efforts. So, if you are interested in supervision, please email me back so I can put you on a list over potential supervisors. This list will be reviewed by Henning and Fredrik Hellberg. Then, whenever the physics department gets a request, Fredrik will contact the people on the list. It is important that you do not make an agreement with a student/teacher on your own if you want teaching hours*, but go through Fredrik. If you get contacted personally, please redirect the student/teacher to Fredrik.


Please let me know by February the 17th if you want to be in the pool of potential supervisors. Also let me know which research group you are in and for how long a period you could supervise the same student(s) (5 days is maximum). I also have some ideas for basic exercises in particle phenomenology and in programming, which I am willing to share if you are interested - please let me know in that case.

Etikseminarium för doktorander

Vi bjuder nu in till terminens seminarium för forskarstuderande om 
forskningsetik. Under tidigare seminarier har vi till vår stora glädje 
haft mycket livliga och intressanta diskussioner om viktiga etiska 
frågor. Vi hoppas så blir fallet även denna gång.

Vi bjuder på lunch i samband med seminariet.

Enligt fakultetsnämndens beslut är deltagande i seminariet obligatoriskt 
för alla forskarstuderande.

Terminens seminarium ges måndag 9/5  kl. 9.15-14 i rum FD41 på AlbaNova.

Seminariet ges på engelska och föreläsare och diskussionsledare är Lars 
Bergström och Kerstin Jon-And, Fysikum.

Som litteratur används häftet  "On being a Scientist" (A guide to 
responsible conduct in research) TREDJE utgåvan, från National Academy 
of Sciences, som fås utan kostnad för deltagarna.

Invitation to seminar for graduate students on ethics in research

We now invite graduate students to attend this semester's seminar on 
ethics in research. We have been very happy to have had lively and and 
interesting discussion on ethical issues during the earlier seminars. We 
hope this will be the case this time as well. Lunch will be served.

According to a decision by the Faculty Board, it is compulsory for all 
graduate students.

This semester's seminar takes place Monday, May 9, 9.15-14 in room FD41 
in AlbaNova.

The seminar is conducted in English and led by Professors Lars Bergström 
and Kerstin Jon-And, Physics Department.

The seminar is based on the booklet "On being a Scientist" (A guide to 
responsible conduct in research) third edition, from National Academy of

Jag planerar för nästa tematräff för kandidatstudenterna och vill gärna ha ett fysik-/forskningstema denna gång. Vill du och/eller din forskargrupp ta chansen att göra lite reklam för er själva genom att berätta om ert forskningsområde och era projekt under avslappnade former? Hör av dig så snart du har möjlighet. Det brukar vara uppskattat och trevligt för både studenterna och dem som är med och arrangerar!


Datum och tid kan vi komma överens om tillsammans, med hänsyn taget till studenternas kursscheman, men gärna nästnästa vecka (v. 10), alt. i slutet av nästa vecka.

It is quite fun and I usually make my students write some function or do a hack for me that I'm too lazy or busy to do.


The dates for the next two students (year 8) to come here are:

En påminnelse om fakultetens forskarskola

som varje år ger intresserade gymnasieelever möjlighet till
ett blixtbesök(2veckor i Juni precis innan midsommar) i forskningsvärlden.

Joakim och Serena har skickat ut förfrågningar tidigare, om några 
forskargrupper är intresserade av
att handleda en grupp om 6 gymnasieelever i något forskningsnära projekt.

Jag tjatar bara en gång till eftersom det är snedd fördelning inom 
fakulteten
(Det är 8 handledare från biologi, 6 från kemi och endast 2 från Fysikum)
och arrangörerna har fått särskilda förfrågningar om mer matematiska och 
fysikaliska projekt.
Så kontakta gärna Agneta Noren <agneta at dbb.su.se> eller mig om ni är 
lite nyfikna
och vill veta mer om hur det går till och vilket ersättning som ges.

Det är en viktig målgrupp för rekrytering till våra program och 
genomgående mycket engagerade studenter.

A survey about teaching duties and pedagogical development is being conducted by the pedagogical ambassadors for CeUL and we hope that you are willing to help us in this! The aim is to screen the current situation at the respective departments and the results may help improving the pedagogical environment at SU.

Just nu genomförs en undersökning om hur medarbetare vid Stockholms universitet upplever sin arbetsmiljö, arbetssituation samt för att få en inblick i arbetet med pedagogisk utveckling vid de olika institutionerna.

Apparently Spring is here?!?
Anyway, the academic year 2015/16 is soon coming to its end and it is time to start planning for next years' teaching (and other assistantship duties).

FOR THE EXPERIENCED PHD STUDENTS:
YOU SHOULD RETURN THE ATTACHED FORM IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ASSISTANTSHIP NEXT ACADEMIC YEAR IRRESPECTIVE OF WHETHER YOU ARE DOING ANY TEACHING THIS YEAR OR NOT!

FOR THE NEW PHD STUDENTS:
As you probably all have been informed about, there is an opportunity to teach or to do other department duties while you are a PhD Student. The deal is that you fill in the attached form and return it to me, either electronically or in my 'pigeon hole' at the reception. If I have a task for you, you will be employed part time for your teaching or other tasks up to 20% of full time. Then your estimated working time for your PhD work is adjusted accordingly so that your 'PhD clock' runs slower according to how much you teach. In the end you may then gain up to one year longer to finish your PhD.

Since a substantial fraction of the courses here are taught in Swedish, the mastering of that peculiar language is a pre-requisite for many of the available tasks. For that reason, it is USUALLY so that while all Swedish speaking PhD students get teaching tasks if they ask for it, this is not always the case for non-Swedish speaking PhD Students, who sometimes find themselves ending up on my 'Waiting List'. This is not a reason for not applying though. So far no one was on the waiting list two consecutive years.

Two weeks from now, on Monday the 16th of May at 15:00 in FB42, the PhD council at Fysikum will hold the Spring Meeting. The PhD council is comprised of all students at Fysikum and has meetings twice per year. In the spring meeting, PhD student representatives for all committees and groups at Fysikum are elected as well as a PhD council board. The PhD council board meets once per month and has at least one member from each research group at Fysikum.

During the Spring Meeting, you will recieve important information about the work of the PhD council board in the last year, as well as general information of interest to you as a PhD student at Fysikum. We will also perform the formal elections of all PhD student representatives for the year 2016/17. I was just sorting through my emails and I found this one. I thought I would mention that for many of us who do not have a good command of Swedish these emails can easily get pushed to the ‘read latter when I have google translate’ pile. It might be helpful to have a very quick sentence at the top of the email in English summarising the content, this might just improve response rate.

This is a reminder of the Spring Meeting for the PhD student council on Monday, 16th of May at 15:00 in FB42 (see below for more information). 

Please find attached the new rules for self-plagiarism from Stockholm University. This document will be discussed during the meeting, where we will also summarize it in English. If your PhD in any way builds on e.g. your master project, it is very important that you are aware of this document and have understood what it implies. The consequences of breaking these rules will be personal, i.e. it is your responsibility alone as a PhD student to make sure you obide by these rules.

invitation to a seminar,  aimed mainly at non-swedish phd students and 
researchers.

Are you new to Sweden or just still wondering how this confusing country 
works? The university is full of researchers, teachers, post docs and 
doctoral candidates of non-Swedish origin trying to figure out how to 
navigate all the different rules and regulations that govern the Swedish 
labour market, social security, residence, health care, unemployment and 
pensions. If you are one of them – this seminar is for you!

*Time: *June 1*,* at 12.00-14.00,
*Place: *William-Olssonsalen, Geovetenskapens hus

*The seminar will address questions like:

*How does the Swedish labour market work?
What are the three government agencies that "rule your world"?
Who needs a residence permit?
How does the social security system work?
Can I use the health care system?
Do I have the right to unemployment benefit?
Are only Swedish citizens entitled to Swedish pensions?

The seminar is held by Åsa Rybo Landelius.

is binding. Sandwich and beverage will be available for those who signed up

*Who can attend the seminars?*
The seminars are open for everyone but SULF members have priority. If

receive 1 month membership for free.

vi håller på att ordna en sommarskola som främst riktar sig till kvinnliga masterstudenter (och tidiga doktorander, dvs de som är på sitt första doktorandår) och söker deltagare från hela landet. Om ni har tillgång till listor över kvinnliga masterstudenter och doktorander på era lärosäten, skulle ni kunna sprida denna länk till dem och uppmuntra dem att söka?

Please find attached the new rules for self-plagiarism from Stockholm University. This document will be discussed during the meeting, where we will also summarize it in English. If your PhD in any way builds on e.g. your master project, it is very important that you are aware of this document and have understood what it implies. The consequences of breaking these rules will be personal, i.e. it is your responsibility alone as a PhD student to make sure you obide by these rules.

Regarding the social event after the meeting, we will start around 18:00 in the Atomic Physics corridor. Please bring cash, as we will order e.g. pizza.

Two weeks from now, on Monday the 16th of May at 15:00 in FB42, the PhD council at Fysikum will hold the Spring Meeting. The PhD council is comprised of all students at Fysikum and has meetings twice per year. In the spring meeting, PhD student representatives for all committees and groups at Fysikum are elected as well as a PhD council board. The PhD council board meets once per month and has at least one member from each research group at Fysikum.

During the Spring Meeting, you will recieve important information about the work of the PhD council board in the last year, as well as general information of interest to you as a PhD student at Fysikum. We will also perform the formal elections of all PhD student representatives for the year 2016/17. Please find the agenda of the meeting as well as the positions and current status of nominations through the following links:

Hi everybody,

Yesterday at the PhD spring meeting we presented the handicraft club 
that we have founded with members from primarily atomic physics and 
chemical physics. However, we would very much like to welcome members 
from other departments as well.

The idea is that we bring our handicraft (such as knitting, crocheting, 
jewelery making, soldering, sewing etc.) and have a nice time. There is 
ample opportunity to practice Swedish as well if one feels like it.

We meet every Monday and the next meeting will be:

*Monday 23rd of May at 17:00 in the atomic physics coffee room, C4:3031.*

(There will not be any meeting today)

Hi all!
Are you a PhD student? Do you think physics is fun!? Do you want to teach kids the fun of physics? Do you want to get teaching hours while showing of experiments? Then Fysikshow is the group for you!

We are a merry outreach group at Fysikum in need of new members for next year! We visit schools all over Stockholm (or even further away) and show kids of all ages awesome experiments and talk about what it is like to study physics and sometimes even present our own research.

We at Fysikshow (check out our website<http://www.fysik.su.se/skolor_allmanhet/fysikshow/> if you haven't heard of us) are looking for people that are interested in making a difference in science outreach, are passionate about physics and want to have fun while getting teaching hours.

A working knowledge of Swedish and a driver's license are desirable but not a requirement. Abstract:
Publishing the results of one's research is an integral part of the scientific process, yet scholarly journals are often seen as black boxes by researchers. What happens to a paper after it is submitted? Who is deciding on its fate? What is the role of the journal editor and the editorial office? How does the peer-review process work, and are its core principles still relevant in today's changing publishing landscape? In this talk, I will endeavour to discuss these and other aspects of scientific publishing from a journal editor's perspective, and I'll share my experience going from the research lab to the "other side" of scientific publishing.

The Statistical research group (Statistiska forskningsgruppen, SFG) at

In 2014, the first class of students started the new bachelor program in Physics. These students will now start 3rd year. At the conference, we will discuss and inform about the courses in the new program. How did it go and what are the challenges remaining? Then it's time for us to start to discuss the courses for master students. The courses at advanced level have to be adjusted to the new bachelor program. This is work we would like to initiate at the conference. More detailed information about the content of the conference will come closer to the meeting.

The schedules of our courses should already now be adjusted such that you do not have any teaching at the date of the conference.

This Autumn marks the start of a project aimed at evolving the laboratory 
based part of the physics education at Fysikum. It is funded by the SU vice 
chancellor and led by Andreas Rydh and myself from Fysikum and Jakob 
Gyllenpalm from the Dept of Mathematics and Science Education (MND). It will 
run over three semesters and the expected main outcome is guidelines for 
improved use of laboratory based components in the education. Another aim is 
to strengthen the general teaching competence at Fysikum among the permanent 
staff as well as PhD students,  who often are most directly involved in the 
laboratory based part of the education as assistants.

The project starts with a seminar series running for the duration of the

Fysikshow recently recieved a request from two high school (gymnasie) 
students for scientific / technical advice for their 
gymansieprojektarbete (you might think of it as a high school level 
thesis project), which we would like to extend to all PhD students.

Participants will receive up to 1 full day of teaching hours for their 
efforts (for more than that you would have to discuss with Henning 
before spending the time).

If you are interested and have the expertise with regards to either

Etikseminarium för doktorander

Vi bjuder nu in till terminens seminarium för forskarstuderande om 
forskningsetik. Under tidigare seminarier har vi till vår stora glädje 
haft mycket livliga och intressanta diskussioner om viktiga etiska 
frågor. Vi hoppas så blir fallet även denna gång.

Invitation to seminar for graduate students on ethics in research

We now invite graduate students to attend this semester's seminar on 
ethics in research. We have been very happy to have had lively and 
interesting discussion on ethical issues during the earlier seminars. We 
hope this will be the case this time as well. Lunch will be served.


According to a decision by the Faculty Board, it is compulsory for all 
graduate students.

This semester's seminar takes place Tuesday, October 25, 9.15-14 in room 
FP41 in AlbaNova.

The seminar is conducted in English and led by Professors Lars Bergström

The seminar is based on the booklet "On being a Scientist" (A guide to

On Thursday, September 15th at 13:00 in FA31, the PhD student council will organize a meeting for teaching assistants (which will be followed by the meeting for new assistants). The purpose is to go over the past academic year in terms of your teaching as assistants, to share experience and to identify if something needs to be improved. Please see the attached agenda.

Please also make sure to read the Guidelines for teaching assistants on courses at the Department of Physics. This document was initiated by and developed with the PhD student council board, and describes what is - and what is not - expected of you as a teaching assistant. Hi!

Fysikum is participating in "Forskarfredag" which is organized by 
Vetenskapens Hus
as part of the international event "Researchers' night" the 30th of 
September.

We are thinking about organizing an event open to the public in the 
evening at Albanova
and one suggestion is that we could have something like a poster 
session/afterwork combo,
where PhD students in Albanova bring their latest conference posters and 
gather with some food and drink.

*Of course such an event is only possible if enough PhD students are 
interested!*
All preparations are taken care of, you only need to show up with you 
poster.

My question to you PhD students is to please let me know if you would be 
interested in an after-work poster session 30 sept 17-19 and*
**if you would consider to contribute and discuss your work* with fellow 
students and explain to possible visitors from the general public.
Deadline for preliminary committment: 9 sept.

Concerning the idea below. Only 5 Ph.D. students have expressed interest 
in this event,
so unless there is a sudden rush today, we cannot realize it.

Just a last attempt to advocate it. It is an excellent opportunity to 
present what you are doing
to a general public and meet colleagues in-house and interested 
students, as well a potentially nice social event.

On Thursday, September 15th at 13:00 in FA31, the PhD student council will organize a meeting for teaching assistants (which will be followed by the meeting for new assistants). The purpose is to go over the past academic year in terms of your teaching as assistants, to share experience and to identify if something needs to be improved. Please see the attached agenda.

Please also make sure to read the Guidelines for teaching assistants on courses at the Department of Physics. This document was initiated by and developed with the PhD student council board, and describes what is - and what is not - expected of you as a teaching assistant. Hej!

Every semester we have students from compulsory school that wants to 
come to Fysikum as a trainee for a week (which in priciple means that 
they see what we are doing and help out as much as they can or we give 
them some assignements) . Olga Bylund sent out an email about this last 
year and some of you have already helped out which we appreciate a lot. 
Typically we have students here two weeks per semester and the weeks are 
divided among a few supervisors (if no one wants to take them fo a whole 
week).

Both me and the PR-group at Fysikum think it is valuable if we can 
continue this activity and it would be great if more PhD students can 
help out. This semester we have four students in two different weeks. 
The first one is next week and we still need supervisor for one day in 
the end of that week,

v43   24-29 October.

During the second week we still need supervisors.

v46  14-18 November

Please reply to me as soon as possible if you are interested and also 
pass this information to any Post doc in your group that might be 
interested because we do not have a good way to contact them.

PhD students get hours as teacher assistants for the efforts.

Dear all!
Naturvetenskapliga Föreningen would like to invite the researchers and students of your department to this year's Science Slam which will take place on November 9.

Stockholm University Science Slam is a competition in entertaining science presentation where researchers and students from Stockholm University will present their own research in 5 minutes in front of a non-expert audience. The event takes place in a very informal pub environment starting at 17.00 were speakers can eat, drink and mingle before and after the talks, the evening ends with the audience voting on their favorite talk and ultimately a winner will be crowned.

Last year this was a very well visited and appreciated event and hopefully there is the same amount of interest this year! We would be very happy if you could spread this information at your department, everyone conducting research (from Master's level and upwards) are welcome to participate.

Application to the competition is done to this email (info at nf.su.se<mailto:info at nf.su.se>) no later than October 31, there is a limited number of open spots and we aim to have speakers from all fields of Science. Please send your name, department, position and title of your talk.

Winter has arrived! The PhD council would like to invite you to celebrate the winter holidays. We are planning a social event from 5.30 pm on THUR 8 DEC to be held outside the Albanova restaurant.

THERE WILL BE A PUB QUIZ WITH FABULOUS PRIZES!
THERE WILL BE MUSIC!
THERE WILL BE FUN COLLEAGUES AND NICE BEVERAGES!

There will be cheap drinks (20 sek) and pizza (50 sek) so bring cash. It is helpful if we know how many people will come, so please reply to this email if you plan on attending. We will order pizza at 18.30 so if you would like pizza please bring 50 sek  (the PhD council will subsidise the rest of the pizza cost).

To All Phd-students,

As some of you may know, I am the PhD safety delegate (doktorandskyddsombud) and representative of the PhD students in the working environment committee.
At previous PhD-council meetings we have often discussed what we as PhD students should do in case of emergency or accident, either in our own lab, or while we are teaching. In light of these discussions I would like to share with you the document attached; "In case of emergency" by the SU technical support office, section for safety and security.

Although this document is not decisive on the point of responsibility that you have as a teacher, it describes in which situations you should contact which phone numbers (should you call 112 or not? for example). It also states that ANY incident should be reported in SAMIR, of which I think not many PhD-students are aware.

SAMIR is a system for reporting crime, incidents, work-related injuries or illnesses, commuting accidents, security notifications, and environmental non-conformance. You can also leave suggestions for improvement.

Together with Henning, I have modified the document for time limits for handing in and correction of lab reports.

Are you new to Sweden or just still wondering how this confusing country works? The university is full of researchers, teachers, post docs and doctoral candidates of non-Swedish origin trying to figure out how to navigate all the different rules and regulations that govern the Swedish labour market, social security, residence, health care, unemployment and pensions. If you are one of them – this seminar is for you!

Time: November 30 at 12.00-14.00 
Place: De Geersalen, Geovetenskapens hus
The seminar will address questions like:

How does the Swedish labour market work?
What are the three government agencies that "rule your world"?
Who needs a residence permit?
How does the social security system work?
Can I use the health care system?
Do I have the right to unemployment benefit?
Are only Swedish citizens entitled to Swedish pensions?

The seminar is held by Åsa Rybo Landelius.

Hej!

Winter has arrived! The PhD council would like to invite you to celebrate the winter holidays. We are planning a social event from 5.30 pm on THUR 8 DEC to be held outside the Albanova restaurant.

THERE WILL BE A PUB QUIZ WITH FABULOUS PRIZES!
THERE WILL BE MUSIC!
THERE WILL BE FUN COLLEAGUES AND NICE BEVERAGES!

There will be cheap drinks (20 sek) and pizza (50 sek) so bring cash. It is helpful if we know how many people will come, so please reply to this email if you plan on attending. We will order pizza at 18.30 so if you would like pizza please bring 50 sek  (the PhD council will subsidise the rest of the pizza cost).

We don’t want to leave out the other juniors — so if you have a postdoc in your group who would like to join they are most welcome and please extend the invitation.

Subject: [Drand] New temporary rule for salary increase criteria

Dear PhD student at Fysikum,

On behalf of the PhD student council board, I am very happy to let you know that Per-Erik Tegnér (director of research studies) and Sten Hellman (subject responsible) have proposed a new, temporary rule for salary increase corresponding to the 50% level that is not dependent on the licentiate examination. According to this rule, (to be valid from 2017-01-01 to 2017-06-30), 50% of the requirements for a PhD have been fulfilled when


1)      24 full research study months have been completed (corrected for assistantship, potential sick leave and leave of absence) and when

2)      The supervisor verifies that 50% of the requirements have been fulfilled.

The salary increase will be given the month after 1) and 2) have been fulfilled. A pre-requisite for the salary increase is that the individual study plan has been revised according to the regulations.

This is the result of fruitful discussions and collaboration between the PhD council board and Per-Erik and Sten, and will result in a large number of PhD students already fulfilling 1) and 2) being given an increase of salary in January 2017.

Hej kontaktpersoner forskarutbildning,

De senaste åren har fakulteterna gemensamt ordnat en dag om livet efter 
dr-examen, en blandning av information och inspiration. Så också 2017, 
dagen äger rum 15/2, se  bifogat schema. Jag ber er vidarebefordra denna 
inbjudan till nydisputerade och doktorander i slutfasen av utbildningen 
på era respektive institutioner.  (Presentationerna är på svenska, det 
går bra att ställa frågor på engelska. Till skillnad från tidigare år 
kan vi inte bjuda på lunch, representationsreglerna lägger hinder i vägen.)
