In order to decide the winning argument we let ten exchange students decide who showed up at our fika before Christmas. We used mentimeter and they were alowed to pick all arguments they liked and how many as they wanted.*Congratrulations to the winner Medical radiation physics with the argument  "To answers the questions you did not even know you had"*. Eight out of ten students like that one. Second and third price below. If you want to see all submitted contributions go to www.menti.com and enter the code 16 14 59. While you look at the contributions please vote for the ones you like (as many as you like) and we can see if there is a difference between employees and students. They are on two different sheets, so you need to submit the first one to see the rest. If you come up with an idea while you read them you can submit one at the end.  I have it open from today and until Monday evening. Have  a nice weekend, Fredrik First place (8/10): To answers the questions you did not even know you had (Mecical radation physics) Second place (7/10): To learn the hidden secrets of nature (Instrumentation physics) Third place (5/10): To challange your limits and for our teachers to help you overcome them (Atomic physics) To challange yourself and grow as a person (Administration) To have lunch next to Nobel prize winner (Chemical Physics) To understand the universe from the smallest to the largest scales (COPS) To enjoy Swedish fika and cinnamon buns (COPS) Den 2018-11-28 kl. 14:48, skrev Fredrik Hellberg: > > Hej, > > Last minute reminder about the competition to find argumets for > students to choose our physics education (especially master programs). > Last day is on *Friday 30 november*.  Use your research, course you > teach or general arguments on the form (To/för att + argument). > > For example > > To learn about quantum computing > > To invest in your career > > The plan is to let our exchange students choose the winner at farewell > fika in December. The course is planned to be given once a year. Next opportunity is in  April this Spring, with a course start on Monday, April 1, according to the attached schedule. The course comprises a set of lectures given by Professor Christina Moberg, KTH, followed by group discussions and presentations on specific topics, lead by conveners from the four departments. English will be used throughout. More details will be distributed prior to the course start. To take part,  apply to Gorica Nikolic, student expedition, Physics Department, 08-55378650, Gorica.Nikolic at fysik.su.se . Deadline for application is Monday, March 18. I have no personal experience of this course, but according to the description it's about how to communicate one's research effectively -- to students, to the public, to journalists, to other researchers, at conferences, or when writing grant proposals. Presumably, the course is in Swedish. Normally you would have to pay for this, but since they need to fill the last seats they now offer it for free. It starts on March 20 and details are to be found here: http://www.sh.se/p3/ext/content.nsf/aget?openagent&key=utvecklingsenheten_for_hogskolepedagogik_1329813513528#!/p3/ext/content.nsf/aget?openagent&key=att_forklara_forskning_1540365927162 If you are interested, please get back to me by e-mail as soon as possible and I'll forward your request. Whether this relationship is mostly speaking in front of a large group of students or working more closely with smaller groups or even with individual students, you may from time to time have found yourself in a situation where you have reflected about your role as a teacher in relation to the student(s) – maybe even making you feel uncomfortable or uncertain about how to act. For example, you may have experience of one student taking up a lot of time in class at the expense of the other students, a student may have asked you for preferential treatment, or maybe you have just experienced an instance where the pedagogical atmosphere has been negatively influenced without you knowing exactly why. Regardless of what kind of social situation you have encountered in your role as a teacher, it could be very developing to discuss it with your colleagues, hear about their experience as well, and hopefully be able to share good advice. Enligt arrangören är man som young tills man avslutat sin första post doc, men ”anyone who feels that they are young scientists – even by heart only 😉 – we wouldn’t turn away from the trainings”. We represent PhD students on the Graduate Education Board of the faculty. The faculty is evaluating the doctoral education in the different sections and we are in charge of finding PhD students from other universities to join external evaluation committees. Right now we are looking for six PhD students for the evaluation committees in the following sections: - Physics and Astronomy (one student, begins in January 2020), - Chemistry (two students, begins in March 2020), - Biology (three students, begins in May 2020). [For later evaluations in Earth Sciences or Computer Science, a separate call will be sent during spring term 2020.] If you would like to take part in these evaluation committees, please use the form below to send us your contact details, a short motivation letter and a short CV until 28th OCTOBER. https://forms.gle/v7g4pyxkhZqXeFkJ8 Make sure to mention relevant experiences (see list below) and that the evaluation time line works for you (see below). TekNat doctoral board (TNDR) will elect representatives for each of the three sections, candidates will be notified shortly after. PhD student members of the evaluation committees will be compensated with 7000 SEK and all costs for the on-site visit (travel, accommodation, meals) will be covered by Uppsala University. The expected workload is about 1 week full time. Members of the evaluation committees are expected to: have expertise within the field to be evaluated, have dealt with questions regarding quality in education (preferably PhD education/graduate level), have experience about the organisation of Swedish institutions for higher education (e.g. from participation in boards or committees on different levels at a university or college within Sweden or related agencies). It is an advantage to be able to read Swedish texts, although the discussions and most of the texts are expected to be in English. It is also an advantage to have worked with questions regarding equal opportunities. We are aiming for diverse evaluation committees and welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds. Information about the evaluation time line: The evaluation process is planned to take 12 months for each section. The external evaluation committee is expected to have the main workload throughout months 4 to 10 of the evaluation process (reading self-evaluation report of the section, on-site visit with interviews, writing external evaluation report). More detailed information can be found in the attached document (instructions for external committees, only in Swedish) and in the following documents (English and Swedish): https://regler.uu.se/document/?contentId=706678 and https://regler.uu.se/document/?contentId=763088 Please contact georgii.shamuilov at physics.uu.se and gwenna.breton at ebc.uu.se if you have any questions. The course Colloquia in Physics is intended to give a broad acquaintance with current research in Physics and Theoretical Physics beyond your specialised PhD topic. It is mandatory in the above PhD topics, and hopefully also personally rewarding. This autumn, the first of the AlbaNova colloquia included in the course will be by Sara Strandberg on October 17, and Jörgen Sjölin will guide this module of the course, and send out invitations to meetings for it. To explain the workings of the course, and practically important routines, all new students are invited to an Intro meeting THIS week: please fill in this doodle TODAY to determine the date and time. Welcome! Bo PS. PhD students who have already started the course, but have missed an intro meeting, are also welcome to the doodle and the meeting! PPS. CDR works to improve the conditions for PhD students at Stockholm University, in order to maintain a good quality education at the doctoral level and to improve the career opportunities after graduating both within and outside the university world. As a part of its work CDR nominates candidates to represent PhD students in a a number of board and councils at central university level as well as at the area of Human sciences. In order to secure as broad and as good a representation as possible, CDR will hold an election meeting, where we will elect the candidates for the different positions. The meeting will be held at 26th of November in Hörsal 3 at Frescati campus. There will be fruit, coffee and tea, and fika. Attached is the agenda for the nomination meeting, the call for nomination which contains information on all of the positions we will be nominating for as well as the nomination and election procedure. It is important to notice that the deadline for nominating candidates are one week before the meeting, that is nominations are to be send to cdr at sus.su.se at the 19th of November. A nomination should contain a short motivational letter written by the candidate. We hope very much that you will help us secure as good and broad representation of PhD students as possible, and share this information with your fellow PhD students and the faculty student and PhD student councils! I attach here a list of the present status for all of you to consider. Please let me know if you see some mistakes. The list contains all PhD students who are active. But observe, even for students without activity there has to be a yearly update (a monitoring), but it can be simplified by using the attached form. The form attached can also be used for students close to their defense (typically a defense within half-a-year). The ISP form is found here: https://www.fysik.su.se/internt/råd-och-stöd/stöd-till-lärare/utbildning-på-forskarnivå (next year the ISP will be web-based). _Rules:_ For PhD students already in the system, the ISP has to be revised/updated once every 12 months, i.e. there has to be an ISP updated in 2019! If this is not done, the employment may be stopped. Without a valid ISP there will be no salary raise connected to the 50% or 80% achievements of the studies. For new PhD students, a first ISP is required to be handed in within 2 months of the start date. _Attached list:_ The list contains four sections. For students in section A and B immediate action is needed.  For students (newly started) in section C immediate action is needed in most cases. _Action:_ Supervisors:  It is the responsibility of the supervisor to see to that there is a valid ISP! PhD students: Please talk to your supervisor or come to me if the process has not started.
